1 Lorsque Jethro (Jéthro), le prêtre de Midian (Madian), beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour Moïse et pour Israël, son peuple, et que le SEIGNEUR avait fait sortir Israël d’Égypte ;

 1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;

2 Alors Jethro (Jéthro), beau-père de Moïse, prit Zipporah (Séphora), femme de Moïse, après que ce dernier l’eut renvoyée,

 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

3 Et ses deux fils, dont l’un s’appelait Gershom (Guershom), car il avait dit, j’ai été un résident dans un pays étranger ;

 3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

4 Et le nom de l’autre Eliezer (Éliézer) ; car le Dieu de mon père, dit- il, a été mon aide et m’a délivré de l’épée de Pharaon.

 4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

5 Et Jethro (Jéthro), beau-père de Moïse, alla avec ses fils et sa femme vers Moïse dans le désert où il campait, au mont de Dieu.

 5 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

6 Et il fit dire à Moïse : Moi, ton beau-père Jethro (Jéthro), suis venu vers toi, et ta femme et ses deux fils avec elle.

 6 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 Et Moïse sortit au-devant de son beau-père et lui rendit hommage et l’embrassa ; et ils s’informèrent l’un de l’autre de leur bien-être ; et ils entrèrent dans la tente.

 7 ¶ And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 Et Moïse raconta à son beau-père tout ce que le SEIGNEUR avait fait à Pharaon et aux Égyptiens par égard pour Israël et toutes les difficultés qui leur étaient survenues en chemin, et comment le SEIGNEUR les avait délivrés.

 8 And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.

9 Et Jethro (Jéthro) se réjouit de toute la bonté que le SEIGNEUR avait manifestée envers Israël, de ce qu’il l’avait délivré de la main des Égyptiens.

 9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 Et Jethro (Jéthro) dit : Béni soit le SEIGNEUR qui vous a délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de Pharaon ; qui a délivré le peuple de la main des Égyptiens.

 10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Maintenant je sais que le SEIGNEUR est plus grand que tous les dieux ; car la chose en laquelle ils on agi avec fierté, il a eu le dessus sur eux.

 11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

12 Et Jethro (Jéthro), beau-père de Moïse, prit une offrande consumée et des sacrifices pour Dieu ; et Aaron et tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent manger le pain avec le beau-père de Moïse, en la présence de Dieu.

 12 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.

13 ¶ Et il arriva, le lendemain, que Moïse s’assit pour juger le peuple et le peuple se tint devant Moïse depuis le matin jusqu’au soir.

 13 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 Et quand le beau-père de Moïse vit tout ce qu’il faisait pour le peuple, il lui dit : Qu’est –ce que tu fais avec le peuple ? Pourquoi es-tu assis seul, et tout le peuple se tient-il auprès de toi depuis le matin jusqu’au soir ?

 14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

15 Et Moïse dit à son beau-père : Parce que le peuple vient à moi pour s’enquérir de Dieu.

 15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 Quand ils ont quelque affaire, ils viennent à moi ; et je juge entre l’un et l’autre, et je leur fais connaître les statuts de Dieu et ses lois.

 16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 Et le beau-père de Moïse lui dit : La chose que tu fais n’est pas bonne.

 17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Tu t’épuiseras certainement, toi ainsi que ce peuple qui est avec toi ; car cette chose est trop lourde pour toi, tu ne peux l’accomplir par toi même.

 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 Écoute maintenant ma voix ; je vais te conseiller et Dieu sera avec toi : Sois pour le peuple envers Dieu afin que tu puisses apporter les causes à Dieu.

 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to Godward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 Et tu leur apprendras les ordonnances et les lois et tu leur montreras le chemin dans lequel ils doivent marcher et l’œuvre qu’ils doivent faire.

 20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 De plus tu te pourvoiras, parmi tout le peuple, des hommes aptes, craignant Dieu, des hommes de vérité, haïssant la convoitise et tu les établiras sur eux, pour être dirigeants de milliers, drigeants de centaines, dirigeants de cinquantaines et dirigeants de dizaines ;

 21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 Et qu’ils jugent le peuple en tout temps : et il adviendra qu’ils t’apporteront chaque grande affaire, mais toute petite affaire, ils les jugeront : ainsi cela sera plus facile pour toi et ils porteront le fardeau avec toi.

 22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 Si tu fais cela et Dieu te le commande, alors tu seras capable d’endurer et tout ce peuple aussi ira en son lieu en paix.

 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 Et Moïse écouta la voix de son beau-père et fit tout ce qu’il avait dit.

 24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

25 Et Moïse choisit des hommes aptes parmi tout Israël et les établit dirigeants sur le peuple, dirigeants de milliers, dirigeants de centaines, dirigeants de cinquantaines et dirigeants de dizaines,

 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 Et ils jugèrent le peuple en tout temps ; ils devaient rapporter à Moïse les cas difficiles, mais chaque petite affaire ils la jugeaient eux-mêmes

 26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 ¶ Et Moïse laissa partir son beau-père, et celui-ci s’en alla dans son pays.

 27 ¶ And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
