1 Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) le roi, à tous les peuples, aux nations et langues qui demeurent sur toute la terre ; que la paix vous soit multipliée.

 1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

2 J’ai pensé qu’il était bon de montrer les signes et les prodiges que le Dieu a faits en ma faveur.

 2 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.

3 Combien grands sont ses signes ! Et combien puissants sont ses prodiges ! Son royaume est un royaume éternel, et sa domination est de génération en génération.

 3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

4 ¶ Moi, Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), j’étais tranquille dans ma maison, et florissant dans mon palais.

 4 ¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace:

5 Je vis un rêve qui m’effraya, et mes pensées sur mon lit et les visions de ma tête me troublèrent.

 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

6 C’est pourquoi je publiais un décret de faire venir devant moi tous les hommes sages de Babylone, afin qu’ils puissent me faire connaître l’interprétation du rêve.

 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.

7 Alors vinrent les magiciens, les astrologues, les Chaldéens et les devins, et je leur dis le rêve, mais ils ne m’ont pas fait connaître l’interprétation.

 7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

8 ¶ Mais à la fin, Daniel entra devant moi, dont le nom est Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar), selon le nom de mon dieu, et en qui est l’esprit des dieux saints ; et je racontai le rêve devant lui, disant :

8 ¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

9 Ô Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar), chef des magiciens, parce que je sais que l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi, et qu’aucun secret ne t’inquiète, dis-moi les visions que j’ai vues en rêve et donne-m’en l’interprétation.

 9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

10 Les visions de ma tête sur mon lit étaient ainsi : Je regardais, et voici, un arbre au milieu de la terre, et sa hauteur était grande.

 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.

11 L’arbre grandissait et était fort, et son sommet atteignait le ciel, et on le voyait jusques au bout de toute la terre.

 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:

12 Ses feuilles étaient belles et son fruit abondant ; et en lui il y avait de la nourriture pour tous ; les bêtes des champs se mettaient à l’ombre au-dessous de lui, et les oiseaux du ciel se tenaient dans ses branches, et toute chair se nourrissait de lui.

 12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.

13 Je voyais, dans les visions de ma tête, sur mon lit, et voici un veilleur, et saint descendit du ciel.

 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven;

14 Il cria à haute voix, et dit ainsi : Abattez l’arbre, et coupez ses branches, secouez ses feuilles, et dispersez son fruit ; que les bêtes s’écartent de dessous, et les oiseaux d’entre ses branches.

 14 He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:

15 Toutefois, laissez le tronc de ses racines dans la terre, et même avec un lien de fer et de cuivre, parmi l’herbe nouvelle des champs ; qu’il soit arrosé de la rosée du ciel, et que sa portion soit avec les animaux dans l’herbe de la terre.

 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

16 Que son cœur d’homme soit changé, et qu’un cœur de bête lui soit donné, et que sept temps passent sur lui.

 16 Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

17 Cette chose est rendue par le décret des veilleurs, et la demande par la parole des saints afin que les vivants puissent connaître que le Très-Haut dirige le royaume des hommes, et qu’il le donne à qui il veut, et y établit le plus innommable des hommes.

 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

18 Ce rêve, moi, le roi Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) je l’ai vu. Toi donc, Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar), raconte-en l’interprétation, d’autant que pas un des hommes sages de mon royaume n’est capable de me faire connaître l’interprétation, mais toi, tu es capable, car l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi.

 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

19 ¶ Alors Daniel, dont le nom était Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar), demeura stupéfait pendant environ une heure, et ses pensées l’agitaient. Le roi parla et dit : Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar), que le rêve ni son interprétation ne t’agitent pas. Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar) répondit, et dit : Mon seigneur, que le rêve soit pour ceux qui te haïssent, et son interprétation pour tes ennemis.

 19 ¶ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.

20 L’arbre que tu as vu, qui grandissait et était fort, dont le sommet atteignait le ciel, et qu’on voyait de toute la terre ;

 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

21 Et dont les feuilles étaient belles et son fruit abondant, et en lui il y avait de la nourriture pour tous, sous lequel les bêtes des champs demeuraient, et dans les branches duquel les oiseaux du ciel avaient leur habitation ;

 21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:

22 C’est toi, ô roi, tu es grand et devenu puissant, car ta grandeur s’est accrue et atteint jusqu’au ciel, et ta domination jusques au bout de la terre.

 22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

23 Et sur ce que le roi a vu le veilleur et saint descendant du ciel et disant : Abattez l’arbre et détruisez-le ; toutefois laissez le tronc de ses racines dans la terre, et même avec un lien de fer et d’airain parmi l’herbe nouvelle des champs ; et qu’il soit arrosé de la rosée du ciel, et que sa portion soit avec les bêtes des champs, jusqu’à ce que sept temps passent sur lui ;

 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

24 C’est ici l’interprétation, ô roi, et c’est le décret du Très-Haut, lequel est venu sur mon seigneur, le roi.

 24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

25 C’est qu’on te chassera d’entre les hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les bêtes des champs, et on te fera manger l’herbe comme les bœufs, et tu seras arrosé de la rosée du ciel, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu connaisses que le Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes et qu’il le donne à qui il veut.

 25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

26 Et quand à ce qu’ils ont commandé de laisser le tronc des racines de l’arbre ; c’est que ton royaume te sera assuré dès que tu auras connu que les cieux dominent.

 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

27 C’est pourquoi, ô roi, que mon conseil te soit agréable, et brise les liens de tes péchés par la rectitude, et de tes iniquités en montrant de la miséricorde envers les pauvres, si peut être il y aura allongement à ta tranquillité.

 27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

28 ¶Tout cela arriva au roi Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar).

 28 ¶ All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

29 Au bout de douze mois, il se promenait dans le palais du royaume de Babylone,

 29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

30 Le roi parla et dit : N’est-ce pas ici Babylone la grande, que j’ai bâtie pour être la maison de mon royaume, par la puissance de mon pouvoir et pour l’honneur de ma majesté ?

 30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

31 La parole était encore dans la bouche du roi, qu’une voix tomba du ciel, disant : Ô roi Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), il t’est dit : Le royaume est retiré de toi.

 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

32 Et on te chassera d’entre les hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les bêtes des champs on te fera manger l’herbe comme les bœufs, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu connaisses que le Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il le donne à qui il veut.

 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

33 À cette même heure la parole s’accomplit sur Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) ; et il fut chassé d’entre les hommes, et il mangea l’herbe comme les bœufs ; et son corps fut arrosé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu’à ce que ses poils deviennent aussi longs que les plumes de l’aigle, et ses ongles comme les griffes des oiseaux.

 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

34 Mais à la fin de ces jours-là, moi, Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), je levai mes yeux vers le ciel, et mon intelligence me revint, et je bénis le Très-Haut, et je louai, et honorai celui qui vit pour toujours, dont la domination est une domination éternelle, et dont le royaume est de génération en génération.

 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

35 Et tous les habitants de la terre sont estimés comme rien ; et il fait ce qu’il veut avec l’armée du ciel et parmi les habitants de la terre ; et il n’y a personne qui puisse arrêter sa main ou lui dire Que fais-tu ?

 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

36 À ce même moment, ma raison me revint ; et pour la gloire de mon royaume, mon honneur et ma splendeur me furent rendus ; et mes conseillers et mes seigneurs me recherchèrent ; et je fus rétabli dans mon royaume, et une majesté excellente me fut augmentée.

 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

37 Maintenant, moi, Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), je loue et’exalte et honore le Roi du ciel, dont toutes les œuvres sont vérité, et ses chemins jugement ; et ceux qui marchent avec orgueil il peut les abaisser.

 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
