1 Les mouches mortes font répandre une mauvaise odeur à l'onguent de l' apothicaire ; de même fait un peu de folie à l’égard de celui qui est estimé pour sa sagesse et pour son honneur.

 1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

2 Le cœur de l’homme sage est à sa main droite ; mais le cœur de l’insensé à sa gauche.

 2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.

3 Et même, quand l’insensé marche dans le chemin, sa sagesse lui manque, et il dit à chacun qu’il est insensé.

 3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

4 Si l’esprit de celui qui domine s’élève contre toi, ne quitte pas ta place ; car l’acquiescement apaise de grandes fautes.

 4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

5 Il y a un mal que j’ai vu sous le soleil, comme une erreur qui procède du gouverneur.

 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

6 La folie est placée en de fort grandes dignités, et les riches sont assis dans l’abaissement.

 6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

7 J’ai vu des serviteurs à cheval, et des princes marchant sur la terre comme des serviteurs.

 7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

8 Celui qui creuse une fosse y tombera, et qui brise une clôture, un serpent le mordra.

 8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

9 Qui déplace des pierres en sera blessé ; et celui qui fend du bois en sera en danger.

 9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

10 Si le fer est émoussé, et qu’il n’en ait pas aiguisé le tranchant, il aura alors à y mettre plus d’effort ; mais la sagesse est le plus utile outil.

 10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

11 Assurément le serpent mordra n’étant pas charmé ; et le bavard ne vaut pas mieux.

 11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

12 Les paroles de la bouche d’un homme sage sont pleines de grâce ; mais les lèvres de l’insensé l’engloutiront.

 12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

13 Le commencement des paroles de sa bouche est une folie, et la fin de son discours est une pernicieuse sottise.

 13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 L’insensé est aussi plein de paroles ; l’homme ne peut dire ce qui arrivera ; et ce qui sera après lui, qui peut lui dire ?

 14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

15 Le travail des insensés les lasse, parce qu’ils ne savent pas comment aller à la ville.

 15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

16 ¶ Malheur à toi, ô pays, quand ton roi est un enfant, et tes princes mangent dès le matin !

 16 ¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

17 Béni es-tu, ô pays, quand ton le roi est le fils de nobles, et que tes princes mangent au temps voulu, pour se fortifier, et non pour se livrer à l’ivresse !

 17 Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18 ¶ Par une grande paresse, la construction dépérit ; et à cause de l’oisiveté des mains, la maison a des gouttières.

 18 ¶ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

19 ¶ Un festin est fait pour rire, et le vin rend joyeux, et l’argent répond à tout.

 19 ¶ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

20 ¶ Ne maudis pas le roi, pas même dans ta pensée ; et ne maudis pas le riche dans ta chambre à coucher ; car l’oiseau dans l’air emporterait la voix, et ce qui a des ailes rapporterait l’affaire.

 20 ¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
