1 Et Shephatiah, le fils de Mattan, et Gedaliah, le fils de Pashur, et Jucal, le fils de Shelemiah, et Pashur, le fils de Malchiah, entendirent les paroles que Jeremiah (Jérémie) prononçait devant tout le peuple, disant :

 1 Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

2 Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Celui qui restera dans cette ville, mourra par l’épée, par la famine ou par la pestilence ; mais celui qui sortira vers les Chaldéens vivra ; il aura sa vie pour butin, et il vivra.

 2 Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

3 Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR : Cette ville sera certainement livrée en la main de l’armée du roi de Babylone , laquelle la prendra.

 3 Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.

4 Et les princes dirent au roi : Nous te supplions pour que cet homme soit mis à mort ; car de cette façon il affaibli les mains des hommes de guerre qui restent dans cette ville, et les mains de tout le peuple, en leur disant de telles paroles ; car cet homme ne cherche pas pas le bien être de ce peuple, mais le malheur.

 4 Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 Alors le roi Zedekiah (Sédécias) dit : Voici, il est en votre main ; car le roi ne peut rien contre vous.

 5 Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

6 Alors ls prirent Jeremiah (Jérémie) et le jetèrent dans le donjon de Malchiah, fils de Hammelech, qui était dans la cour de la prison ; et ils y descendirent Jeremiah (Jérémie) avec des cordes. Il n’y avait pas d’eau dans le donjon, mais de la boue ; si bien que Jeremiah (Jérémie) s'enfonça dans la boue.

 6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

7 ¶ Mais lorsqu’Ebedmelech, l’Éthiopien, un des eunuques de la maison du roi, entendit qu’ils avaient mis Jeremiah (Jérémie) dans le donjon, le roi était assis à la porte de Benjamin.

 7 ¶ Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

8 Et Ebedmelech sortit de la maison du roi, et parla au roi, disant :

 8 Ebedmelech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying,

9 Mon seigneur le roi, ces hommes-ci ont mal agi dans tout ce qu’ils ont fait à Jeremiah (Jérémie), le prophète, en le jetant dans le donjon ; et il est comme mort de faim dans le lieu où il est, car il n’y a plus de pain dans la ville.

 9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

10 Alors le roi commanda à à Ebedmelech, l’Éthiopien, disant : Prends ici trente hommes avec toi, et fais remonter hors du donjon Jeremiah (Jérémie), le prophète, avant qu’il meure.

 10 Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

11 Ebedmelech prit donc ces hommes avec lui, et alla dans la maison du roi, au-dessous de la Trésorerie, d’où il prit de vieux lambeaux et de vieux linges usés et de vieux chiffons, et les descendit avec des cordes à Jeremiah (Jérémie) dans le donjon.

 11 So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 Et Ebedmelech, l’Éthiopien, dit à Jeremiah (Jérémie) Mets ces vieux linges usés et ces chiffons sous tes aisselles, sous les cordes. Et Jeremiah (Jérémie) fit ainsi.

 12 And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 Ainsi ils tirèrent Jeremiah (Jérémie) avec les cordes et le firent remonter du donjon ; et Jeremiah (Jérémie) resta dans la cour de la prison.

 13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 ¶ Puis le roi Zedekiah (Sédécias) envoya et fit amener vers lui Jeremiah (Jérémie) le prophète, à la troisième entrée de la maison du SEIGNEUR, et le roi dit à Jeremiah (Jérémie) Je vais te demander une chose, ne me cache rien.

 14 ¶ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

15 Alors Jeremiah (Jérémie) dit à Zedekiah (Sédécias), ne me feras-tu pas certainement mourir ? Et si je te donne un conseil, tu ne m’écouteras pas ?

 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?

16 Et le roi Zedekiah (Sédécias) jura en secret à Jeremiah (Jérémie), disant : Comme le SEIGNEUR est vivant, qui nous a fait cette âme-ci, je ne te ferai pas mourir, et je ne te livrerai pas en la main de ces hommes qui cherchent ta vie.

 16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

17 Alors Jeremiah (Jérémie) dit à Zedekiah (Sédécias) : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR, le Dieu des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : Si tu sors résolument vers les princes du roi de Babylone, alors ton âme vivra, et cette ville ne sera pas brûlée au feu, et tu vivras, toi et ta maison.

 17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:

18 Mais si tu ne sors pas vers les princes du roi de Babylone, alors cette ville sera livrée en la main des Chaldéens, et ils la brûleront par le feu, et tu n’échapperas pas à leur main.

 18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

19 Et le roi Zedekiah (Sédécias) dit à Jeremiah (Jérémie) : Je crains les Juifs qui se sont rendus aux Chaldéens ; de peur qu’on ne me livre en leur main, et qu’ils ne se moquent de moi.

 19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

20 Mais Jeremiah (Jérémie) répondit : On ne te livrera pas. Je te prie, obéis à la voix du SEIGNEUR dans ce que je te dis, afin que tu t’en trouves bien et ton âme vive.

 20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 Mais si tu refuses de sortir, voici la parole que le SEIGNEUR m’a fait voir :

 21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me:

22 Et voici toutes les femmes qui sont restées dans la maison du roi de Juda seront amenées dehors aux princes du roi de Babylone, et ces femmes diront : Tes amis t’ont incité, et ont prévalu sur toi ; tes pieds se sont enfoncés dans la boue, et ils se sont retirés en arrière.

 22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

23 On mènera donc dehors toutes tes femmes et tes enfants aux Chaldéens ; et toi, tu n’échapperas pas de leur main, mais tu seras pris par la main du roi de Babylone, et à cause de toi, cette ville sera brûlée par le feu.

 23 So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 ¶ Alors Zedekiah (Sédécias) dit à Jeremiah (Jérémie) : Que personne ne sache rien de ces paroles, et tu ne mourras pas.

 24 ¶ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 Et si les princes entendent que j’ai parlé avec toi, et qu’ils viennent vers toi et te disent : Déclare-nous maintenant ce que tu as dit au roi, et ce que le roi t’a dit, ne nous le cache pas, et nous ne te ferons pas mourir ;

 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

26 Puis tu leur diras : J’ai présenté ma supplication devant le roi, afin qu’il ne me fasse pas retourner dans la maison de Jonathan, pour y mourir.

 26 Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.

27 Alors tous les princes vinrent vers Jeremiah (Jérémie), et l’interrogèrent : et il leur dit suivant toutes les paroles que le roi avait commandé. Alors ils cessèrent de lui parler ; car l’affaire n’avait pas été divulguée.

 27 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

28 Ainsi Jeremiah (Jérémie) demeura dans la cour de la prison, jusqu’au jour où Jérusalem fut prise, et il y était lorsque Jérusalem fut prise.

 28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
