1 La parole du SEIGNEUR vint à moi de nouveau, disant :

 1 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,

2 Que voulez-vous dire, vous qui utilisez continuellement ce proverbe concernant la terre d'Israël, en disant : Les pères ont mangé du raisin vert, et les dents des enfants en sont agacées ?

 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

3 Comme je suis vivant, dit le Seigneur DIEU, vous n'aurez plus l'occasion d'utiliser ce proverbe en Israël.

 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4 Voici, toutes les âmes sont à moi, comme l'âme du père ainsi aussi l'âme du fils est à moi ; l'âme qui pèche, celle-là mourra.

 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 ¶ Mais si un homme est droit et fais ce qui est selon la loi et ce qui est droit,

 5 ¶ But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

6 Qui ne mange pas sur les montagnes qui ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d'Israël, qui ne déshonore pas la femme de son voisin, ni ne s’approche d’une femme pendant sa souillure mensuelle,

 6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

7 Et qui n’aura opprimé personne, qui aura rendu au débiteur son gage, qui n’aura pas dépouillé par la violence, qui aura donné son pain à l’affamé, et aura couvert d’un vêtement celui qui était nu,

 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

8 Celui qui n’aura pas prêté avec intérêt, qui n’aura pris aucun surcroît, qui aura détourné sa main de l’iniquité, qui aura rendu un jugement selon la vérité entre homme et homme,

 8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

9 Qui aura marché selon mes statuts et aura gardé mes jugements, pour agir en vérité : celui-là est juste, et certainement il vivra, dit le Seigneur DIEU.

 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

10 ¶ S’il a engendré un fils, qui soit un voleu, un sanguinaire et qui fasse une quelconque de ces choses,

 10 ¶ If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

11 Et qui ne fasse aucun de ces devoirs mais qui aura mangé sur les montagnes, et déshonoré la femme de son voisin,

 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,

12 Qui aura opprimé le pauvre et lle nécessiteux, qui aura dépouillé par violence, n’aura pas rendu le gage, et aura levé ses yeux vers les idoles et commis l’abomination,

 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13 Qui aura prêté avec intérêt, et aura pris un surcroît, vivra-t-il ? Il ne vivra pas, il aura commis toutes ces abominations, certainement il mourra, son sang sera sur lui.

 13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 ¶ Mais voici, s’il engendre un fils qui voie tous les péchés que son père aura commis, et qu’il y tienne compte, et ne fasse pas de semblables choses ;

 14 ¶ Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15 Qu'il n’aura pas mangé sur les montagnes, ni n’aura levé ses yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël, qu’il n’aura pas déshonoré la femme de son voisin,

 15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,

16 Et n’aura opprimé personne, n’aura pas retenu le gage et n’aura pas dépouillé par violence, mais aura donné son pain à l’affamé, et aura couvert d’un vêtement celui qui était nu ;

 16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17 Qui aura détourné sa main du dessus du pauvre, qui n’aura reçu ni usure ni surcroît, qui aura exécuté mes jugements et aura marché selon mes statuts, ne mourra pas pour l'iniquité de son père ; certainement il vivra.

 17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18 Quant à son père, parce qu’il a cruellement opprimé, dépouillé son frère par la violence et fait ce qui n’est pas bon au milieu de son peuple, voici, lui, il mourra pour son iniquité.

 18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 ¶ Cependant vous dites : Pourquoi ? Le fils ne porte-t-il pas l’iniquité de son père ? Quand le fils a fait ce qui est selon la loi et ce qui est droit, et qu’il a gardé tous mes statuts et les a faits, certainement il vivra.

 19 ¶ Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20 L’âme qui pèche, elle mourra. Le fils ne portera pas l’iniquité du père, et le père ne portera pas l’iniquité du fils ; la rectitude de l’homme droit sera sur lui, et la méchanceté du méchant sera sur lui.

 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 Mais si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu'il a commis, et garde tous mes statuts, et fasse ce qui est selon la loi et ce qui est droit, certainement il vivra et ne mourra pas.

 21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 Toutes les transgressions qu’il aura commises ne lui seront pas mentionnées ; dans sa rectitude qu’il aura pratiquée, il vivra.

 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 Prendrais-je en aucune manière plaisir à la mort du méchant ? dit le Seigneur DIEU ; et non plutôt à ce qu’il se détourne de ses chemins et qu’il vive ?

 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 ¶ Mais si le droit se détourne de sa rectitude, et commet l’iniquité, et fait selon toutes les abominations que le méchant commet, vivra-t-il ? Il ne sera plus fait mention de toute sa rectitude qu’il a pratiquée dans ses transgressions qu'il a commises, et dans son péché qu'il a fait, en eux il mourra.

 24 ¶ But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 ¶ Cependant vous dites : Le chemin du Seigneur n’est pas équitable. Entendez maintenant, ô maison d’Israël : Mon chemin n’est pas équitable ? Ne sont-ce pas vos chemins qui ne sont pas équitables ?

 25 ¶ Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26 Quand un homme droit se détourne de sa rectitude, et qu'il commet l'iniquité, et meurt en eux, il mourra pour son iniquité qu'il a commise.

 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27 Et encore, quand l’homme méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté qu’il a commise, et qu’il fait ce qui est selon la loi et ce qui est droit, il sauvera son âme vivante.

 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 Parce qu’il réfléchit, et se détourne de toutes ses transgressions qu’il a commises, certainement il vivra, il ne mourra pas.

 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Cependant la maison d'Israël dit : Le chemin du Seigneur n’est pas équitable. Ô maison d’Israël, mes chemins ne sont pas équitables ? Vos chemins ne sont-ils pas inéquitables ?

 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 C'est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun selon ses chemins, ô maison d'Israël, dit le Seigneur DIEU. Repentez-vous, et détournez-vous de toutes vos transgressions, afin que l’iniquité ne soit pas pour vous votre ruine.

 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 ¶ Rejetez loin de vous toutes les transgressions dont vous vous êtes rendus coupables, et faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau ; car pourquoi mourriez-vous, ô maison d'Israël ?

 31 ¶ Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 Car je ne prends pas plaisir à la mort de celui qui meurt, dit le Seigneur DIEU ; c’est pourquoi, tournez-vous et vivez.

 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
