1 Et Abijah s’endormit avec ses pères, et on l’enterra dans la cité de David ; et Asa son fils régna à sa place. Durant ses jours, le pays fut en repos pendant dix ans.

 1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

2 Et Asa fit ce qui était bon et droit aux yeux du SEIGNEUR, son Dieu.

 2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:

3 Car il ôta les autels des dieux étrangers et les hauts lieux ; il brisa les statues et abattit les bosquets.

 3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:

4 Et il commanda à Judah (Juda) de rechercher le SEIGNEUR Dieu de leurs pères, et de pratiquer la loi et les commandements.

 4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

5 Il ôta aussi de toutes les villes de Judah (Juda) les hauts lieux et les statues ; et le royaume fut en repos sous sa conduite.

 5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

6 ¶ Et il bâtit des villes fortifiées en Judah (Juda) ; car le pays était en repos ; et il n’eut pas de guerre pendant ces années-là, parce que le SEIGNEUR lui donna du repos.

 6 ¶ And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.

7 C’est pourquoi il dit à Judah (Juda) : Bâtissons ces villes, et entourons-les de murailles, de tours, de portes et de barres ; pendant que le pays est encore sous notre conduite, parce que nous avons recherché le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu ; nous l’avons recherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. Ainsi ils bâtirent et prospérèrent.

 7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

8 Et Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Judah (Juda), qui portaient rondaches et lances, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille de Benjamin, qui portaient boucliers et tiraient l’arc, tous étaient de vaillants hommes de valeur.

 8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.

9 ¶ Et Zerah, l’Éthiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d’un million d’hommes, et de trois cents chariots ; et il vint jusqu’à Mareshah.

 9 ¶ And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.

10 Et Asa alla au-devant de lui, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Zephathah, près de Mareshah.

 10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

11 Et Asa cria au SEIGNEUR son Dieu et dit : SEIGNEUR, ce n’est rien pour toi d’aider, que l’on soit nombreux ou ceux qui sont sans force ; aide-nous, ô SEIGNEUR, notre Dieu ; car nous nous appuyons sur toi, et nous allons en ton nom contre cette multitude. Ô SEIGNEUR tu es notre Dieu : qu’aucun homme ne prévale contre toi.

 11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

12 Et le SEIGNEUR frappa les Éthiopiens devant Asa et devant Judah (Juda) ; et les Éthiopiens s’enfuirent.

 12 So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

13 Et Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu’à Gerar, et les Éthiopiens furent désemparés, si bien qu’ils ne purent se remettre ; car ils furent détruits devant le SEIGNEUR et devant son armée, et ils emportèrent un fort grand butin.

 13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.

14 Et ils frappèrent toutes les villes autour de Gerar, car la crainte du SEIGNEUR était venue sur elles ; et ils pillèrent toutes les villes, car il y avait un extrêmement grand butin.

 14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.

15 Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes des troupeaux, et emmenèrent moutons et chameaux en abondance ; puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

 15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
