1 Quand tu sortiras livrer bataille contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des chariots, et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, n’aie pas peur d’eux ; car le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu qui t’a fait monter hors du pays d’Égypte est avec toi.

 1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 Et il arrivera quand vous serez près à livrer bataille, que le prêtre s’avancera, et parlera au peuple.

 2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

3 Et il leur dira : Écoute, ô Israël, vous vous approchez aujourd’hui pour livrer bataille à vos ennemis : Ne laissez pas vos cœurs défaillir, ne craignez pas, et e tremblez pas, ne soyez pas terrifiés à cause d’eux ;

 3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;

4 Car le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu est celui qui marche avec vous, pour combattre pour vous contre vos ennemis, pour vous sauver.

 4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

5 ¶ Et les officiers parleront au peuple, disant : Quel est l’homme qui a bâti une nouvelle maison, et ne l’a pas dédiée ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne à sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille, et qu’un autre homme ne la dédie.

 5 ¶ And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

6 Et quel est l’homme qui a planté une vigne, et n’en a pas déjà mangé ? Que lui aussi s’en aille et retourne à sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille, et qu’un autre homme ne la mange.

 6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

7 Et quel est l’homme qui s’est fiancé à une femme, et ne l’a pas prise en mariage ? Qu’il s’en aille, et retourne à sa maison, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille, et qu’un autre homme ne la prenne.

 7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

8 Et les officiers continueront à parler au peuple, et diront : Quel est ’homme qui est craintif et lâche ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne à sa maison, de peur que le cœur de ses frères ne défaille comme le sien.

 8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

9 Et il arrivera, quand les officiers auront achevé de parler au peuple, qu’ils établiront les capitaines des armées pour conduire le peuple.

 9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

10 ¶ Quand tu t’approcheras d’une ville pour te battre contre elle, tu lui proclameras la paix.

 10 ¶ When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

11 Et il arrivera, si elle te fait une réponse de paix et s’ouvre à toi, alors il arrivera que tout le peuple qui sera trouvé te sera tributaire et ils te serviront.

 11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

12 Et si elle ne fait pas la paix avec toi, mais qu’elle fasse la guerre contre toi, alors tu l’assiégeras ;

 12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

13 Et quand le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu l’aura livrée en tes mains, tu tueras tous les mâles au tranchant de l’épée.

 13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

14 Mais les femmes, et les jjeunes enfants, et le bétail et tout ce qui sera dans la ville tu prendras pour toi, savoir tout son butin ; et tu mangeras le butin de tes ennemis, que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu t’aura donné.

 14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

15 Ainsi tu feras à toutes les villes qui sont fort éloignées de toi, qui ne sont pas des villes de ces nations-ci.

 15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

16 Mais des villes de ces peuples que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu te donne en héritage, tu ne laisseras en vie rien de ce qui respire ;

 16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 Mais tu les détruiras entièrement ; savoir : les Hittites (Héthiens), les Amorites (Amoréens), les Canaanites (Cananéens), les Perizzites (Phéréziens), les Hivites (Héviens), et les Jebusites (Jébusiens), comme le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu te l’a commandé,

 17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

18 Afin qu’ils ne vous apprennent pas à faire toutes les abominations qu’ils ont faites à leurs dieux, et que vous ne péchiez pas contre le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu.

 18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.

19 ¶ Quand tu assiégeras une ville longtemps, en lui faisant la guerre pour la prendre, tu ne détruiras pas ses arbres en forçant la cognée sur eux, car tu pourras manger ceux-ci leurs fruits ; tu ne les couperas pas, (car l’arbre des champs est la vie d’un homme), pour les employer au siège.

 19 ¶ When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:

20 Seulement les arbres que tu reconnaîtras n’étant pas des arbres pour manger, tu lesdétruiras et tu couperas ; et tu en édifieras des remparts contre la ville qui fait la guerre jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit soumise.

 20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
