1 Or la parole du SEIGNEUR vint à Jonah (Jonas), fils d’Amittai (Amitthaï) en disant :
|
1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
|
2 Lève-toi, va à Nineveh (Ninive), cette grande ville, et crie contre elle ; car leur méchanceté est montée devant moi.
|
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
|
3 Mais Jonah (Jonas) se leva pour s’enfuir à Tarshish (Tarsis), de devant la présence du SEIGNEUR, et descendit à Joppa (Jaffa), et il trouva un navire allant à Tarshish (Tarsis) ; il paya son passage, et y entra pour aller avec eux à Tarshish (Tarsis), de devant la présence du SEIGNEUR.

3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 ¶ Mais le SEIGNEUR envoya un grand vent sur la mer, et il y eut une puissante tempête sur la mer, de sorte que le navire était près de se briser.
|
4 ¶ But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
|
5 Alors les marins eurent peur, et crièrent chacun à son dieu, et jetèrent dans la mer les objets qui étaient dans le navire, pour l’alléger. Mais Jonah (Jonas) était descendu au fond du navire, et s’était couché et était profondément endormi.
|
5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
|
6 Alors le patron du navire s’approcha de lui, et lui dit que fais-tu, ô dormeur ? Lève-toi, crie à ton Dieu, peut-être que Dieu pensera à nous, afin que nous ne périssions pas.
|
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
|
7 Et ils se dirent l’un l’autre : Venez, et tirons au sort, afin que nous puissions savoir à cause de qui ce mal nous arrive. Ils tirèrent donc au sort, et le sort tomba sur Jonah (Jonas).
|
7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
|
8 Puis ils lui dirent : Dis-nous, nous te prions, pourquoi ce mal nous est arrivé. Quel est ton métier ? et d’où viens-tu ? Quel est ton pays ? et de quel peuple es-tu ?
|
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
|
9 Et il leur dit : Je suis Hébreu, et je crains le SEIGNEUR, le Dieu du ciel, qui a fait la mer et la terre sèche.
|
9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
|
10 Alors les hommes eurent extrêmement peur, et ils lui dirent : Pourquoi as-tu fait cela ? Car les hommes savaient qu’il s’enfuyait de devant la présence du SEIGNEUR, parce qu’il le leur avait dit.
|
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
|
11 ¶ Alors ils lui dirent : Que te ferons-nous, afin que la mer se calme envers nous ? Car la mer s’agitait, et était déchaînée.
|
11 ¶ Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
|
12 Et il leur dit : Prenez-moi, et jetez-moi dans la mer, ainsi la mer s’apaisera envers vous ; car je sais que c’est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous.
|
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
|
13 Néanmoins les hommes ramaient fort pour gagner la terre, mais ils ne le purent, parce que la mer s’agitait, et se déchaînée contre eux.
|
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
|
14 C’est pourquoi ils crièrent au SEIGNEUR, et dirent : Nous te supplions, ô SEIGNEUR, nous te supplions, ne nous laisse pas périr à cause de la vie de cet homme, et ne mets pas sur nous le sang innocent car toi, ô SEIGNEUR, tu as fais comme il t’a plu.

14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
|
15 Alors ils prirent Jonas, et le jetèrent dans la mer, et la mer s’arrêta de son impétuosité.
|
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
|
16 Alors les hommes craignirent extrêmement le SEIGNEUR, et offrirent un sacrifice au SEIGNEUR, et firent des vœux.
|
16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
|
17 ¶ Or le SEIGNEUR prépara un grand poisson pour engloutir Jonas. Et Jonas fut dans le ventre du poisson trois jours et trois nuits.
|
17 ¶ Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
