1 En la troisième année du règne de Jehoiakim (Jéhojakim) roi de Judah (Juda), Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), roi de Babylone, vint vers Jérusalem et l’assiégea.

 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

2 Et le Seigneur livra Jehoiakim (Jéhojakim), roi de Judah (Juda) en sa main, ainsi qu’une partie des ustensiles de la maison de Dieu ; lesquels il, Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), les transporta au pays de Sinhar (Shinhar), dans la maison de son dieu, et il apporta les ustensiles dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.

 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

3 ¶ Et le roi dit à Ashpenaz, chef de ses eunuques, qu’il amène certains enfants d’Israël, de la semence royale et des princes,

 3 ¶ And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;

4 Des jeunes enfants en qui il n’y avait aucun défaut, de belle apparence, et adroits en toute sagesse, et aptes en connaissance et comprenant la science, et en lesquels il y avait la capacité de se tenir dans le palais du roi, et de leur enseigner les lettres et la langue des Chaldéens.

 4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

5 Et le roi leur assigna, une portion journalière des mets du roi et du vin dont il buvait, afin qu’on les nourrit ainsi trois ans, et qu’ensuite ils puissent se tenir devant le roi.

 5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

6 Et parmi eux il y avait des enfants de Judah (Juda) , Daniel, Hananiah (Hanania), Mishael (Mishaël), et Azariah (Azaria).

 6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

7 À qui le prince des eunuques leur donna des noms il donna à Daniel le nom de Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar) ; à Hananiah (Hanania) celui de Shadrach (Shadrac) ; à Mishael (Mishaël) celui de Meshach (Méshac) ; et à Azariah (Azaria) celui d’Abednego (Abed-Nego).

 7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

8 ¶ Mais Daniel proposa dans son cœur qu’il ne se souillerait par la portion des mets du roi, ni par le vin qu’il buvait ; c’est pourquoi il demanda au prince des eunuques, afin qu’il ne puisse pas se souiller.

 8 ¶ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

9 Et Dieu a apporté à Daniel faveur et amour compatissant de la part du prince des eunuques.

 9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

10 Et le prince des eunuques dit à Daniel : Je crains le roi mon seigneur, qui a assigné votre nourriture et votre boisson ; car pourquoi verrait-il vos visages plus abattus que ceux des jeunes enfants qui sont vos semblables ? Et mettriez-vous ma tête en danger auprès du roi.

 10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

11 Mais Daniel dit à Melzar, que le prince des eunuques avait établi sur Daniel, Hananiah (Hanania), Mishael (Mishaël) et Azariah (Azaria) :

 11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12 Éprouve tes serviteurs, je te supplie, pendant dix jours, et laisse-leur nous donner des légumes à manger et de l’eau à boire ;

 12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13 Puis qu’on regarde nos aspects devant toi et l’aspect des jeunes enfants qui mangent la portion des mets du roi ; et tu agiras avec tes serviteurs selon ce que tu auras vu.

 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14 Alors il leur consentit cela, et les éprouva pendant dix jours.

 14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

15 Et au bout de dix jours, leurs aspects paraissaient en meilleur état et ils avaient plus grossis que tous les jeunes enfants qui mangeaient la portion des mets du roi.

 15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.

16 Ainsi Melzar enleva la portion de leur nourriture et le vin qu’ils devaient boire, et il leur donna des légumes.

 16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

17 ¶ Quant à ces quatre jeunes enfants, Dieu leur donna connaissance et facilité d’apprendre, ainsi que la sagesse ; et Daniel avait de la compréhension dans toutes sortes de visions et de rêves.

 17 ¶ As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

18 Et au bout des jours fixés par le roi pour qu’on les lui amène, le prince des eunuques les amena devant Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar).

 18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

19 Le roi s’entretint avec eux ; et parmi eux tous, il ne s’en trouva aucun comme Daniel, Hananiah (Hanania), Mishael (Mishaël) et Azariah (Azaria) ; c’est pourquoi ils se tinrent devant le roi.

 19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20 Et dans toute affaire de sagesse et d’intelligence, que le roi leur demandait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les magiciens et astrologues qui étaient dans tout son royaume.

 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

21 Ainsi Daniel continua jusqu’à la première année du roi Cyrus.

 21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
