1 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Joshua (Josué) : N’aie pas peur et ne sois pas effrayé ; prends avec toi tout le peuple de guerre, et lève-toi, monte à Aï ; regarde, j’ai livré en ta main le roi d’Aï, et son peuple, et sa ville et son pays.

 1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

2 Et tu feras à Aï et à son roi, comme tu as fait à Jéricho et à son roi ; seulement, vous en pillerez pour vous le butin et le bétail. Place-toi en embuscade contre la ville, derrière elle.

 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 ¶ Ainsi Joshua (Josué) se leva, et tout le peuple de guerre, pour monter contre Aï ; et Joshua (Josué) choisit trente mille hommes puissants et vaillants, et il les envoya de nuit.

 3 ¶ So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

4 Et il leur commanda, disant : Voyez, vous vous placerez en embuscade contre la ville, savoir derrière la ville ; ne vous éloignez pas beaucoup de la ville, mais soyez tous prêts.

 4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

5 Et moi, et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville ; et il arrivera, quand ils sortiront à notre rencontre, comme la première fois, que nous fuirons devant eux,

 5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

6 ( Car ils sortiront après nous), jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons attirés hors de la ville ; car ils diront : Ils fuient devant nous comme la première fois, c’est pourquoi nous fuirons devant eux ;

 6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

7 Puis vous vous lèverez de l’embuscade, et vous vous emparerez de la ville ; car le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu la livrera en votre main.

 7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 Et il arrivera, lorsque vous aurez pris la ville, que vous mettrez la ville en feu ; vous ferez selon le commandement du SEIGNEUR. Voyez, je vous l’ai commandé.

 8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

9 ¶ Joshua (Josué) donc les envoya, et ils allèrent se placer en embuscade ; et se tinrent entre Bethel et Aï, du côté ouest d’Aï ; mais Joshua (Josué) passa cette nuit-là au milieu du peuple.

 9 ¶ Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

10 Et Joshua (Josué) se leva de bonne heure le matin et dénombra le peuple, et monta, lui et les anciens d’Israël, devant le peuple, vers Aï.

 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11 Et tout le peuple, savoir le peuple de guerre, qui était avec lui, monta et s’approcha, et ils vinrent devant la ville, et campèrent sur le côté nord d’Aï ; or il y avait une vallée entre eux et Aï.

 11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

12 Et il prit environ cinq mille hommes, et les mit en embuscade entre Bethel et Aï, sur le côté ’ouest de la ville.

 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

13 Et après qu’ils aient disposé le peuple, savoir toute l’armée qui était au nord de la ville, et son embuscade à l’ouest de la ville, Joshua (Josué) s’avança cette nuit-là au milieu de la vallée.

 13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 ¶ Et il arriva lorsque le roi d’Aï vit cela, qu’ils se hâtèrent, et se levèrent tôt, et les hommes de la ville sortirent lui et tout son peuple, à la rencontre d’Israël pour se battre, au temps désigné, devant la plaine ; mais il ne savait pas qu’il y avait une embuscade contre lui derrière la ville.

 14 ¶ And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

15 Et Joshua (Josué) et tout Israël, firent comme s'ils étaient battus devant eux, et s’enfuirent par le chemin du désert.

 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 Et tout le peuple qui était dans Aï fut appelé pour les poursuivre ; et Ils poursuivirent Joshua (Josué), et furent entraînés hors de la ville ;

 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 Et il ne resta pas un homme dans Aï ni dans Bethel, qui ne sortît après’Israël ; et ils laissèrent la ville ouverte, et poursuivirent Israël.

 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

18 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Joshua (Josué) : Étends la lance, qui est en ta main, vers Aï ; car je la livrerai en ta main. Et Joshua (Josué) étendit vers la ville la lance qu’il avait en sa main.

 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

19 Et ceux qui étaient en embuscade se levèrent rapidement d’où ils étaient, et ils coururent dès qu’il eut étendu sa main ; et ils entrèrent dans la ville, et la prirent, et se hâtèrent de mettre le feu à la ville.

 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

20 Et quand les hommes d’Aï, regardèrent derrière eux, ils virent, et voici, la fumée de la ville montait vers le ciel ; et ils n’ont eu aucune force pour fuir ni d'un côté ni de l'autre. : et le peuple qui fuyait vers le désert, se tourna contre ceux qui le poursuivaient.

 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

21 Et lorsque Joshua (Josué) et tout Israël, virent que ceux qui étaient en embuscade avaient pris la ville et que la fumée de la ville montait, retournèrent, et tuèrent les hommes d’Aï.

 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

22 Et les autres sortirent aussi de la ville à leur rencontre ; ainsi ils se trouvèrent au milieu d’Israël, les uns de ce côté et les autres de l’autre côté ; et ils les frappèrent si bien qu’ils ne laissèrent aucun survivant ni rescapé.

 22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23 Et ils prirent vivant le roi d’Aï, et l’amenèrent à Joshua (Josué).

 23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 Et il arriva lorsqu’Israël eut achevé de tuer tous les habitants d’Aï dans la campagne, dans le désert, où ils les avaient poursuivis, et lorsqu’ ils furent tous tombés sous le tranchant de l’épée jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient exterminés, tous les Israélites retournèrent à Aï, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée.

 24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

25 Et ainsi en fut-il, que tous ceux qui tombèrent ce jour-là, aussi bien hommes que femmes, furent de douze mille, savoir tous les hommes d’Aï.

 25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

26 Car Joshua (Josué) ne retira pas sa main, avec laquelle il avait étendu la lance, jusqu’à ce qu’il ait entièrement détruit tous les habitants d’Aï.

 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 Les Israélites prirent seulement pour eux le bétail et le butin de cette ville-là, selon la parole du SEIGNEUR qu’il avait commandé à Joshua (Josué).

 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.

28 Et Joshua (Josué) brûla Aï, et en fit un monceau à toujours, savoir une désolation jusqu’à ce jour.

 28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

29 Et il pendit le roi d’Aï à un arbre, jusqu’au soir ; et comme le soleil se couchait, Joshua (Josué) commanda que l’on descende son cadavre de l’arbre, et on le jeta à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, et on éleva sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui est demeuré jusqu’à ce jour.

 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

30 ¶ Alors Joshua (Josué) bâtit un autel au SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël, sur le mont Ebal,

 30 ¶ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

31 Comme Moïse le serviteur du SEIGNEUR, l’avait commandé aux enfants d’Israël, ainsi qu’il est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, un autel de pierres entières, sur lesquelles personne n’avait levé le fer ; et ils y offrirent des offrandes consumées au SEIGNEUR, et sacrifièrent des offrandes de paix.

 31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

32 ¶ Et il écrivit là, sur les pierres, une copie de la loi de Moïse, laquelle il avait écrite devant les enfants d’Israël.

 32 ¶ And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

33 Et tout Israël, et ses anciens, et ses officiers, et ses juges, se tenaient d’un côté et de l’autre côté de l’arche, devant les prêtres, les Lévites, qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance du SEIGNEUR ; tant l’étranger que celui qui était né parmi eux, une moitié du côté du mont de Garizim, et l’autre moitié du côté du mont Ebal, comme Moïse le serviteur du SEIGNEUR, l’avait commandé auparavant, afin qu’on bénisse le peuple d’Israël.

 33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34 Après cela, il lut toutes les paroles de la loi, les bénédictions et les malédictions, selon tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi.

 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 Il n’y eut pas un mot de tout ce que Moïse avait commandé, que Joshua (Josué) ne lût en présence de toute la congrégation d’Israël, des femmes, des petits enfants, et des étrangers qui étaient parmi eux.

 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
