1 Or la foi est la substance des choses qu’on espère, l’évidence des choses non visibles.

 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 Car par elle, les anciens ont obtenu une bonne réputation.

 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

3 Par la foi nous comprenons que les mondes ont été disposés par la parole de Dieu, de sorte que les choses qui se voient n’ont pas été faites de choses qui apparaissent.

 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

4 Par la foi Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que Caïn, par laquelle il obtint le témoignage qu’il était droit, Dieu attestant de ses dons: et par elle, lui étant mort parle encore.

 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

5 Par la foi Énoch a été transporté pour qu’il ne voie pas la mort; et ne fut pas trouvé, parce que Dieu l’avait transporté: car avant son transport, il avait ce témoignage, qu’il avait plu à Dieu.

 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

6 Mais sans la foi il est impossible de lui plaire: car celui qui vient à Dieu doit croire qui il est, et qu’il est un rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent assidûment.

 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

7 Par la foi Noé, étant averti par Dieu des choses qui n’avaient pas encore été vues, poussé par la crainte, prépara une arche pour le salut de sa maison; par laquelle il condamna le monde, et devint héritier de la droiture qui est par la foi.

 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

8 Par la foi Abraham, lorsqu’il a été appelé pour aller dans un lieu qu’il devait ensuite recevoir pour patrimoine, obéit; et il alla, ne sachant où il allait.

 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

9 Par la foi il séjourna dans la terre de la promesse comme dans un pays étranger, demeurant dans des tabernacles avec Isaac et Jacob, les héritiers avec lui de la même promesse:

 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10 Car il chercha une cité qui a des fondations, dont le bâtisseur et maître d’œuvre est Dieu.

 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Par la foi aussi Sara elle-même reçut la faculté de concevoir une semence, et accoucha d’un enfant alors qu’elle en avait déjà passé l’âge, parce qu’elle jugea fidèle celui qui avait promis.

 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12 Par conséquent il jaillit même d’un seul, et lui était tout comme mort, une aussi nombreuse multitude que les étoiles dans le ciel, et innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer.

 12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

13 Tous ceux-là sont morts dans la foi, n’ayant pas reçu les promesses, mais les ayant vues de loin, et en étaient persuadés, et les étreignirent, et confessèrent qu’ils étaient étrangers et pèlerins sur la terre.

 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14 Car ceux qui disent de telles choses déclarent clairement qu’ils cherchent un pays.

 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15 Et en vérité, s’ils avaient été attentifs à ce pays d’où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient pu avoir l’opportunité d’y retourner.

 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16 Mais maintenant ils désirent un meilleur pays, c’est-à-dire, un céleste: c’est pourquoi Dieu n’est pas honteux d’être appelé leur Dieu: car il a préparé pour eux une cité.

 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

17 Par la foi Abraham, lorsqu’il a été éprouvé, offrit Isaac: et celui qui avait reçu les promesses offrit son seul fils engendré,

 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18 Duquel il avait été dit, Qu’en Isaac ta semence sera appelée:

 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

19 Estimant que Dieu était capable de le ressusciter, même d’entre les morts; d’où aussi il le reçut en une représentation.

 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

20 Par la foi Isaac bénit Jacob et Esaü concernant les choses à venir.

 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

21 Par la foi Jacob, lorsqu’il était sur le point de mourir, bénit les deux fils de Joseph; et adora, s’appuyant sur le bout de son bâton.

 21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

22 Par la foi Joseph, lorsqu’il mourut, fit mention du départ des enfants d’Israël; et donna des commandements concernant ses os.

 22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

23 Par la foi Moïse, lorsqu’il naquit, fut caché pendant trois mois par ses parents, parce qu’ils virent qu’il était un enfant particulier; et ils n’eurent pas peur du commandement du roi.

 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

24 Par la foi Moïse, lorsqu’il fut plus âgé, refusa d’être appelé le fils de la fille de Pharaon;

 24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

25 Choisissant plutôt de souffrir l’affliction avec le peuple de Dieu, que de jouir des plaisirs du péché pour une saison;

 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

26 Estimant l’outrage de Christ comme une plus grande richesse que les trésors de l’Égypte: car il avait égard à la rétribution de la récompense.

 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

27 Par la foi il abandonna l’Égypte, sans craindre le courroux du roi: car il endura, comme voyant celui qui est invisible.

 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

28 Par la foi il célébra la pâque, et l’aspersion du sang, de peur que celui qui détruisit les premiers-nés ne les touchât.

 28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

29 Par la foi ils traversèrent la mer Rouge comme sur une terre sèche: ce que les Égyptiens essayant de le faire se noyèrent.

 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

30 Par la foi les murs de Jéricho s’écroulèrent, après qu’ils eurent tourné autour sept jours.

 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

31 Par la foi la prostituée Rahab, ne périt pas avec ceux qui ne croyaient pas, lorsqu’elle reçut les espions avec paix.

 31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

32 Et que dirai-je de plus? Car le temps me manquerait pour parler de Gédéon, et de Barak, et de Samson, et de Jephté; de David aussi, et Samuel, et des prophètes:

 32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

33 Qui par la foi soumirent des royaumes, effectuèrent la droiture, obtinrent des promesses, fermèrent la gueule des lions,

 33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

34 Éteignirent la la violence du feu, échappèrent au tranchant de l’épée, de faibles ils furent rendus vigoureux, devinrent vaillants dans le combat, mirent en fuite les armées des non citoyens.

 34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

35 Les femmes reçurent leurs morts ressuscités de nouveau à la vie: et d’autres furent torturés, n’acceptant pas la délivrance; afin qu’ils puissent obtenir une meilleure résurrection:

 35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

36 Et d’autres furent éprouvés par de cruelles moqueries, et le fouet, oui, de plus par des liens et l’emprisonnement:

 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

37 Ils furent lapidés, ils furent sciés en morceaux, furent tentés, furent tués par l’épée: ils errèrent çà et là vêtus de peaux de moutons et de peaux de chèvres; étant démunis, affligés, tourmentés;

 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

38 (Desquels le monde n’était pas digne): ils errèrent dans les déserts, et dans les montagnes, et dans les antres et dans les grottes de la terre.

 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 Et eux tous, ayant obtenu une bonne réputation par le moyen de la foi, ne reçurent pas la promesse:

 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

40 Dieu ayant pourvu quelque chose de meilleur pour nous, afin que sans nous ils ne devraient pas etre rendus parfaits.

 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
