1 Alors Eliphaz, le Temanite (Thémanite), répondit et dit :

 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu, comme peut être utile à lui-même celui qui est sage ?

 2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

3 Est-ce aucun plaisir au Tout-Puissant que tu sois droit ? Ou est-ce un gain pour lui que tu sois parfait dans tes chemins ?

 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 Te reprendra-t-il par crainte de toi ? Entrera-t-il avec toi en jugement ?

 4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

5 Ta malfaisance n’est-elle pas grande ? Et tes iniquités sans nombre ?

 5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

6 Car tu as pris sans raison un gage de tes frères ; et dépouillé de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus.

 6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 Tu n’as pas donné d’eau à boire à celui qui était fatigué, et tu as refusé le pain à l’affamé.

 7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 Mais quant à l’homme puissant, il a la terre, et l’homme honorable y habitait.

 8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

9 Tu as renvoyé les veuves les mains vides, et les bras des orphelins ont été brisés.

 9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 C’est pourquoi des pièges sont autour de toi, et une subite frayeur te tourmente,

 10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

11 Ou l’obscurité, tellement que tu ne peux pas voir ; et le débordement des eaux te couvre.

 11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

12 Dieu n’habite-t-il pas au plus haut du ciel ? Et contemple la hauteur des étoiles, combien elles sont élevées !

 12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 Et tu dis : Comment Dieu sait-il ? Peut-il juger à travers les nuages obscurs ?

 13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

14 Les nuages épais sont pour lui un voile, et il ne voit pas ; et il se promène sur la circonférence du ciel.

 14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

15 N’as-tu pas remarqué l’ancien chemin sur lequel ont marché les hommes malfaisants ?

 15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 Qui ont été retranchés avant le temps, desquels le fondement s’est écoulé avec le déluge,

 16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

17 Qui disaient à Dieu : Retire-toi de nous, et que peut faire le Tout-Puissant pour eux ?

 17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

18 Bien qu’il ait rempli leurs maisons de bonnes choses ; mais que le conseil des malfaisants soit loin de moi.

 18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 Les hommes droits le voient et sont heureux ; et l’innocent les tourne en ridicule.

 19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

20 Vu que notre substance n’est pas retranchée, mais le feu consume ceux qui restent.

 20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

21 Fais connaissance avec lui, et sois en paix ; par ce moyen il t’arrivera du bien.

 21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 Reçois, je te prie, la loi de sa bouche, et entasse ses paroles dans ton cœur.

 22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

23 Si tu reviens au Tout-Puissant, tu seras rétabli ; tu chasseras l’iniquité loin de tes tabernacles.

 23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

24 Et tu amasseras l’or comme la poussière, et l’or d’Ophir parmi les cailloux des torrents,

 24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 Oui, le Tout-Puissant sera ta protection, et tu auras de l’argent en abondance.

 25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

26 Car alors tu trouveras tes délices dans le Tout-Puissant, et tu élèveras ton visage vers Dieu.

 26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 Tu lui adresseras tes prières, et il t’entendra, et tu acquitteras tes vœux.

 27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

28 Tu décideras quelque chose, elle réussira, et la lumière resplendira sur tes chemins.

 28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 Quand des hommes seront abaissés, alors tu diras il faut se relever, et il sauvera la personne humble.

 29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

30 Il délivrera l’île des innocents ; et elle sera délivrée par la pureté de tes mains.

 30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
