1 Et Rehoboam alla à Shechem, car tout Israël était venu à Shechem pour le faire roi.

 1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.

2 Et il arriva, quand Jeroboam, le fils de Nebat, qui était en Égypte, où il s’était enfui de la présence du roi Salomon, l’entendit, il revint d’Égypte.

 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

3 Et on envoya l’appeler. Ainsi Jeroboam et tout Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Rehoboam, disant :

 3 And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,

4 Ton père a rendu notre joug rude ; maintenant donc allège cette rude servitude de ton père, et son joug pesant qu’il a mis sur nous, et nous te servirons.

 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

5 Et il leur dit : revenez vers moi dans trois jours. Et le peuple s’en alla.

 5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

6 ¶ Et le roi Rehoboam prit conseil auprès des hommes âgés qui s’étaient tenus devant Salomon, son père, tandis qu’il vivait, disant : Quel conseil me donnez-vous pour répondre à ce peuple ?

 6 ¶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

7 Et ils lui parlèrent, disant : Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, si tu es bienveillant envers eux, et que tu leur es agréable, et leur dises de bonnes paroles, ils seront tes serviteurs pour toujours.

 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.

8 Mais il délaissa le conseil que les hommes âgés lui avaient donné, et il prit conseil avec les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, et qui se tenaient devant lui.

 8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

9 Et il leur dit : Quel avis me donnez-vous afin de répondre à ce peuple, qui m’a parlé, disant : Allège quelque peu le joug que ton père a mis sur nous ?

 9 And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

10 Et les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, lui parlèrent, disant : Tu répondras ainsi à ce peuple qui t’a parlé, disant : Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi, allège-le quelque peu pour nous ; tu leur diras ainsi : Mon petit doigt sera plus gros que les reins de mon père.

 10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 Car maintenant tandis que mon père a mis un joug pesant sur vous, j’ajouterai à votre joug : mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, mais moi, je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

 11 For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 Ainsi Jeroboam et tout le peuple vinrent vers Rehoboam le troisième jour, comme le roi avait ordonné, disant : revenez vers moi le troisième jour.

 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

13 Et le roi leur répondit rudement, et le roi Rehoboam délaissa le conseil des hommes âgés ;

 13 And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

14 Il leur répondit suivant l’avis des jeunes gens, disant : Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant ; mais moi, j’y ajouterai encore ; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets ; mais moi, je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

 14 And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Ainsi le roi n’écouta pas le peuple ; car cela venait de Dieu, afin que le SEIGNEUR puisse exécuter sa parole, laquelle il avait prononcée par la main d’Ahijah, le Shilonite, à Jeroboam, le fils de Nebat.

 15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 ¶ Et quand tout Israël vit que le roi ne voulut pas les écouter, le peuple répondit au roi, disant : Quelle part avons-nous avec David ? Et nous n’avons aucun héritage dans le fils de Jesse ; chaque homme à ses tentes, ô Israël, et maintenant, David, occupe-toi de ta maison. Ainsi tout Israël s’en alla dans ses tentes.

 16 ¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.

17 Mais quant aux enfants d’Israël qui demeuraient dans les villes de Judah (Juda), Rehoboam régna sur eux.

 17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Puis le roi Rehoboam envoya Hadoram, qui était établi sur les tributs ; et les enfants d’Israël le lapidèrent avec des pierres, si bien qu’il mourut. Mais le roi Rehoboam se hâta de monter sur son chariot pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.

 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 Et Israël se rebella contre la maison de David, jusqu’à ce jour.

 19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
