1 Or il arriva, après cela, que Nahash, le roi des enfants d’Ammon, mourut ; et son fils régna à sa place.

 1 Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

2 Et David dit : J’userai de bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nahash, car son père a usé de bonté envers moi. Et David envoya des messagers pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Et les serviteurs de David vinrent au pays des enfants d’Ammon vers Hanun, pour le consoler.

 2 And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

3 Mais les princes des enfants d’Ammon dirent à Hanun : Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t’a envoyé des consolateurs? Ses serviteurs ne sont-ils pas venus auprès de toi pour reconnaître, et détruire, et épier le pays?

 3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

4 C’est pourquoi Hanun prit les serviteurs de David, les fit raser, et fit couper leurs vêtements par le milieu, jusqu’aux fesses, et les renvoya.

 4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Puis certains hommes vinrent dire à David comment les hommes avaient été traités. Et il envoya à leur rencontre, car les hommes étaient fort honteux. Et le roi dit : Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et alors vous reviendrez.

 5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

6 ¶ Et quand les enfants d’Ammon virent qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux envers David, Hanun et les enfants d’Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d’argent, pour soudoyer des chariots et des cavaliers de la Mésopotamie, et de la Syriamaacah et de Zobah ;

 6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

7 Ainsi ils soudoyèrent trente-deux mille chariots, et le roi de Maachah avec son peuple, lesquels vinrent et campèrent devant Medeba. Et les enfants d’Ammon se rassemblèrent de leurs villes, et vinrent pour combattre.

 7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

8 Et quand David l’apprit, il envoya Joab et toute l’armée, les hommes puissants.

 8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

9 Et les enfants d’Ammon sortirent et se mirent en ordre de bataille à l’entrée de la ville ; et les rois qui étaient venus, étaient à part dans la campagne.

 9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

10 Or quand Joab vit que la bataille était dressée contre lui devant et derrière, il choisit des troupes de toute l’élite d’Israël, et les déploya contre les Syriens ;

 10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

11 Et le reste du peuple, il le donna en la main d’Abishai, son frère ; et ils se déployèrent contre les enfants d’Ammon.

 11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

12 Et il dit : Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras alors m’aider ; et si les enfants d’Ammon sont plus forts que toi, alors je t’aiderai.

 12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

13 Sois plein de courage, et montrons-nous vaillants pour notre peuple, et pour les villes de notre Dieu ; et que le SEIGNEUR fasse ce qui lui semble bon.

 13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

14 Alors Joab, et le peuple qui était avec lui, s’approchèrent pour livrer bataille aux Syriens, et ils s’enfuirent devant lui.

 14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

15 Et quand les enfants d’Ammon, virent que les Syriens s’étaient enfuis, ils s’enfuirent aussi devant Abishai, son frère, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab alla à Jérusalem.

 15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

16 ¶ Et quand les Syriens virent qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils envoyèrent des messagers, et firent sortir les Syriens qui étaient de l’autre côte du fleuve ; et Shophach, le capitaine de l’armée de Hadarezer, était à leur tête.

 16 ¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

17 Et cela fut rapporté à David, et il rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, vint vers eux, et se déploya en ordre de bataille contre eux. Aussi quand David se rangea en bataille contre les Syriens, ils se battirent avec lui.

 17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

18 Mais les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël ; et David tua parmi les Syriens sept mille hommes qui combattaient dans des chariots, et quarante mille fantassins, et tua Shophach, le capitaine de l’armée.

 18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

19 Et quand les serviteurs de Hadarezer virent qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils firent la paix avec David, et devinrent ses serviteurs ; et les Syriens ne voulurent plus aider les enfants d’Ammon.

 19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
