1 Il y avait un homme d’entre les Pharisiens, nommé Nicodème, un dirigeant des Juifs:

 1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 Celui-ci vint de nuit à Jésus et lui dit: Rabbi, nous savons que tu es un enseignant venu de Dieu: car aucun homme ne peut faire ces miracles que tu fais, à moins que Dieu ne soit avec lui.

 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jésus répondit et lui dit: En vérité, en vérité je te dis: À moins qu’un homme ne soit né de nouveau, il ne peut voir le royaume de Dieu.

 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodème lui dit: Comment un homme peut-il naître quand il est vieux? peut-il entrer une seconde fois dans l’utérus de sa mère, et naître?

 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

5 Jésus répondit: En vérité, en vérité je te dis: À moins qu’un homme ne soit né d’eau et de l’Esprit, il ne peut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.

 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 Ce qui est né de la chair est chair; et ce qui est né de l’Esprit est esprit.

 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Ne sois pas surpris de ce que je t’ai dit: Vous devez être nés de nouveau.

 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 Le vent souffle où il veut, et tu en entends le son, mais tu ne peux dire d’où il vient, et où il va: il en est de même de tout homme qui est né de l’Esprit.

 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodème répondit et lui dit: Comment ces choses peuvent-elles être?

 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10 Jésus répondit et lui dit: Tu es un maître d’Israël, et ne sais pas ces choses?

 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11 En vérité, en vérité, je te dis: Nous parlons de ce que nous savons, et témoignons de ce que nous avons vu; et vous ne recevez pas notre témoignage.

 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12 Si je vous ai dit des choses terrestres, et vous ne croyiez pas, comment croirez-vous, si je vous dis des choses célestes?

 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 Et aucun homme n’est monté au ciel, sinon celui qui est descendu du ciel, c’est-à-dire, le Fils de l’homme lequel est au ciel.

 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14 ¶ Et comme Moïse éleva le serpent dans le désert, oui certainement le Fils de l’homme doit être élevé:

 14 ¶ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15 Afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse, mais ait la vie éteréelle.

 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 ¶ Car Dieu aima tant le monde, qu’il donna son seul Fils engendré, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse, mais ait la vie sempiternelle.

 16 ¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 Car Dieu n’a pas envoyé son Fils dans le monde pour condamner le monde; mais afin que le monde par son intermédiaire puisse être sauvé.

 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 ¶ Celui qui croit en lui n’est pas condamné: mais celui qui ne croit pas, est déjà condamné, parce qu’il n’a pas cru dans le nom du seul Fils engendré de Dieu.

 18 ¶ He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 Et c’est ici la condamnation, que la lumière est venue dans le monde, et les hommes ont mieux aimé l’obscurité que la lumière, parce que leurs actions étaient mauvaises.

 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 Car tout homme qui fait le mal hait la lumière, et ne vient pas à la lumière, de peur que ses actions ne soient désapprouvées.

 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 Mais celui qui pratique la vérité vient à la lumière, afin que ses actions puissent être rendues manifestes, qu’elles sont effectuées en Dieu.

 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

22 ¶ Après ces choses, Jésus et ses disciples vinrent dans la terre de Judée; et il s’y attarda avec eux, et baptisait.

 22 ¶ After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

23 ¶ Et Jean baptisait aussi à Énon, près de Salim, parce qu’il y avait là beaucoup d’eau: et ils venaient, et étaient baptisés.

 23 ¶ And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

24 Car Jean n’avait pas encore été jeté en prison.

 24 For John was not yet cast into prison.

25 ¶ Puis une question s’éleva entre quelques disciples de Jean et les Juifs, au sujet de la purification.

 25 ¶ Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.

26 Et ils vinrent vers Jean, et lui dirent: Rabbi, celui qui était avec toi au-delà du Jourdain, à qui tu as rendu témoignage, voici, celui-là baptise, et tous les hommes viennent à lui.

 26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

27 Jean répondit et dit: Un homme ne peut rien recevoir, à moins que cela ne lui soit donné du ciel.

 27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28 Vous, vous-mêmes me rendez témoignage, que j’ai dit, Je ne suis pas le Christ, mais que je suis envoyé avant lui.

 28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29 Celui qui a l’épouse est l’époux: mais l’ami de l’époux, qui se tient là et l’entend, se réjouit grandement à cause de la voix de l’époux: cette mienne joie est donc accomplie.

 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30 Il doit croître, mais je dois diminuer.

 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 Celui qui vient d’en-haut est au-dessus de tous: celui qui vient de la terre est terrestre, et parle de la terre: celui qui vient du ciel est au-dessus de tous.

 31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

32 Et ce qu’il a vu et entendu, de cela il témoigne; et aucun homme ne reçoit son témoignage.

 32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33 Celui qui a reçu son témoignage, a marqué de son sceau que Dieu est vrai.

 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

34 Car celui que Dieu a envoyé prononce les paroles de Dieu: car Dieu ne lui donne pas l’Esprit par mesure.

 34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35 Le Père aime le Fils et a donné toutes choses en sa main.

 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

36 Celui qui croit au Fils a la vie sempiternelle: et celui qui ne croit pas le Fils ne verra pas la vie; mais le courroux de Dieu demeure sur lui.

 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
