1 Et Jacob continua son chemin, et les anges de Dieu le rencontrèrent.

 1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

2 Et lorsque Jacob les vit, il dit, C’est l’armée de Dieu: et il appela le nom de ce lieu, Mahanaim.

 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

3 Et Jacob envoya des messagers devant lui vers Esaü, son frère dans le pays de Seir, la région d’Édom.

 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

4 Et il leur commanda, disant, Ainsi parlerez-vous à mon seigneur Esaü ; Ton serviteur Jacob dit ainsi, J’ai séjourné chez Laban, et y suis resté jusqu’à présent.

 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

5 Et j’ai des bœufs et des ânes, des troupeaux, des serviteurs et des servantes : et j’ai envoyé annoncer à mon seigneur, afin que je puisse trouver grâce à ta vue.

 5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6 ¶ Et les messagers retournèrent à Jacob, disant, Nous sommes allés vers ton frère Esaü et aussi il vient à ta rencontre, et avec quatre cents hommes avec lui.

 6 ¶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

7 Alors Jacob fut grandement effrayé et fut soucieux: et il partagea le peuple qui était avec lui, et les troupeaux de moutons et de bœufs, et les chameaux, en deux bandes ;

 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

8 Et il dit, Si Esaü vient à une compagnie et la frappe, alors l’autre compagnie qui restera s’échappera.

 8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

9 ¶ Et Jacob dit: ô Dieu de mon père Abraham, et Dieu de mon père Isaac, le SEIGNEUR qui m’as dit, Retourne en ton pays et vers ta parenté, et j’agirai bien avec toi :

 9 ¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

10 Je ne suis pas digne de la moindre de toutes les miséricordes et de toute la vérité que tu as montrées envers ton serviteur ; car avec ma houlette j’ai passé ce Jourdain, et maintenant je suis devenu deux bandes.

 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

11 Délivre-moi, je te prie, de la main de mon frère, de la main d’Esau: car je le crains, de peur qu’il ne vienne et ne me frappe, et la mère avec les enfants.

 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

12 Et tu as dit, Assurément je te ferai du bien, et je ferai ta semence devenir comme le sable de la mer, lequel ne peut être compté à cause de sa multitude.

 12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 ¶ Et il passa la nuit là ; et prit de ce qui venait à sa main pour un présent à Esau, son frère.

 13 ¶ And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

14 Deux cents chèvres et vingt boucs, deux cents agnelles et vingt béliers,

 14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

15 Trente chamelles qui allaitaient, avec leurs petits, quarante vaches et dix taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix ânons.

 15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

16 Et il les mit en la main de ses serviteurs, chaque troupeau à part ; et dit à ses serviteurs: Passez devant moi, et mettez de l’espace entre troupeau et troupeau.

 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

17 Et il commanda au premier, disant, , Lorsque Esaü mon frère, te rencontrera, et te demandera, disant, À qui es-tu ? Et où vas-tu ? Et à qui sont ceux-ci devant toi ?

 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

18 Alors tu diras, lIs sont à ton serviteur Jacob ; c’est un présent envoyé à mon seigneur Esau: et, voici, il est aussi derrière nous.

 18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

19 Et il commanda de même au second, et au troisième, et à tous ceux qui suivaient les troupeaux, disant, , De cette manière vous devez parler à Esau, lorsque vous le trouverez.

 19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

20 Et vous direz de plus: Voici, ton serviteur Jacob est derrière nous. Car il se disait, Je l’apaiserai par ce présent qui va devant moi, et après cela, je verrai sa face ; peut-être qu’il m’acceptera.

 20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

21 Ainsi le présent alla devant lui: et lui-même passa cette nuit-là dans sa compagnie.

 21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

22 Et il se leva cette nuit-là, et prit ses deux femmes, et ses deux servantes, et ses onze fils, et passa le gué de Jabbok.

 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

23 Et il les prit, et leur fit passer le torrent, et fit passer ce qu’il avait.

 23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

24 ¶ Et Jacob demeura seul ; et là un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever du jour.

 24 ¶ And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25 Et lorsqu’il vit qu’il ne prévalait pas sur lui, il toucha le creux (cotyle) de sa cuisse ; et le creux (cotyle) de la cuisse de Jacob fut disjoint, pendant qu’il luttait avec lui.

 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26 Et il dit, Laisse-moi partir, car le jour se lève. Et il dit: Je ne te laisserai pas partir, sauf si tu me bénis.

 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 Et il lui dit: Quel est ton nom ? Et il dit: Jacob.

 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 Et il dit, Ton nom ne doit plus être appelé Jacob, mais Israël : car comme un prince tu t’es escrimé avec Dieu et avec les hommes, et tu as prévalu.

 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29 Et Jacob lui demanda et dit, Dis-moi, je te prie, ton nom. Et il dit: Pourquoi est-ce que tu demandes mon nom ? Et il le bénit là.

 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30 Et Jacob appela le nom du lieu Penuel: car, j’ai vu Dieu face à face et ma vie a été préservée.

 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

31 Et comme il passait au-dessus de Penuel le soleil se leva sur lui, et il boitait à cause de sa cuisse.

 31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

32 Par conséquent les enfants d’Israël ne mangent pas du nerf sciatique, lequel est sur le creux de la cuisse, jusqu’à ce jour: parce qu’il toucha le creux (cotyle) de la cuisse de Jacob au nerf sciatique.

 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
