1 Mais les enfants d’Israël commirent une transgression concernant la chose maudite ; car Achan, le fils de Carmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zerah, de la tribu de Judah (Juda) (Juda), prit de la chose maudite, et le courroux du SEIGNEUR s’enflamma contre les enfants d’Israël.

 1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

2 Et Joshua (Josué) envoya de Jéricho des hommes vers Aï, qui est près de Bethaven, du côté est de Bethel, et leur parla, disant : Montez et explorez le pays. Et les hommes montèrent et explorèrent Aï.

 2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

3 Et ils retournèrent vers Joshua (Josué), et lui dirent : Que tout le peuple n’y monte pas, mais qu’environ deux ou trois mille hommes y montent, et frappent Aï. Et n envoie pas là tout le peuple se donner de la peine ; car ils sont peu nombreux.

 3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

4 Ainsi environ trois mille hommes du peuple y montèrent ; mais ils s’enfuirent devant les gens d’Aï.

 4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

5 Et les hommes d’Aï en frappèrent environ trente-six hommes ; car ils les poursuivirent depuis le devant de la porte jusqu’à Shebarim, et les frappèrent à la descente. Ainsi le cœur du peuple se fondit et devint comme de l’eau.

 5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

6 ¶ Et Joshua (Josué) déchira ses vêtements, et tomba le visage contre terre, devant l’arche du SEIGNEUR, jusqu’au soir, lui et les anciens d’Israël, et ils jetèrent de la poussière sur leur tête.

 6 ¶ And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

7 Et Joshua (Josué) dit : Hélas, ô Seigneur DIEU, pourquoi as-tu fait passer le Jourdain à ce peuple, pour nous livrer en la main des Amorites, pour nous faire périr ? Plût à Dieu que nous avons été satisfaits, et que nous soyons demeurés au delà du Jourdain !

 7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

8 Ô Seigneur, que dirai-je, maintenant qu’Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis !

 8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

9 Car les Canaanites (Cananéens) et tous les habitants du pays l’apprendront ; ils nous encercleront, et ils retrancheront notre nom de la terre ; et que feras-tu pour ton grand nom ?

 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

10 ¶ Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Joshua (Josué) : Lève-toi ; pourquoi te jettes-tu ainsi sur ta face?

 10 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11 Israël a péché, et ils ont même transgressé mon alliance, que je leur avais commandée ; car ils ont pris de la chose maudite, et ils en ont volé, et l’ont dissimulé, et ils l’ont même mis dans leurs affaires.

 11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

12 C’est pourquoi les enfants d’Israël ne pourront pas tenir devant leurs ennemis, mais ils tourneront le dos devant leurs ennemis, parce qu’ils furent maudits. Je ne serai plus avec vous non plus, sauf si vous détruisez la chose maudite du milieu de vous.

 12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

13 Lève-toi, sanctifie le peuple, et dis : Sanctifiez-vous pour demain ; car ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR, le Dieu d’Israël : Il y a une chose maudite au milieu de toi, ô Israël ; tu ne peux pas tenir devant tes ennemis, jusqu’à ce que vous ayez ôté la chose maudite du milieu de vous.

 13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

14 C’est pourquoi vous vous approcherez au matin, selon vos tribus ; et il arrivera que la tribu que le SEIGNEUR aura choisie s’approchera selon les familles ; et la famille que le SEIGNEUR aura choisie s’approchera par maisonnées ; et la maisonnée que le SEIGNEUR aura choisie s’approchera homme après homme.

 14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

15 Et il arrivera, que celui qui aura été pris avec la chose maudite, sera brûlé au feu, lui et tout ce qui est à lui, parce qu’il a transgressé l’alliance du SEIGNEUR, et parce qu’il a commis une infamie en Israël.

 15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16 ¶ Joshua (Josué) donc se leva de bonne heure le matin, et fit approcher Israël selon ses tribus, et la tribu de Judah (Juda) fut choisie.

 16 ¶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

17 Et il fit approcher la famille de Judah (Juda), et il prit la famille des Zarhites ; et il fit approcher la famille des Zarhites, homme après homme, et Zabdi fut choisi.

 17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

18 Et il fit approcher sa maisonnée homme après homme, et Achan, le fils de Carmi, le fils de Zabdi, le fils de Zerah, de la tribu de Judah (Juda) (Juda), fut choisi.

 18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

19 Alors Joshua (Josué) dit à Achan : Mon fils, donne, je te prie, gloire au SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, et fais-lui confession ; et déclare-moi, ce que tu as fait ; ne me le cache pas.

 19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

20 Et Achan répondit à Joshua (Josué), et dit : C’est vrai, j’ai péché contre le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël ; et j’ai fait ainsi et ainsi.

 20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

21 Lorsque j’ai vu dans le butin un beau vêtement manteau Babylonique, et deux cents shekels d’argent, et un lingot d’or du poids de cinquante shekels, je les ai convoités et les ai pris ; et voici, ils sont cachés dans la terre, au milieu de ma tente, et l’argent est dessous.

 21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22 Alors Joshua (Josué) envoya des messagers qui coururent à la tente ; et voici, il (le vêtement) était caché dans sa tente, et l’argent était dessous.

 22 ¶ So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23 Et ils les prirent du milieu de la tente, et les apportèrent à Joshua (Josué) et à tous les enfants d’Israël, et les déposèrent devant le SEIGNEUR.

 23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

24 Alors Joshua (Josué), et tout Israël avec lui, prirent Achan, le fils de Zerah, l’argent, le vêtement, le lingot d’or, ses fils et ses filles, ses bœufs, ses ânes, ses moutons, sa tente, et tout ce qui était à lui ; et ils les amenèrent dans la vallée d’Achor (Acor).

 24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25 Et Joshua (Josué) dit : Pourquoi nous as-tu jeté le troublé parmi nous ? Le SEIGNEUR te troublera aujourd’hui. Et tout Israël l’assomma de pierres, et ils les brûlèrent au feu après qu’ils les aient lapidés.

 25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

26 Et ils élevèrent sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui dure jusqu’à ce jour. Et le SEIGNEUR se détourna de l’ardeur de son courroux. C’est pourquoi le nom de ce lieu-là est appelé la vallée d’Achor (Acor), jusqu’à ce jour.

 26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
