1 Josiah était âgé de huit ans lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem.

 1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.

2 Il fit ce qui était droit aux yeux du SEIGNEUR ; et marcha dans les chemins de David, son père ; il ne s’en détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.

 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

3 ¶ Car durant la huitième année de son règne, tandis qu’il était encore jeune, il commença à rechercher le Dieu de David, son père ; et durant la douzième année, il commença à purger Judah (Juda) et Jérusalem des hauts lieux, et des bocages, et des images taillées, et des images fondues.

 3 ¶ For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

4 Et ils démolirent en sa présence les autels des Baalim, et les statues qui étaient en haut au-dessus, il coupa les bosquets, et les images taillées et les images fondues ; il les mit en morceaux, et les réduisit en poussière, il la répandit sur les tombes de ceux qui leur avaient sacrifié.

 4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

5 Et il brûla les os des prêtres sur leurs autels, et purifia Judah (Juda) et Jérusalem.

 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

6 Et il fit la même chose dans les villes de Manasseh, et d’Ephraim et de Simeon, et même jusqu’à Naphthali, avec leurs marteaux tout autour,

 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.

7 Et après qu’il ait démoli les autels, et les bosquets et concassé les images taillées en poussière, et abattu toutes les idoles par tout le pays d’Israël, il retourna à Jérusalem.

 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

8 ¶ Or durant la dix-huitième année de son règne, après qu’il ait purgé le pays et la maison, il envoya Shaphan, le fils d’Azaliah, et Maaseiah, le gouverneur de la ville, et Joah, le fils de Joahaz, l’archiviste, pour réparer la maison du SEIGNEUR, son Dieu.

 8 ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.

9 Et quand ils vinrent vers Hilkiah, le grand prêtre ; on livra l’argent qui avait été amené dans la maison de Dieu lequel les Lévites, qui gardaient les portes, avaient recueilli de la main de Manasseh, et d’Ephraim, et de tout le reste d’Israël, et de tout Judah (Juda), et de Benjamin, et ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.

10 Et ils le mirent en la main des ouvriers qui avaient la charge de la maison du SEIGNEUR, et ils le donnèrent aux ouvriers qui travaillaient dans la maison du SEIGNEUR, pour réparer et restaurer la maison.

 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house:

11 C’est-à-dire ils le remirent aux artisans et aux maçons, pour acheter des pierres de taille et du bois pour les assemblages et pour les planchers des maisons que les rois de Judah (Juda) avaient détruits.

 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 Et ces hommes travaillaient fidèlement, et leurs surveillants étaient Jahath et Obadiah (Abdias), les Lévites d’entre les fils de Merari, et Zechariah (Zacharie) et Meshullam, d’entre les fils des Kohathites, pour le faire avancer ; et d’autres des Lévites tous ceux qui pouvaient jouer des instruments de musique habilement.

 12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.

13 Ils étaient aussi sur les porteurs de fardeaux, et étaient surveillants de tous ceux qui faisaient l’ouvrage, dans toute sorte de service ; et il y avait des scribes, et des officiers et des portiers, d’entre les Lévites.

 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

14 ¶ Et quand on retirait l’argent qui avait été apporté dans la maison du SEIGNEUR, Hilkiah (Hilkija), le prêtre, trouva le livre de la loi du SEIGNEUR, donné par Moïse.

 14 ¶ And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.

15 Et Hilkiah (Hilkija) répondit et dit à Shaphan, le scribe : J’ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison du SEIGNEUR. Et Hilkiah donna le livre à Shaphan.

 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

16 Et Shaphan apporta le livre au roi, et rendit compte au roi, disant : Tout ce qui a été commis à tes serviteurs, ils le font.

 16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.

17 Et ils ont recueilli l’argent qui a été trouvé dans la maison du SEIGNEUR, et l’ont livré en la main des surveillants, et en la main des ouvriers.

 17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.

18 Puis Shaphan, le scribe, raconta au roi, disant : Hilkiah (Hilkija), le prêtre, m’a donné un livre. Et Shaphan le lut devant le roi.

 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

19 Et il arriva, lorsque le roi eut entendu les paroles de la loi, qu'il déchira ses vêtements ;

 19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

20 Et le roi commanda à Hilkiah (Hilkija), et à Achikam, le fils de Shaphan, et à Abdon, le fils de Micah, et à Shaphan, le scribe, et à Asaiah, un serviteur du roi, disant :

 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying,

21 Allez, consultez le SEIGNEUR pour moi et pour ceux qui sont de reste en Israël et en Judah (Juda), concernant les paroles du livre qui a été trouvé ; car grande est la colère du SEIGNEUR qui s’est répandue sur nous, parce que nos pères n’ont pas gardé la parole du SEIGNEUR, pour faire selon tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre.

 21 Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.

22 Et Hilkiah (Hilkija) et ceux que le roi avait assignés allèrent vers Huldah, la prophétesse, la femme de Shallum, le fils de Tikvath, le fils de Hasrah, gardien de la garde-robe ;( or elle demeurait à Jérusalem, dans le collège) ; et ils lui parlèrent dans ce sens.

 22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.

23 ¶ Et elle leur répondit : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël : Dites à l’homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi :

 23 ¶ And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,

24 Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Voici, je vais faire venir du mal sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, c‘est-à-dire, toutes les malédictions qui sont écrites dans le livre qu’on a lu devant le roi de Judah (Juda).

 24 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:

25 Parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné, et qu’ils ont brûlé de l’encens à d’autres dieux, pour me provoquer au courroux par toutes les œuvres de leurs mains, c’est pourquoi ma colère sera répandue sur ce lieu, et elle ne sera pas éteinte.

 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 Et quant au roi de Judah (Juda), qui vous a envoyés pour s’enquérir du SEIGNEUR, ainsi vous lui direz : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, concernant les paroles que tu as entendues :

 26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;

27 Parce que ton cœur a été sensible, et que tu t’es humilié devant Dieu, quand tu as entendu ses paroles contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants ; parce que tu t’es humilié devant moi, et que tu as déchiré tes vêtements, et que tu as pleuré devant moi, moi aussi, je Iai moi-même entendu, dit le SEIGNEUR.

 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.

28 Voici, je vais te recueillir avec tes pères, et tu seras recueilli en paix dans ta tombe, et tes yeux ne verront pas tout le mal que je vais faire venir sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants. Et ils rapportèrent au roi cette parole.

 28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

29 ¶ Alors le roi envoya rassembler tous les anciens de Judah (Juda) et de Jérusalem.

 29 ¶ Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 Et le roi monta à la maison du SEIGNEUR avec tous les hommes de Judah (Juda), et les habitants de Jérusalem, et les prêtres et les Lévites, et tout le peuple, grand et petit ; et il lut à leurs oreilles toutes les paroles du livre de l’alliance, qui avait été trouvé dans la maison du SEIGNEUR.

 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.

31 Et le roi se tint debout à sa place ; et fit une alliance devant le SEIGNEUR, de marcher en suivant le SEIGNEUR et de garder ses commandements, et ses témoignages et ses statuts, de tout son cœur et de toute son âme, pour pratiquer les paroles de l’alliance qui sont écrites dans ce livre.

 31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

32 Et il fit tenir debout tous ceux qui étaient présents à Jérusalem et en Benjamin- Et les habitants de Jérusalem firent selon l’alliance de Dieu, le Dieu de leurs pères.

 32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 Et Josiah (Josias) ôta toutes les abominations de tous les pays appartenant aux enfants d’Israël, et il obligea tous ceux qui étaient présents en Israël à servir, c’est-à-dire à servir le SEIGNEUR leur Dieu. Et durant tous ses jours, ils ne se détournèrent pas du SEIGNEUR, le Dieu de leurs pères.

 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
