1 Et toute la congrégation des enfants d’Israël voyagea du désert de Sin, selon leurs trajets, d’après le commandement du SEIGNEUR, et ils campèrent à Rephidim ; et il n’y avait pas d’eau à boire pour le peuple.

 1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2 C’est pourquoi le peuple se souleva contre Moïse ; et ils dirent : Donnez-nous de l’eau afin que nous puissions boire. Et Moïse leur dit : Pourquoi vous soulevez-vous contre moi ? Pourquoi tentez-vous le SEIGNEUR ?

 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

3 Et là, le peuple fut assoiffé et le peuple murmura contre Moïse et dit : Pourquoi est-ce que tu nous as fait monter hors d’Égypte, pour nous faire mourir de soif avec nos enfants et notre bétail ?

 3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4 Et Moïse cria au SEIGNEUR, disant : Que ferai-je à ce peuple ? ils sont presque prêts à me lapider.

 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

5 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : Passe devant le peuple et prends avec toi des anciens d’Israël et prends dans ta main ton bâton avec lequel tu frappas le fleuve et va.

 5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Voici, je me tiendrai devant toi, là, sur le roc, à Horeb et tu frapperas le roc ; et il en sortira de l’eau, afin que le peuple puisse boire. Et Moïse fit ainsi aux yeux des anciens d’Israël.

 6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 Et il appela le nom du lieu Massah (Massa) et Meribah (Mériba) à cause de la révolte des enfants d’Israël et parce qu’ils avaient tenté le SEIGNEUR, en disant : Le SEIGNEUR est-il au milieu de nous, ou pas ?

 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

8 ¶ Puis Amalek arriva et se battit contre Israël à Rephidim.

 8 ¶ Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9 Et Moïse dit à Joshua (Josué) : Choisis-nous des hommes et sors pour combattre contre Amalek : demain je me tiendrai sur le sommet de la colline, avec le bâton de Dieu dans ma main.

 9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10 Et Joshua (Josué) fit comme Moïse lui avait dit et se battit contre Amalek ; et Moïse, Aaron et Hur montèrent au sommet de la colline.

 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 Et il arrivait, lorsque Moïse élevait sa main, qu’Israël prenait le dessus et quand il abaissait sa main, Amalek prenait le dessus.

 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 Mais les mains de Moïse s’alourdissaient ; et ils prirent une pierre et la mirent sous lui et il s’assit dessus ; et Aaron et Hur soutenaient ses mains, l’un d’un côté et l’autre de l’autre ; et ses mains furent fermes jusqu’au coucher du soleil.

 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 Et Joshua (Josué) décontenança Amalek et son peuple par le tranchant de l’épée.

 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : Écris ceci pour une commémoration dans un livre et inculque-le aux oreilles de Joshua (Josué) : car j’effacerai entièrement la mémoire d’Amalek de dessous le ciel.

 14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 Et Moïse bâtit un autel et appela son nom Jehovahnissi.

 15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

16 Car il dit : Parce que le SEIGNEUR a juré que le SEIGNEUR fera la guerre contre Amalek de génération en génération.

 16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
