1 ¶ Et Satan se dressa contre Israël, et incita David à faire le dénombrement d’Israël.

 1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

2 Et David dit à Joab et aux dirigeants du peuple : Allez, faites le dénombrement d’Israël, depuis Beersheba jusqu’à Dan, et rapportez-le-moi, afin que je le connaisse.

 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

3 Et Joab répondit : Que le SEIGNEUR fasse son peuple cent fois plus nombreux qu’il est ; mais mon seigneur le roi, ne sont-ils pas tous serviteurs de mon seigneur? Pourquoi donc mon seigneur demande-t-il cette chose? Pourquoi cela serait-il imputé à Israël?

 3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

4 Cependant la parole du roi prévalut sur Joab. C’est pourquoi Joab partit, et parcourut tout Israël, et revint à Jérusalem.

 4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

5 ¶ Et Joab donna à David le total du nombre du peuple. Et il se trouva de tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l’épée ; et de Judah (Juda) quatre cent soixante et dix mille hommes tirant l’épée ;

 5 ¶ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

6 Mais Levi (Lévi) et Benjamin ne furent pas comptés parmi eux ; car la parole du roi était une abomination pour Joab.

 6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

7 Et cette chose déplut à Dieu, c’est pourquoi il frappa Israël.

 7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

8 Et David dit à Dieu : J’ai grandement péché d’avoir fait cette chose ; mais maintenant, fais passer, je te supplie, l’iniquité de ton serviteur ; car j’ai agi très follement.

 8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9 ¶ Et le SEIGNEUR parla à Gad, le voyant de David, disant :

 9 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,

10 Va et parle à David, disant : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : J’ai trois choses à te proposer ; choisis l’une d’elles, afin que je te la fasse.

 10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

11 Et Gad vint vers David, et lui dit : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Choisis,

 11 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

12 Ou trois années de famine, ou d’être détruit pendant trois mois devant tes adversaires, en sorte que l’épée de tes ennemis t’atteigne, ou bien pendant trois jours l’épée du SEIGNEUR, c’est-à-dire la pestilence dans le pays, et l’ange du SEIGNEUR détruisant dans tous les confins d’Israël. Maintenant donc avise-toi de quelle parole je dois rapporter à celui qui m’a envoyé.

 12 Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

13 Et David dit à Gad : Je suis dans une grande détresse ; laisse-moi tomber maintenant en la main du SEIGNEUR ; car très grandes sont ses miséricordes ; mais ne me laisse pas tomber en la main des hommes.

 13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

14 ¶ Alors le SEIGNEUR envoya la pestilence sur Israël, et il tomba soixante et dix mille hommes d’Israël.

 14 ¶ So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

15 Et Dieu envoya un ange à Jérusalem pour la détruire ; et comme il était en train de la détruire, le SEIGNEUR regarda, et se repentit de ce mal, et dit à l’ange qui détruisait : Assez, Retire maintenant ta main. Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR se tenait près dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jebusite.

 15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

16 Et David leva ses yeux et vit l’ange du SEIGNEUR qui était entre la terre et le ciel, ayant en sa main une épée nue étendue sur Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens d’Israël, qui étaient couverts de sacs, tombèrent sur leurs visages.

 16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

17 Et David dit à Dieu : N’est-ce pas moi qui ai commandé de dénombrer le peuple? C’est moi qui ai péché et qui ai mal agi ; mais quant à ces moutons, qu’ont-ils fait? Que ta main, je te prie, ô SEIGNEUR, mon Dieu, soit sur moi, et sur la maison de mon père, mais qu’elle ne soit pas sur ton peuple, qu’il ne soit pas frappé de la pestilence.

 17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

18 ¶ Puis l’ange du SEIGNEUR commanda à Gad de dire à David, que David monte pour dresser un autel au SEIGNEUR, dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jebusite.

 18 ¶ Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

19 Et David monta, selon la parole de Gad, qu’il avait dite au nom du SEIGNEUR.

 19 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

20 Et Ornan se retourna et vit l’ange, et ses quatre fils avec lui se tenaient cachés. Or Ornan foulait le blé.

 20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

21 Et comme David venait vers Ornan ; Ornan regarda, et vit David, et sortit dans l’aire, et s’inclina devant David, son visage contre terre.

 21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

22 Alors David dit à Ornan : Accorde-moi la place de cette aire, afin que je puisse y bâtir un autel au SEIGNEUR ; tu me l’accorderas pour le plein prix, afin que la plaie puisse être retirée du peuple.

 22 Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23 Et Ornan dit à David : Prends-la, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qui est bon à ses yeux. Voici, je te donne aussi les bœufs pour les offrandes consumées, et les instruments à fouler pour le bois, et le blé pour l’offrande de farine ; je donne tout cela.

 23 And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

24 Et le roi David dit à Ornan : Non, mais certainement je l’achèterai pour son plein prix ; car je ne prendrai pas pour le SEIGNEUR ce qui est à toi, et je n’offrirai pas non plus d’offrandes consumées qui ne coûtent rien.

 24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

25 Ainsi David donna à Ornan pour la place, le poids de six cents shekels d’or.

 25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

26 Et David bâtit là un autel au SEIGNEUR, offrit des offrandes consumées et des offrandes de paix, et appela le SEIGNEUR, et il lui répondit du ciel par le feu qui descendit sur l’autel de l’offrande consumée.

 26 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

27 Alors le SEIGNEUR parla à l’ange, qui remit son épée dans le fourreau.

 27 And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

28 ¶ En ce temps-là lorsque David vit que le SEIGNEUR lui avait répondu dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jebusite, il y sacrifia.

 28 ¶ At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

29 Car le tabernacle du SEIGNEUR, que Moïse avait fait dans le désert, et l’autel des offrandes consumées, étaient, en ce temps-là, sur le haut lieu à Gibeon (Gabaon).

 29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

30 Mais David ne pouvait pas aller devant l’autel pour s’enquérir de Dieu, car il avait peur de l’épée de l’ange du SEIGNEUR.

 30 But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
