1 Et il arriva en ce moment-là, que Judah descendit de ses frères, et se retira vers un certain Adullamite, dont le nom était Hirah.

 1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2 Et Judah y vit la fille d’un certain Canaanite, dont le nom était Shuah ; et il la prit, et alla vers elle.

 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3 Et elle conçut et enfanta un fils, et il appela son nom Er.

 3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4 Et elle conçut encore et enfanta un fils, et elle appela son nom Onan.

 4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5 Et elle conçut de nouveau et enfanta un fils ; et appela son nom Shelah: et il était à Chezib, lorsqu’elle l’enfanta.

 5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6 Et Judah prit une femme pour Er son premier-né, dont le nom était Tamar.

 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 Et Er, premier-né de Judah, était immoral aux yeux du SEIGNEUR ; et le SEIGNEUR le tua.

 7 And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

8 Et Judah dit à Onan, Va vers la femme de ton frère ; et épouse-la et suscite une semence à ton frère.

 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 Et Onan savait que la semence ne devrait pas être la sienne ; et il arriva lorsqu’il alla vers la femme de son frère, qu’il la répandit sur le sol, de crainte qu’il donnerait semence à son frère.

 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 Et la chose qu’il faisait déplut au SEIGNEUR: c’est pourquoi il le tua aussi.

 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

11 Alors Judah dit à Tamar sa belle-fille: Demeure veuve dans la maison de ton père, jusqu’à ce que Shelah, mon fils, soit devenu grand: car il disait: Si par aventure il ne meure lui aussi, comme ses frères. Et Tamar s’en alla et demeura dans la maison de son père.

 11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

12 ¶ Et avec le temps la fille de Shuah, femme de Judah mourut ; et Judah fut consolé, et monta vers les tondeurs de ses moutons à Timnath, lui et son ami Hirah, l’Adullamite.

 12 ¶ And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 Et on le dit à Tamar, disant, , Voici ton beau-père monte à Timnath pour tondre ses moutons.

 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 Et elle enleva ses vêtements de veuve, et se couvrit d’un voile, et s’en enveloppa, et s’assit à un carrefour qui est sur le chemin de Timnath ; car elle vit que Shelah avait grandi, et qu’elle ne lui avait pas été donnée pour femme.

 14 And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 Lorsque Judah la vit, il croyait qu’elle était une prostituée ; parce qu’elle avait couvert son visage.

 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16 Et il se détourna vers elle sur le chemin, et dit: Allons, je te prie, laisse-moi venir vers toi ; (car il ne savait pas qu’elle était sa belle-fille). Et elle dit: Que me donneras-tu, afin que tu puisses venir vers moi ?

 16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17 Et il dit: Je t’enverrai un chevreau du troupeau. Et elle dit: Me donneras-tu un gage jusqu’à ce que tu l’envoies ?

 17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18 Et il dit, Quel gage dois-je te donner ? Et elle dit: Ton cachet, et tes bracelets, et ta houlette, qui est en ta main. Et il les lui donna, et alla vers elle,et elle conçut de lui.

 18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19 Et elle se leva et s’en alla, et quitta son voile, et revêtit les vêtements de son veuvage.

 19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 Et Judah envoya le chevreau par la main de son ami l’Adullamite, pour recevoir son gage de la main de la femme: mais il ne la trouva pas.

 20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

21 Alors il demanda aux hommes du lieu, disant, Où est la prostituée qui était au carrefour le long du chemin ? Et ils dirent: Il n’y a pas eu de prostituée dans ce lieu.

 21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22 Et il retourna vers Judah et dit, Je n’ai pas pu la trouver, et aussi les hommes du lieu ont dit: Qu’iI n’y avait pas de prostituée en ce lieu.

 22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23 Et Judah dit: Qu’elle le prenne de peur que nous ne soyons un objet de honte: voici, j’ai envoyé ce chevreau, et tu ne l’as pas trouvée.

 23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24 ¶ Et il arriva environ trois mois après, que l’on raconta à Judah , disant, Tamar, ta belle-fille, a joué la prostituée  ; et aussi, voici, elle est enceinte par la prostitution. Et Judah dit: Amenez-la, et qu’elle soit brûlée.

 24 ¶ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25 Lorsqu’elle fut amenée, elle envoya à son beau-père, disant, C’est de l’homme à qui ceci appartient que je suis enceinte: et elle dit: Discerne, je te prie, à qui sont ceux-ci, le cachet, les bracelets et houlette.

 25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26 Et Judah les reconnut, et dit: Elle a été plus droite que moi ; parce que je ne l’ai pas donnée à Shelah mon fils. Et il ne la connut plus.

 26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

27 ¶ Et il arriva au moment où elle était en travail, que voici, des jumeaux étaient dans son utérus.

 27 ¶ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28 Et il arriva, lorsqu’elle était en travail, que l’un d’eux sortit sa main: et la sage-femme la prit et y lia un fil écarlate, disant, Celui-ci est sorti le premier.

 28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

29 Et il arriva, comme il retira sa main, que voici, son frère sortit: et elle dit: Comment es-tu passé ? cette brèche soit sur toi : par conséquent son nom fut appelé Pharez.

 29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

30 Et ensuite sortit son frère, qui avait le fil écarlate à sa main : et son nom fut appelé.Zarah.

 30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
