1 Alors Eliphaz, le Temanite, répondit et dit :

 1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 Un homme sage proférera-t-il par une connaissance vaine, et remplira-t-il son ventre de vent d’Est ?

 2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

3 Raisonnera-t-il avec des propos inutiles ? ou avec des allocutions qui ne servent à rien ?

 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

4 Oui, tu rejettes la crainte et tu empêches la prière devant Dieu.

 4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

5 Ton iniquité inspire ta bouche, et tu as choisi le langage des rusés.

 5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

6 Ta propre bouche te condamne, et non pas moi ; oui, et tes propres lèvres témoignent contre toi.

 6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

7 Es-tu le premier homme qui soit né ? Ou as-tu été formé avant les collines ?

 7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

8 As-tu entendu le secret conseil de Dieu ? Et renfermes-tu seul la sagesse ?

 8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

9 Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions ? Que comprends-tu que nous ne possédions en nous ?

 9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

10 Il y a parmi nous des cheveux blancs, et des hommes très âgés, beaucoup plus âgés que ton père.

 10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

11 Les consolations de Dieu sont-elles trop petites pour toi ? As-tu quelque chose de secret en toi ?

 11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

12 Pourquoi ton cœur t’emporte-t-il ? Et pourquoi tes yeux clignent-ils ?

 12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

13 Que tu tournes ton esprit contre Dieu, et que tu fasses sortir de tels mots de ta bouche ?

 13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

14 Qu’est-ce que l’homme, pour qu’il soit net ? et celui qui est né d’une femme pour qu’il soit droit ?

 14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15 Voici, il n’accorde aucune confiance à ses saints, oui, les cieux ne sont pas purs à ses yeux.

 15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

16 Combien plus abominable et répugnant est l’homme qui boit l’iniquité comme l’eau ?

 16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

17 Je te montrerai, écoute-moi, et ce que j’ai vu je le raconterai,

 17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

18 Ce que les hommes sages ont raconté, l’ayant reçu de leurs pères, et ne l’ont pas caché ;

 18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

19 Eux à qui seuls la terre a été donnée, et aucun étranger ne passa parmi eux

 19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 L’homme malfaisant travaille en peinant tous ses jours, et le nombre des ans est caché au malfaiteur.

 20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

21 Un bruit effrayant est dans ses oreilles ; en pleine prospérité, le destructeur viendra sur lui.

 21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 Il ne croit pas pouvoir sortir des ténèbres, et il regarde toujours à son épée ;

 22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

23 Il court après le pain, disant : Où y en a-t-il ? il sait que le jour des ténèbres est tout prêt à sa main.

 23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24 La détresse et l’angoisse lui feront peur ; elles le surmonteront comme un roi prêt à la bataille.

 24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 Car il étend sa main contre Dieu, et s’est durci contre le Tout-Puissant

 25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

26 Il court sur lui, et même sur son cou, sur les épaisses bosses de ses boucliers.

 26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

27 Parce que sa graisse couvre son visage, et fait des replis de gras sur ses flancs ;

 27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

28 Et il demeure dans des villes dévastées, et dans des maisons que personne n’habite, qui sont prêtes à devenir des monceaux de pierres.

 28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

29 Il ne deviendra pas riche, et sa substance n’accroîtra pas, et il n’en prolongera pas leur perfection sur la terre.

 29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

30 Il ne sortira pas des ténèbres ; la flamme séchera ses branches, et par le souffle de sa bouche il s’en ira.

 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

31 Que celui qui est séduit ne compte pas sur la vanité ; car la vanité sera sa récompense.

 31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

32 Cela sera accompli avant son temps, et son branchage ne verdira pas.

 32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

33 Il secouera ses grappes non mûres, comme à une vigne ; et jettera sa fleur, comme celle d’un olivier.

 33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

34 Car la congrégation des hypocrites sera dévastée, et le feu consumera les tabernacles de corruption.

 34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

35 Ils conçoivent la calamité, et enfantent la vanité ; et leur ventre prépare la déception.

 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
