1 Et il commanda à l’intendant de sa maison, disant, Remplis de nourriture les sacs de ces hommes autant qu’ils peuvent en emporter, et mets l’argent de chacun à l’ouverture de son sac.

 1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

2 Et mets ma coupe, la coupe d’argent, à l’ouverture du sac du plus jeune, et l’argent de son maïs. Et il fit selon la parole que Joseph avait dite.

 2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 Dès qu’il y eut de la lumière le matin, les hommes furent renvoyés, eux et leurs ânes.

 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4 Et lorsqu’ils furent sortis de la ville, et pas encore très loin, Joseph dit à son intendant: Lève-toi, poursuis les hommes, et lorsque tu les auras rattrapés, dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien ?

 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

5 N’est-ce pas celle dans laquelle mon seigneur boit, et par laquelle en effet il devine ? Vous avez mal agi en faisant cela.

 5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

6 ¶ Et il les rattrapa, et il leur dit ces mêmes paroles.

 6 ¶ And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

7 Et ils lui dirent: Pourquoi mon seigneur dit ces paroles ? Dieu nous en garde que tes serviteurs auraient fait cette chose.

 7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

8 Voici, l’argent que nous avions trouvé à l’ouverture de nos sacs nous te l’avons rapporté de la terre de Canaan: comment alors aurions-nous voler de la maison de ton seigneur de l’argent ou de l’or ?

 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?

9 Que celui de tes serviteurs chez qui elle sera trouvée meure, et nous aussi serons hommes asservis de mon seigneur.

 9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

10 Et il dit, Maintenant qu’il soit fait selon vos paroles : celui chez qui elle sera trouvée doit être mon serviteur ; et vous devez être irréprochables.

 10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

11 Et rapidement ils déposèrent chaque homme son sac à terre, et ouvrirent chaque homme son sac.

 11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 Et il fouilla, et commença par l’aîné et finit par le plus jeune: et la coupe fut trouvée dans le sac de Benjamin.

 12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

13 Alors ils déchirèrent leurs effets, et chaque homme chargea son âne, et ils retournèrent à la ville.

 13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

14 ¶ Et Judah et ses frères arrivèrent à la maison de Joseph ; car il y était encore: et ils tombèrent à terre devant lui.

 14 ¶ And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

15 Et Joseph leur dit, Quelle est l’action que vous avez faite ? Ne savez-vous pas qu’un homme tel que moi peut certainement deviner ?

 15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 Et Judah répondit, Que dirons-nous à mon seigneur ? Que prononcerons-nous ? ou comment nous justifierons-nous ? Dieu a trouvé l’iniquité de tes serviteurs: voici, nous sommes serviteurs de mon seigneur, aussi bien nous que celui chez qui la coupe a été trouvée.

 16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 Et il dit, Dieu nous en garde que je doive faire cela : mais l’homme en la main duquel la coupe a été trouvée, il doit être mon serviteur ; et quant à vous, remontez en paix vers votre père.

 17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

18 ¶ Alors Judah s’approcha de lui, et dit: Oh mon seigneur, je te prie, que ton serviteur dise un mot aux oreilles de mon seigneur, et ne laisse pas ta colère s’enflammer contre ton serviteur: car tu es c’est-à-dire comme Pharaon.

 18 ¶ Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

19 Mon seigneur interrogea ses serviteurs disant, Avez-vous père ou frère ?

 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

20 Et nous avons dit à mon seigneur, Nous avons un père, un homme âgé, et un enfant de sa vieillesse, un tout jeune ; et son frère est mort, et lui seul reste de sa mère, et son père l’aime.

 20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

21 Et tu as dis à tes serviteurs: Faites-le descendre vers moi, afin que je puisse poser mes yeux sur lui.

 21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

22 Et nous avons dit à mon seigneur, Le jeune garçon ne peut pas quitter son père: car s’il venait à quitter son père, son père mourrait.

 22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 Et tu dis à tes serviteurs, Sauf si votre plus jeune frère ne descend avec vous, vous ne verrez plus ma face.

 23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

24 Et il arriva lorsque nous montèrent vers ton serviteur mon père, nous lui racontèrent les paroles de mon seigneur.

 24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 Et notre père dit: Allez de nouveau et achetez-nous un peu de nourriture.

 25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

26 Et nous avons dit, Nous ne pouvons pas descendre: si notre plus jeune frère est avec nous, alors nous descendrons: car nous ne pouvons pas voir la face de l’homme, sauf si notre plus jeune frère est avec nous.

 26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.

27 Et ton serviteur mon père nous a dit: Vous savez que ma femme m’a enfanté deux fils:

 27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

28 Et l’un s’en est allé d’auprès de moi ; et j’ai dit, Sûrement, il a été mis en pièces ; et je ne l’ai pas vu depuis:

 28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

29 Et si vous prenez aussi celui-ci de moi, et que le malheur tombe sur lui, vous ferez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur à la tombe.

 29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

30 Maintenant donc, lorsque je viendrai vers ton serviteur mon père, et que le jeune garçon n’est pas avec nous ; voyant que sa vie est liée à la vie du jeune garçon ;

 30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

31 Il arrivera, lorsqu’il verra que le jeune garçon n’est pas avec nous, qu’il mourra : et tes serviteurs feront descendre les cheveux blancs de ton serviteur notre père avec douleur à la tombe.

 31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

32 Car ton serviteur devint garant du jeune garçon envers mon père, disant, Si je ne te le ramène pas, alors je porterai le blâme envers mon père pour toujours.

 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

33 Maintenant donc, je te prie, que ton serviteur demeure à la place du jeune garçon un homme asservi à mon seigneur ; et laisse le jeune garçon monter avec ses frères.

 33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 Car comment monterais-je vers mon père, si le jeune garçon n’est pas avec moi ? de peur que par aventure je ne vois le mal qui arrivera sur mon père.

 34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
