1 Les paroles du Prédicateur, le fils de David, roi à Jérusalem.
|
1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
|
2 Vanité des vanités, dit le Prédicateur ; vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.
|
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
|
3 Quel gain a un homme de tout son labeur auquel il travaille sous le soleil ?
|
3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
|
4 Une génération passe, et une autre génération vient ; mais la terre subsiste à toujours.
|
4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
|
5 Le soleil aussi se lève, et le soleil se couche, et il se hâte vers son lieu d’où il s’est levé.
|
5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
|
6 Le vent va vers le Sud, et tourne vers le Nord ; il tournoie continuellement, et retourne encore selon ses circuits.
|
6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
|
7 Toutes les rivières courent à la mer, cependant la mer n’est pas remplie ; du lieu d’où les rivières viennent, là elles retournent à nouveau.
|
7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
|
8 Toutes choses sont pleines de labeur, l’homme ne peut les énoncer ; l’œil n’est pas rassasié de voir, ni l’oreille assouvie d’entendre.
|
8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
|
9 La chose qui a été, c’est celle qui sera ; et celle qui est faite, est celle qui sera faite et il n’y a pas de nouvelle chose sous le soleil.
|
9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
|
10 Y a-t-il quelque chose dont on puisse dire : Vois, c’est nouveau ? Elle a déjà été depuis les temps anciens, qui étaient avant nous.
|
10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
|
11 Il n’y a plus de souvenir des choses antérieures ; de même il n’y aura aucun souvenir des choses qui sont à venir de celles qui viendront plus tard.
|
11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
|
12 ¶ Moi, le Prédicateur, j’ai été roi sur Israël à Jérusalem ;
|
12 ¶ I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
|
13 Et j’ai donné à mon cœur de rechercher et de sonder par la sagesse toutes les choses qui sont faites sous le ciel ; cette douloureuse occupation Dieu l’a donnée aux fils de l’homme, afin qu’ils s’y aguerrissent.
|
13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
|
14 J’ai vu tous les travaux qui se font sous le soleil, et voici, tout est vanité et vexation d’esprit.
|
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
|
15 Ce qui est tordu ne peut être redressé ; et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.
|
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
|
16 Je me suis entretenu avec mon cœur, disant : Voici, j’ai atteint un haut rang et j’ai acquis plus de sagesse que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi à Jérusalem, oui, mon cœur avait grande expérience de la sagesse et de la connaissance ;
|
16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
|
17 Et j’ai donné à mon cœur de connaître la sagesse, et de connaître la démence et la folie ; mais j’ai discerné que cela aussi est vexation d’esprit.
|
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
|
18 Car à beaucoup de sagesse, il y a beaucoup de chagrin ; et celui qui augmente la connaissance, augmente la douleur.
|
18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
