1 La parole du SEIGNEUR qui vint à Jeremiah (Jérémie), au sujet de la sécheresse.

 1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.

2 Juda mène deuil, et ses portes languissent ; elles sont noires jusqu’à terre, et le cri de Jérusalem est monté.

 2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.

3 Et leurs nobles ont envoyé leurs petits vers les eaux ; ils sont venus aux puits, et n’ont pas trouvé d’eau ; ils sont revenus leurs récipients vides ; ils sont honteux et décontenancés, et couvrent leur tête.

 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.

4 Parce que le sol est crevassé, parce qu’il n’y a pas eu de pluie dans la terre, les laboureurs sont honteux, ils ont couvert leur tête.

 4 Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

5 Oui, la biche aussi a mis bas dans les champs, et l’abandonne, parce qu’il n’y a pas d’herbe.

 5 Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.

6 Et les ânes sauvages se sont tenus sur les lieux élevés, ils ont humé le vent comme les dragons ; leurs yeux se sont affaiblis, parce qu’il n’y a pas d’herbe.

 6 And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

7 ¶ Ô SEIGNEUR, si nos iniquités témoignent contre nous, agis à cause de ton nom car nos relaps sont nombreux ; nous avons péché contre toi.

 7 ¶ O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.

8 Ô espérance d’Israël, son sauveur au temps de la détresse, pourquoi serais-tu comme un étranger dans le pays, et comme un voyageur qui se détourne pour passer la nuit ?

 8 O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

9 Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme étonné, comme un homme fort qui ne peut sauver ? Cependant tu es ô SEIGNEUR au milieu de nous, et nous sommes appelés par ton nom ; ne nous délaisse pas.

 9 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

10 ¶ Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR à ce peuple : Ainsi ils ont aimé aller çà et là, et ils n’ont pas retenu leurs pieds, c’est pourquoi le SEIGNEUR ne les accepte pas ; il se souviendra maintenant de leur iniquité, et il visitera leurs péchés.

 10 ¶ Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

11 Puis le SEIGNEUR me dit : Ne prie pas pour ce peuple, pour leur bien.

 11 Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.

12 Quand ils jeûneront, je n’entendrai pas leur cri, et quand ils offriront une offrande consumée et une oblation, je ne les accepterai pas ; mais je les consumerai par l’épée, et par la famine et par la pestilence.

 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

13 ¶ Alors disais-je : Ah, Seigneur DIEU ! voici, les prophètes leur disent : Vous ne verrez pas l’épée, et vous n’aurez pas de famine ; mais je vous donnerai une paix assurée dans ce lieu-ci.

 13 ¶ Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.

14 Et le SEIGNEUR me dit : Les prophètes prophétisent des mensonges en mon nom ; je ne les ai pas envoyés, je ne leur ai pas commandé non plus, ni ne leur ai parlé ; ils vous prophétisent une vision fausse, et la divination, et une chose de néant, et la tromperie de leur cœur.

 14 Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

15 C’est pourquoi ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR, au sujet des prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom et que je n’ai pas envoyés, et qui disent : L’épée et la famine ne seront pas dans ce pays : Ces prophètes-là eux-mêmes seront consumés par l’épée et par la famine.

 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

16 Et ce peuple auquel ils prophétisent sera jeté dans les rues de Jérusalem, à cause de la famine et de l’épée ; et il n’y aura personne pour les enterrer, eux, leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs filles, car je répandrai sur eux leur malice.

 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

17 ¶ C’est pourquoi tu leur diras cette parole : Que mes yeux se fondent en larmes nuit et jour, et qu’ils ne cessent pas : car la fille vierge de mon peuple est brisée par une grande ’brèche, par un coup fort douloureux.

 17 ¶ Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.

18 Si je sors aux champs, voici alors des hommes morts par l’épée ! Et si j’entre dans la ville, voici alors ceux qui meurent de faim ! le prophète et le prêtre parcourent un pays qu’ils ne connaissent pas.

 18 If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.

19 As-tu entièrement rejeté Juda ? Ton âme a-t-elle Sion en dédain ? Pourquoi nous as-tu frappés, et qu’il n’y a pas de guérison pour nous ? Nous attendons la paix, et il n’y a rien de bon ; et le temps de guérison, et voici la détresse !

 19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!

20 Nous reconnaissons, ô SEIGNEUR, notre méchanceté, et l’iniquité de nos pères ; car nous avons péché contre toi.

 20 We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.

21 Ne nous ai pas en horreur à cause de ton nom, ne déshonore pas le trône de ta gloire ; souviens-toi, ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous.

 21 Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

22 Parmi les vanités des Gentils y en a-t-il qui fassent pleuvoir ? Ou les cieux peuvent-ils donner des ondées ? N’est-ce pas toi qui le fais, ô SEIGNEUR notre Dieu ? C’est pourquoi nous nous attendrons à toi ; car tu as fait toutes ces choses.

 22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
