1 J’avais fait une alliance avec mes yeux ; pourquoi donc aurais-je pensé à une jeune fille ?

 1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

2 Car quelle portion Dieu envoie-t-il d’en haut ? Et quel héritage le Tout-Puissant envoie des hauts lieux ?

 2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

3 La destruction n’est-elle pas pour le malfaisant ? Et une correction étrange pour les ouvriers d’iniquité ?

 3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

4 Ne voit-il pas mes chemins, et ne compte-t-il pas tous mes pas ?

 4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

5 Si j’ai marché dans le mensonge, et si mon pied s’est hâté pour tromper,

 5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

6 Qu’on me pèse dans des balances justes, afin que Dieu puisse connaître mon intégrité.

 6 Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

7 Si mon pas s’est détourné du chemin, et si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, et si quelque souillure s’est attachée à mes mains,

 7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

8 Alors que je sème et qu’un autre mange, oui, que ma progéniture soit déracinée.

 8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

9 Si mon cœur a été séduit par quelque femme, ou si j’ai fait le guet à la porte de mon voisin,

 9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

10 Alors que ma femme moule pour un autre, et que d’autres s’inclinent sur elle.

 10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 Car c’est un crime haineux, oui, une iniquité qui doit être punie par les juges.

 11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

12 Car c’est un feu qui consume jusqu’à la destruction, et qui aurait déraciné tout mon revenu.

 12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13 Si j’ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante, quand ils contestaient avec moi,

 13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

14 Que ferai-je alors, quand Dieu se lèvera ? Et quand il visitera, que lui répondrais-je ?

 14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 Celui qui m’a fait dans l’utérus de ma mère, ne l’a-t-il pas fait aussi ? et ne nous a-t-il pas façonnés dans l’utérus ?

 15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 Si j’ai retenu aux pauvres leur désir, ou si j’ai fait défaillir les yeux de la veuve,

 16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 Ou si j’ai mangé mon morceau tout seul, et si l’orphelin n’en a pas mangé,

 17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

18 (Car depuis ma jeunesse, il a été élevé avec moi comme près d’un père, et depuis l’utérus de ma mère, j’ai été le guide de la veuve),

 18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

19 Si j’ai vu quiconque périr faute de vêtement, et quelque pauvre manquer de couverture ;

 19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

20 Si ses reins ne m’ont pas béni, et s’il n’a pas été réchauffé par la toison de mes moutons ;

 20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 Si j’ai levé ma main contre l’orphelin, lorsque j’ai vu mon aide à la porte ;

 21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

22 Que mon bras alors tombe de mon omoplate, et que mon bras soit cassé de l’os.

 22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 Car la destruction de la part Dieu était une terreur pour moi, et je ne pourrais pas subsister à cause de sa grandeur.

 23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

24 Si j’ai fais l’or mon espérance, si j’ai dit à l’or fin : Tu es ma confiance ;

 24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 Si je me suis réjoui de ce que ma fortune était grande, et de ce que ma main avait beaucoup acquis ;

 25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

26 Si j’ai contemplé le soleil lorsqu’il brillait, et la lune marchant dans son éclat,

 26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27 Et si mon cœur a été secrètement séduit, et si ma bouche a embrassé ma main ;

 27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 Ceci aussi est une iniquité qui doit être punie par le juge, car j’aurais renié le Dieu qui est en haut ;

 28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

29 Si je me suis réjoui à la destruction de celui qui me haïssait, ou si j’ai été ému de joie quand le mal l’a trouvé ;

 29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

30 D’ailleurs je n’ai pas permis à ma bouche de pécher en lui souhaitant une malédiction sur son âme ;

 30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

31 Si les hommes de mon tabernacle n’ont pas dit : Oh si nous pouvions manger de sa chair ! Nous n’arrivons pas être rassasié.

 31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

32 L’étranger ne passait pas la nuit dans la rue, mais j’ouvrais mes portes au voyageur ;

 32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33 Si j’ai couvert mes transgressions, comme Adam, en cachant mon iniquité dans mon sein,

 33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

34 Craignais-je la grande multitude, ou est-ce que le mépris des familles me terrifiait, en sorte que je me taisais et que je ne suis pas sorti de la porte ?

 34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

35 Oh si j’avais quelqu’un pour m’écouter ! Voici, mon désir est : Que le Tout-Puissant me réponde, et que mon adversaire écrive un libellé.

 35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

36 Certainement que je le porterai sur mon épaule, et me l’attacherai comme une couronne,

 36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

37 Je lui raconterai le nombre de mes pas, comme un prince, je m’approcherais de lui.

 37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

38 Si ma terre crie contre moi, et si pareillement ses sillons pleurent ;

 38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

39 Si j’ai mangé ses fruits sans avoir payé, et si j’ai été la cause de la mort de ceux qui la possédaient,

 39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 Que les chardons poussent à la place du blé, et l’ivraie à la place de l’orge. Les paroles de Job sont terminées.

 40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
