1 Le roi Belshazzar (Belshatsar) fit un grand festin à mille de ses seigneurs, et but du vin devant les mille.

 1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

2 Belshazzar (Belshatsar), tandis qu’il goûtait le vin, commanda qu’on apporte les ustensiles d’or et d’argent que son père Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) avait enlevés du temple qui était à Jérusalem, afin que le roi et ses princes, ses femmes et ses concubines puissent y boire.

 2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

3 Alors on apporta les ustensiles d’or qui avaient été enlevés du temple de la maison de Dieu, qui était à Jérusalem ; et le roi et ses princes, ses femmes et ses concubines y burent.

 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

4 Ils burent du vin et louèrent les dieux d’or et d’argent, de cuivre, de fer, de bois et de pierre.

 4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

5 ¶ À cette même heure, sortirent les doigts d’une main d’homme, et ils écrivaient vis-à-vis du chandelier, sur le plâtre du mur du palais royal ; et le roi vit la partie de main qui écrivait.

 5 ¶ In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6 Alors l’aspect du roi changea, et ses pensées l’agitèrent, si bien que les jointures de ses reins se desserrèrent, et ses genoux se cognèrent l’un contre l’autre.

 6 Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

7 Le roi cria à haute voix qu’on amène les astrologues, les Chaldéens et les devins. Le roi parla et dit aux hommes sages de Babylone : Quiconque lira cette écriture et m’en montrera l’interprétation sera revêtu d’écarlate, et aura un collier d’or à son cou, et sera le troisième gouverneur dans le royaume.

 7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

8 Alors vinrent tous les hommes sages du roi ; mais ils ne purent lire l’écriture, ni ne faire connaître au roi l’interprétation.

 8 Then came in all the king’s wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

9 Alors le roi Belshazzar fut fort agité, et son aspect se changea et ses seigneurs furent consternés.

 9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

10 ¶ Or la reine, à cause des paroles du roi et de ses seigneurs, entra dans la salle du banquet ; et la reine parla et dit : Ô roi, vis pour toujours ; que tes pensées ne te troublent pas, et que ton aspect ne change pas.

 10 ¶ Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

11 Il y a un homme dans ton royaume en qui est l’esprit des dieux saints ; et aux jours de ton père, lumière et intelligence et sagesse semblables à la sagesse des dieux ont été trouvées en lui ; et le roi Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar) ton père, le roi, dis-je, l’établit chef des magiciens, des astrologues, des Chaldéens et des devins,

 11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

12 D’autant plus qu’un très excellent esprit, et de connaissance, et d’intelligence pour interpréter les rêves, et démontrant les phrases obscures et décelant les difficultés, ont été trouvés en lui, Daniel, que le roi avait nommé Belteshazzar (Beltshatsar). Maintenant donc, que Daniel soit appelé, et il montrera l’interprétation.

 12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

13 Alors Daniel fut amené devant le roi. Et le roi parla et dit à Daniel Es-tu ce Daniel, qui est l’un des captifs de Judah (Juda) , que le roi, mon père, a amené de Judée ?

 13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

14 Or j’ai entendu parler de toi, que l’esprit des dieux est en toi, et que lumière, intelligence et excellente sagesse se trouvent en toi.

 14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

15 Et maintenant les hommes sages, les astrologues ont été amenés devant moi, afin qu’ils lisent cette écriture et de m’en faire connaître l’interprétation, mais ils ne peuvent donner l’interprétation de la chose.

 15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

16 Mais j’ai entendu parler de toi, que tu peux interpréter et résoudre les difficultés. Maintenant donc si tu peux lire l’écriture et m’en faire connaître l’interprétation, tu seras vêtu d’écarlate et tu auras un collier d’or à ton cou, et tu seras le troisième gouverneur dans le royaume.

 16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

17 ¶ Alors Daniel répondit, et dit devant le roi : Que tes présents restent à toi, et donne à un autre tes récompenses ; toutefois je lirai l’écriture au roi, et lui en ferai connaître l’interprétation.

 17 ¶ Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18 Ô toi roi, le Dieu Très-Haut avait donné à Nebuchadnezzar (Nebucadnetsar), ton père, un royaume et la majesté, la gloire et l’honneur.

 18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

19 Et à cause de la majesté qu’il lui avait donnée, tous les peuples, nations et langues tremblaient devant lui et le craignaient ; il tuait qui il voulait, et il laissait la vie à qui il voulait ; il élevait qui il voulait, et abaissait qui il voulait.

 19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

20 Mais quand son cœur s’enorgueillit et son intelligence s’endurcit dans la fierté, il fut déposé de son trône royal et sa gloire lui fut ôtée ;

 20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

21 Et il fut chassé d’entre les enfants des hommes ; et son cœur fut rendu semblable à celui des bêtes, et sa demeure fut avec les ânes sauvages ; il fut nourri d’herbe comme les bœufs, et son corps fut arrosé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu’à ce qu’il connaisse que le Dieu Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il y établit qui il veut.

 21 And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

22 Et toi, son fils, ô Belshazzar (Belshatsar), tu n’as pas humilié ton cœur, quoique tu aies su tout cela.

 22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

23 Mais tu t’es élevé contre le Seigneur du ciel ; et on a apporté les ustensiles de sa maison devant toi, et toi, et tes seigneurs, tes femmes et tes concubines, vous y avez bu du vin, et tu as loué les dieux d’argent, d’or, de cuivre, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient pas, ni n’entendent, ni ne connaissent, et le Dieu dans la main duquel est ton souffle et à qui sont tous tes chemins tu ne l’as pas glorifié.

 23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

24 Alors de sa part a été envoyée cette partie de main, et cette écriture a été écrite.

 24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

25 ¶ Or c’est ici l’écriture qui a été tracée MENE, MENE, THEKEL, UPHARSIN.

 25 ¶ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 C’est ici l’interprétation de la chose MENE Dieu a compté ton royaume, et y a mis fin.

 26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

27 THEKEL : Tu as été pesé dans la balance, et tu as été manquant de poids.

 27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

28 PERES : Ton royaume est divisé, et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.

 28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

29 Alors Belshazzar (Belshatsar) ordonna, et on vêtit Daniel d’écarlate, et on lui mit au cou un collier d’or, et on publia qu’il serait le troisième gouverneur dans le royaume.

 29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 ¶ En cette même nuit Belshazzar (Belshatsar), roi des Chaldéens, fut tué.

 30 ¶ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

31 Et Darius, le Mède, prit possession du royaume, étant âgé de soixante-deux ans.

 31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
