1 Mais cela déplut extrêmement à Jonah (Jonas), et il en était très en colère.
|
1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
|
2 Et il pria le SEIGNEUR, et dit : Ô SEIGNEUR, je te prie, n’était-ce pas là ma parole, quand j’étais encore dans mon pays ? C’est pourquoi j’ai d’abord voulu m’enfuir à Tarshish (Tarsis) car je savais que tu es un Dieu qui fait grâce, miséricordieux, lent à la colère et de grande bonté, et qui te repens du mal.

2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

3 C’est pourquoi maintenant, ô SEIGNEUR, prends, je te supplie, ma vie ; car c’est mieux pour moi de mourir plutôt que de vivre.
|
3 Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
|
4 ¶ Puis le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Fais-tu bien d’être courroucé ?
|
4 ¶ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?
|
5 Alors Jonah (Jonas) sortit de la ville, et s’assit à l’est de la ville ; et il s’y fit une cabane et s’assit dessous à l’ombre, jusqu’à ce qu’il puisse voir ce qui arriverait à la ville.
|
5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
|
6 Et le SEIGNEUR Dieu prépara une courge, et la fit monter au-dessus de Jonah (Jonas), afin qu’elle lui fasse ombre sur sa tête, pour le délivrer de sa peine. Ainsi Jonah (Jonas) se réjouit extrêmement à cause de la courge.
|
6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

7 Mais Dieu prépara un ver, lorsque l’aube du jour se lèverait le lendemain, et il frappa la courge, en sorte qu’elle sécha.
|
7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
|
8 Et il arriva quand le soleil se leva, Dieu prépara un violent vent d’Est, et le soleil frappa sur la tête de Jonah (Jonas), en sorte qu’il s’évanouit, et désira mourir, et dit : C’est mieux pour moi de mourir plutôt que de vivre.
|
8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
|
9 Et Dieu dit à Jonah (Jonas) : Fais-tu bien d’être courroucé à cause de la courge ? Et il dit : Je fais bien d’être courroucé, même jusqu’à la mort.
|
9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
|
10 Alors le SEIGNEUR dit : Tu as pitié d’une courge, pour laquelle tu n’as pas travaillé, tu ne l’as pas fait croître ; qui est venue en une nuit, et a péri en une nuit ;

10 Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
|
11 Et moi n’épargnerai-je pas Nineveh (Ninive), cette grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille personnes qui ne savent pas discerner leur main droite de leur main gauche, et où il y a aussi beaucoup de bétail ?
|
11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
