1 Mais Job répondit et dit :

 1 But Job answered and said,

2 Écoutez attentivement mon allocution, et que cela soit vos consolations.

 2 Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

3 Supportez-moi, et je parlerai ; et, après que j’aurai parlé, tu te moqueras.

 3 Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

4 Quant à moi, ma complainte s’adresse-t-elle à un homme ? Et si cela était, pourquoi mon esprit ne serait-il pas affligé ?

 4 As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

5 Observez-moi, et soyez étonnés, et mettez votre main sur votre bouche.

 5 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

6 Même quand je m’en souviens, j’ai peur, et un tremblement saisit ma chair.

 6 Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

7 Pourquoi les malfaisants vivent-ils, vieillissent-ils, oui, et sont-ils extrêmement puissants ?

 7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

8 Leur semence se maintient en leur présence avec eux, et leur progéniture devant leurs yeux.

 8 Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

9 Leurs maisons sont à l’abri de la crainte, et la verge de Dieu n’est pas non plus sur eux.

 9 Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

10 Leur taureau engendre et jamais ne failli, leur vache vêle et n’avorte pas.

 10 Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

11 Ils envoient devant eux leurs jeunes enfants comme un troupeau, et leurs enfants dansent.

 11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

12 Ils prennent le tambourin et la harpe, et se réjouissent au son de l’orgue,

 12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

13 Ils passent leurs jours dans la richesse, et en un moment ils descendent dans la tombe.

 13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

14 Et cependant ils disent à Dieu : Retire-toi de nous, car nous ne désirons pas connaître tes chemins.

 14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

15 Qu’est-ce que le Tout-Puissant, pour que nous le servions ? Et quel profit aurons-nous, quand nous l’aurons prié ?

 15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

16 Voici, leur bien n’est pas dans leur main ; le conseil des malfaisants soit loin de moi.

 16 Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 Combien de fois la bougie des malfaisants s’éteint-elle ! et combien de fois leur destruction vient-elle sur eux ! Dieu distribue des douleurs dans son courroux.

 17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

18 Ils sont comme la paille exposée au vent, et comme la balle enlevée par la tempête.

 18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

19 Dieu retient à ses enfants son iniquité ; il la lui rend, et il la saura.

 19 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

20 Ses yeux verront sa destruction, et il boira de la colère du Tout-Puissant.

 20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

21 Car quel plaisir a-t-il à sa maison après lui, quand le nombre de ses mois est tranché ?

 21 For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

22 Est-ce que quelqu’un enseignera la connaissance à Dieu ? puisqu’il juge ceux qui sont élevés ?

 22 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

23 L’un meurt dans toute sa vigueur, étant entièrement à son aise et tranquille.

 23 One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

24 Ses seins sont remplis de lait, et ses os abreuvés de moelle ;

 24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

25 Et un autre meurt dans l’amertume de son âme, et n’a jamais goûté les plaisirs,

 25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

26 Ils seront couchés ensemble dans la poussière, et les vers les couvriront.

 26 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

27 Voici, je connais vos pensées et les stratagèmes que vous formez à tort contre moi.

 27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

28 Car vous dites : Où est la maison du Prince ? Et où sont les demeures des malfaisants ?

 28 For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

29 N’avez-vous jamais demandé à ceux qui passent par le chemin ? et ne connaissez-vous pas leurs indices,

 29 Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,

30 Que le malfaisant soit réservé pour le jour de la destruction ? Pour le jour de la colère.

 30 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

31 Qui lui racontera en face sa conduite ? Et qui lui repayera ce qu’il a fait ?

 31 Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

32 Il sera néanmoins porté à la tombe, et demeurera dans le tombeau.

 32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

33 Les mottes de la vallée lui seront douces ; et tout homme sera entraîné derrière lui, et il y a devant lui, une foule innombrable.

 33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

34 Comment donc me consolez-vous en vain, puisque vos réponses restent mensongères ?

 34 How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
