1 La parole du SEIGNEUR, qui vint à Jeremiah (Jérémie), le prophète, contre les nations,

 1 The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;

2 À l’égard de l’Égypte, contre l’armée de Pharaonnecho (Pharaon Neco), roi d’Égypte, qui était près du fleuve Euphrate, à Carkemish, laquelle Nebuchadrezzar (Nebuchadnezzar), roi de Babylone, battit en la quatrième année de Jehoiakim (Jehoïakim), fils de Josiah (Josias), roi de Juda.

 2 Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

3 Préparez le bouclier et l’écu, et approchez-vous pour la bataille.

 3 Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

4 Attelez les chevaux, et montez, vous cavaliers, et présentez-vous avec les casques, fourbissez les lances, et revêtez les cottes de mailles.

 4 Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.

5 Pourquoi donc les ai-je vus consternés et reculant ? et leurs vaillants hommes sont battus et s’enfuient avec précipitation, sans regarder en arrière ; car la peur était tout à l’entour, dit le SEIGNEUR..

 5 Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.

6 Que le rapide ne s’enfuie pas, et que le vaillant ne s’échappe pas ; ils chancelleront et tomberont vers le Nord, près du fleuve Euphrate.

 6 Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.

7 Qui est celui qui monte comme un déluge, et dont les eaux s’émeuvent comme les fleuves ?

 7 Who is this that cometh up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers?

8 L’Égypte s’élève comme une rivière, et ses eaux s’émeuvent comme les fleuves ; et elle dit : Je monterai, et je couvrirai la terre ; je détruirai la ville et ceux qui y habitent.

 8 Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.

9 Montez, vous chevaux ; et vous chariots ragez ; et que les hommes vaillants sortent ; les Ethiopiens et les Libyens qui manient le bouclier, et les Ludiens qui manient et bandent l’arc.

 9 Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.

10 Car c’est le jour du SEIGNEUR DIEU des armées, un jour de vengeance, afin qu’il le venge de ses adversaires ; et l’épée dévorera, et elle sera rassasiée et sera enivrée de leur sang ; Car le SEIGNEUR DIEU des armées a un sacrifice dans le pays du Nord, près du fleuve Euphrate.

 10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

11 Monte à Gilead (Galaad), et prends du baume, ô vierge, la fille d’Égypte ; en vain tu multiplieras les remèdes ; car tu ne guériras pas.

 11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.

12 Les nations ont entendu parler de ta honte, et ton cri a rempli le pays ; car l’homme vaillant a trébuché sur le vaillant, et ils sont tombés tous deux ensemble.

 12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.

13 ¶ La parole que le SEIGNEUR dit à Jeremiah (Jérémie), le prophète, comment Nebuchadrezzar (Nebucharnezzar), roi de Babylone, Babylone devait venir et frapper le pays d’Égypte :

 13 ¶ The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

14 Déclarez en Égypte, et publiez à Migdol, et publiez à Noph et à Tahpanhes, dites : Tiens ferme et prépare-toi ; car l’épée dévorera tout autour de toi.

 14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.

15 Pourquoi tes vaillants hommes sont-ils emportés ? Ils n’ont pas tenu ferme, parce que le SEIGNEUR les a poussés.

 15 Why are thy valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them.

16 Il en a fait tomber beaucoup, oui, ils tombent l’un sur l’autre, et ils disent: Levons-nous, et retournons vers notre peuple et au pays de notre naissance, loin de l’épée oppressante.

 16 He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

17 Ils ont crié là : Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, n’est qu’un bruit ; Il a laissé passer l’occasion.

 17 They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed.

18 Comme je suis vivant, dit le Roi dont le nom est le SEIGNEUR des armées : Comme Tabor est assurément entre les montagnes, et comme Carmel est près de la mer, ainsi viendra-t-il.

 18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

19 Ô toi fille habitante d’Égypte, équipe-toi pour aller en captivité ; car Noph sera dévastée et ravagée, sera brûlée, sans habitant.

 19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.

20 L’Égypte est comme une très belle génisse ; mais la destruction vient, elle vient du Nord.

 20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.

21 Ses mercenaires aussi sont au milieu d’elle comme des veaux engraissés : car ils ont aussi tourné le dos, et ils se sont enfuis ensemble ; ils n’ont pas tenu ferme, parce que le jour de leur calamité est venu sur eux, ainsi que le temps de leur visitation.

 21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.

22 Sa voix sera comme celle du serpent ; car ils marcheront avec une armée, et viendront contre elle avec des haches, comme des bûcherons.

 22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

23 Ils couperont sa forêt, dit le SEIGNEUR, quoiqu’elle soit impénétrable ; parce que ils sont plus nombreux que les sauterelles, et sont innombrables.

 23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.

24 La fille d’Égypte sera honteuse ; elle sera livrée en la main du peuple du Nord.

 24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

25 Le SEIGNEUR des armées, le Dieu d’Israël dit : Voici, je vais punir la multitude de No, et Pharaon, et l’Égypte, et ses dieux et ses rois, tant Pharaon que tous ceux qui se confient en lui.

 25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:

26 Et je les livrerai en la main de ceux qui cherchent leur vie, et en la main de Nebuchadrezzar (Nebuchadnezzar), roi de Babylone, et en la main de ses serviteurs ; mais après cela, elle sera habitée comme aux jours d’autrefois, dit le SEIGNEUR.

 26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.

27 ¶ Mais toi n’ai pas peur, ô, mon serviteur Jacob, et ne sois pas consterné, ô Israël : car voici, je te sauverai d’un pays lointain, ainsi que ta semence du pays de leur captivité ; et Jacob reviendra, et sera en repos et à l’aise, et personne ne lui fera peur.

 27 ¶ But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

28 N’ai pas peur, ô Jacob mon serviteur, dit le SEIGNEUR ; car Je suis avec toi : car j’en finirai entièrement avec toutes les nations parmi lesquelles je t’aurai chassé ; mais toi, je n’en finirai pas entièrement avec toi, mais je te corrigerai avec mesure ; toutefois je ne te laisserai pas tout à fait impuni.

 28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.
