1 Et Jacob demeura dans la terre dans laquelle son père fut un étranger, dans la terre de Canaan.

 1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2 Ce sont ici les générations de Jacob. Joseph étant âgé de dix-sept ans, gardait le troupeau avec ses frères ; et le jeune garçon était avec les fils de Bilhah, et avec les fils de Zilpah, les femmes de son père: et Joseph rapporta à son père leur mauvaise conduite.

 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

3 Or Israël aimait Joseph plus que tous ses autres enfants, parce qu’il était le fils de sa vieillesse: et il lui fit un manteau de plusieurs couleurs.

 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

4 Et lorsque ses frères virent que leur père l’aimait plus que tous ses frères, ils le haïrent, et ne pouvaient lui parler calmement.

 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

5 ¶ Et Joseph fit un rêve, et il le raconta à ses frères: et ils le haïrent encore plus.

 5 ¶ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

6 Et il leur dit: Écoutez, je vous prie, ce rêve que j’ai rêvé:

 6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

7 Car, voici, nous étions en train de lier des gerbes dans le champ, et, voici, ma gerbe se leva et aussi se tint debout ; et, voici, vos gerbes se tenaient tout autour et faisaient la révérence à ma gerbe.

 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

8 Et ses frères lui dirent: Régnerais-tu vraiment sur nous ? Ou dominerais-tu vraiment sur nous ? Et ils le haïrent encore plus à cause de ses rêves et de ses paroles.

 8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

9 ¶ Et il rêva encore un autre rêve et le raconta à ses frères, et il dit: Voici, j’ai encore rêvé un rêve ; et, voici, le soleil, et la lune, et les onze étoiles me faisaient leur révérence.

 9 ¶ And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

10 Et il le raconta à son père, et à ses frères : et son père le reprit, et lui dit, Quel est ce rêve que tu as rêvé ? viendrons-nous, moi et ta mère et tes frères, vraiment nous courber jusqu’à terre devant toi ?

 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

11 Et ses frères l’envirent ; mais son père réfléchissait le propos.

 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

12 ¶ Et ses frères allèrent garder le troupeau de leur père à Shechem.

 12 ¶ And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

13 Et Israël dit à Joseph: Tes frères ne gardent-ils p as le troupeau à Shechem ? Viens, et je vais t’envoyer vers eux. Et il lui répondit: Me voici.

 13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

14 Et il lui dit: Va, je te prie, voir si tout va bien avec tes frères etde même avec les troupeaux ; et rapporte-m’en des nouvelles. Ainsi il l’envoya de la vallée d’Hebron, et il arriva à Shechem.

 14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 ¶ Et un certain homme le trouva, et, voici, il était errant dans les champs: et l’homme lui demanda, disant, Que cherches-tu ?

 15 ¶ And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

16 Et il dit: Je cherche mes frères: dis-moi, je te prie, où ils gardent leurs troupeaux.

 16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

17 Et l’homme dit: Ils sont partis d’ici ; car je les ai entendus dire: Allons à Dothan. Et Joseph alla après ses frères, et il les trouva à Dothan.

 17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

18 Et lorsqu’ils le virent de loin et même avant qu’il soit près d’eux, ils complotèrent contre lui pour le tuer.

 18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

19 Et ils se dirent l’un l’autre: Voici, ce rêveur vient.

 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

20 Maintenant donc, venez et tuons-le, et jetons-le dans quelque fosse, et nous dirons, Une mauvaise bête l’a dévoré : et nous verrons ce que deviendront ses rêves.

 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

21 Et Ruben entendit cela, et le délivra de leurs mains ; et dit, Ne le tuons pas.

 21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

22 Et Ruben leur dit: Ne versez pas de sang, mais jetez-le dans cette fosse, qui est dans le désert, et ne mettez pas la main sur lui ; afin qu’il puisse le retirer de leurs mains, pour le remettre à son père.

 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

23 ¶ Et il arriva, lorsque Joseph arriva près de ses frères, qu’ils lui enlevèrent son manteau, son manteau de plusieurs couleurs qui était sur lui.

 23 ¶ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

24 Et ils le prirent, et le jetèrent dans une fosse: et la fosse était vide, il n’y avait pas d’eau dedans.

 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

25 Et ils s’assirent pour manger le pain: et ils levèrent leurs yeux et regardèrent, et, voici, une compagnie d’Ismaélites venait de Gilead avec leurs chameaux chargés d’épices, de baume, et de myrrhe, allant les porter en Égypte.

 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

26 Et Judah dit à ses frères: Quel profit y a-t-il si nous tuons notre frère et cachons son sang ?

 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

27 Venez, et vendons-le aux Ismaélites, et que notre main ne soit pas sur lui ; car il est notre frère et notre chair. Et ses frères furent satisfaits.

 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

28 Alors passèrent les marchands Midianite) ; et ils tirèrent et remontèrentJoseph de la fosse, et vendirent Joseph aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent: et ils emmenèrent Joseph en Égypte.

 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

29 ¶ Et Ruben retourna à la fosse ; et, voici, Joseph n’était pas dans la fosse ; et il déchira ses effets.

 29 ¶ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

30 Et il retourna vers ses frères, et dit, L’enfant n’est pas ; et moi, où irai-je ?

 30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

31 ¶ Et ils prirent le manteau de Joseph, et tuèrent un chevreau, et trempèrent le manteau dans le sang ;

 31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

32 Et ils envoyèrent le manteau de plusieurs couleurs et l’apportèrent à leur père ; et dirent: Nous avons trouvé ceci: reconnais maintenant si c’est le manteau de ton fils, ou non.

 32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.

33 Et il le reconnut, et dit: C’est le manteau de mon fils ; une mauvaise bête l’a dévoré ; Joseph a sans aucun doute été mis en morceaux.

 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

34 Et Jacob déchira ses effets, et mit une toile de bure sur ses flancs, et mena deuil sur son fils pendant beaucoup de jours.

 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35 Et tous ses fils et toutes ses filles se mirent à le réconforter ; mais il refusa d’être réconforté ; et il dit: Car je veux descendre dans la tombe vers mon fils menant deuil. Ainsi son père le pleura.

 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

36 Et les Midianites le vendirent en Égypte à Potiphar, un officier de Pharaon, et capitaine de la garde.

 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.
