1 Car j’ai considéré tout ceci dans mon cœur, pour précisément annoncer tout ceci, que les droits et les sages, et leurs actions, sont dans la main de Dieu ; l’homme ne connaît ni l’amour ni la haine par tout ce qui est devant eux.

 1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

2 Tout arrive également à tous, même évènement pour le droit et pour le méchant, au bon et au net, et au souillé, pour celui qui sacrifie et pour celui qui ne sacrifie pas ; comme est le bon, ainsi est le pécheur, et celui qui jure, comme celui qui craint de jurer.

 2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

3 Ceci est un mal parmi tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, qu’un même évènement arrive à tous ; et aussi le cœur des hommes plein de mal, et la démence est dans leur cœur pendant qu’ils vivent, et après cela ils s’en vont chez les morts.

 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4 ¶ Car pour celui qui est lié à tous les vivants il y a de l’espérance ; car un chien vivant vaut mieux qu’un lion mort.

 4 ¶ For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 Car les vivants savent qu’ils mourront, mais les morts ne savent rien du tout ; il n’y a plus pour eux de récompense, car leur mémoire est oubliée.

 5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

6 Aussi leur amour, et leur haine, et leur envie a déjà péri, et ils n’ont plus à jamais aucune part dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.

 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

7 ¶ Va ton chemin, mange avec joie ton pain, et bois ton vin d’un cœur joyeux ; car Dieu accepte maintenant tes œuvres.

 7 ¶ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

8 Que tes vêtements soient toujours blancs, et que l’huile ne manque pas sur ta tête.

 8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

9 Vis joyeusement, tous les jours de la vie de ta vanité, avec la femme que tu aimes, qui t’a été donnée sous le soleil, tous les jours de ta vanité ; car c’est là ta portion dans cette vie, et dans ton travail, que tu entrepris sous le soleil.

 9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

10 Tout ce que ta main trouve à faire, fais-le selon ton pouvoir ; car il n’y a ni travail, ni invention, ni connaissance, ni sagesse, dans la tombe où tu vas.

 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

11 ¶ Je me suis tourné et vu sous le soleil, que la course n’est pas aux rapides, ni la bataille aux forts, ni le pain aux sages, ni les richesses aux hommes intelligents, ni la faveur aux intelligents ; car le temps et la chance arrivent à tous.

 11 ¶ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

12 Car l’homme ne connaît pas même son temps ; comme les poissons qui sont pris dans le filet de malheur, et comme les oiseaux qui sont pris au piège, ainsi les hommes sont pris au piège au mauvais moment, lorsqu’il tombe subitement sur eux.

 12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

13 ¶ J’ai vu aussi cette sagesse sous le soleil, et elle m’a semblé grande.

 13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

14 Il y avait une petite ville, avec peu d’hommes dedans ; et un grand roi vint contre elle, et il l’assiégea, et il bâtit de grands forts contre elle.

 14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

15 Mais il s’y trouvait un homme pauvre et sage, et il délivra la ville par sa sagesse ; mais nul ne s’est souvenu de cet homme pauvre.

 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

16 Alors j’ai dit : La sagesse vaut mieux que la puissance ; néanmoins la sagesse du pauvre est méprisée, et ses paroles ne sont pas écoutées.

 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 Les paroles des hommes sages sont entendues dans la tranquillité plus que le cri de celui qui domine parmi les insensés.

 17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 La sagesse vaut mieux que les armes de guerre, et un seul pécheur fait perdre de grands biens.

 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
