1 Alors Joshua (Josué) appela les Reubenites, les Gadites, et la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé),

 1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

2 Et il leur dit : Vous avez gardé tout ce que vous avait commandé Moïse, le serviteur du SEIGNEUR, et vous avez obéi à ma voix en tout ce que je vous ai commandé.

 2 And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

3 Vous n’avez pas abandonné vos frères, pendant tous ces nombreux jours, jusqu’à ce jour ; mais vous avez gardé le commandement du SEIGNEUR votre Dieu.

 3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.

4 Et maintenant le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu a donné du repos à vos frères, comme il le leur avait promis : c’est pourquoi maintenant retournez, et allez dans vos tentes, et dans la terre de votre possession, laquelle Moïse le serviteur du SEIGNEUR, vous a donnée de l’autre côté du Jourdain.

 4 And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.

5 Mais prenez grand soin d’accomplir le commandement et la loi que Moïse le serviteur du SEIGNEUR, vous a commandés ; d’aimer le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu, et de marcher dans tous ses chemins, et de garder ses commandements, et de s’attacher à lui, et de le servir de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme.

 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

6 Puis Joshua (Josué) les bénit et les renvoya ; et ils s’en allèrent dans leurs tentes.

 6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.

7 ¶ Or Moïse avait donné à la moitié de la tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) une possession en Bashan ; mais à l’autre moitié, Joshua (Josué) donna une possession parmi leurs frères, de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, vers l’Ouest. Et lorsque Joshua (Josué) les renvoya eux aussi vers leurs tentes, il les bénit,

 7 ¶ Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,

8 Et leur parla, disant : Retournez à vos tentes avec de grandes richesses et avec une fort grande quantité de bétail, avec de l’argent, avec de l’or, du cuivre, du fer, et avec une grande abondance de vêtements : partagez le butin de vos ennemis avec vos frères.

 8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

9 ¶ Et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), et les enfants de Gad, et la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) retournèrent et quittèrent les enfants d’Israël à Shiloh (Silo), qui est dans la terre de Canaan, pour aller au pays de Gilead (Galaad), dans la terre de leur possession, de laquelle ils avaient reçu la possession selon la parole du SEIGNEUR par la main de Moïse.

 9 ¶ And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

10 ¶ Et quand ils arrivèrent aux limites du Jourdain qui sont dans la terre de Canaan, les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), les enfants de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) bâtirent là un autel, près du Jourdain, autel de grande apparence.

 10 ¶ And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

11 ¶ Et les enfants d’Israël entendirent dire : Voici, les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), les enfants de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) ont bâti un autel, en face de la terre de Canaan, sur les limites du Jourdain, du côté des enfants d’Israël.

 11 ¶ And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

12 Et lorsque les enfants d’Israël entendirent cela, toute la congrégation des enfants d’Israël s’assembla à Shiloh (Silo) pour monter faire la guerre contre eux.

 12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.

13 Et les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent vers les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), vers les enfants de Gad et vers la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé), au pays de Gilead (Galaad), Phinehas (Phinées) le fils d’Eleazar, le prêtre ;

 13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

14 Et avec lui dix princes, un prince par maison principale de chaque tribu d’Israël ; et chacun d’eux était chef de maison de leurs pères parmi les milliers d’Israël.

 14 And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.

15 ¶ Et ils vinrent vers les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), vers les enfants de Gad et vers la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé), au pays de Gilead (Galaad) ; et ils leur parlèrent, disant :

 15 ¶ And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

16 Ainsi dit toute la congrégation du SEIGNEUR : Quelle est cette infraction que vous avez commise contre le Dieu d’Israël, pour vous détourner aujourd’hui en ne suivant pas le SEIGNEUR, en ce que vous avez bâti un autel, pour vous rebeller aujourd’hui contre le SEIGNEUR ?

 16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD?

17 Est-ce trop peu pour nous que l’iniquité de Peor, dont nous ne sommes pas purifiés jusqu’à aujourd’hui, quoiqu’il y ait eu une plaie sur la congrégation du SEIGNEUR,

 17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD,

18 Et que vous vous détourniez aujourd’hui de suivre le SEIGNEUR ? et il arrivera, voyant que vous vous rebellez aujourd’hui contre le SEIGNEUR, que demain il sera en colère contre toute la congrégation d’Israël.

 18 But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

19 Toutefois, si la terre de votre possession est souillée, alors passez dans la terre de la possession du SEIGNEUR, où demeure le tabernacle du SEIGNEUR, et prenez possession parmi nous ; mais ne vous rebellez pas contre le SEIGNEUR, et ne vous rebellez pas contre nous, en vous bâtissant un autel à côté de l’autel du SEIGNEUR notre Dieu.

 19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.

20 Achan (Acan) le fils de Zerah, ne commit-il pas une transgression au sujet de la chose maudite, et la colère ne tomba-t-elle pas sur toute la congrégation d’Israël ? Et cet homme ne périt pas seul pour son iniquité.

 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21 ¶ Alors les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), les enfants de Gad, et la demi-tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) répondirent et dirent aux chefs des milliers d’Israël :

 21 ¶ Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu des dieux, le SEIGNEUR Dieu des dieux, sait lui-même, et Israël lui le saura, si c’est par rébellion, ou si c’est par transgression contre le SEIGNEUR, (ne nous sauve pas aujourd’hui).

 22 The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)

23 Que nous nous sommes bâti un autel pour nous détourner de suivre le SEIGNEUR, ou si c’est pour y offrir une offrande consumée ou une offrande de farine, ou si c’est pour y offrir des offrandes de paix, que le SEIGNEUR lui-même le requière,

 23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

24 Et si plutôt nous ne l’avons fait pour crainte de cette chose, disant : Un jour viendra que vos enfants pourraient parler à nos enfants, disant : Qu’avez-vous à faire avec le SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël ?

 24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?

25 Car le SEIGNEUR a mis le Jourdain pour frontière entre nous et vous, vous enfants de Reuben (Ruben) et enfants de Gad ; vous n’avez pas de part au SEIGNEUR ; ainsi vos enfants feraient que nos enfants cesseraient de craindre le SEIGNEUR.

 25 For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

26 C’est pourquoi, nous avons dit : Mettons-nous maintenant à bâtir un autel, non pour offrande consumée ni pour sacrifice,

 26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

27 Mais pour qu’il puisse être un témoin entre nous et vous, et entre nos générations après nous, pour que nous fassions le service du SEIGNEUR devant lui, par nos offrandes consumées, nos sacrifices et par nos offrandes de paix, afin que vos enfants ne puissent dire à l’avenir à nos enfants : Vous n’avez aucune part avec le SEIGNEUR.

 27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.

28 C’est pourquoi nous avons dit : Qu’il arrivera, lorsqu’ils nous diront ceci ou à nos générations dans l’avenir, que nous pourrons dire de nouveau : Voyez la forme de l’autel du SEIGNEUR, que nos pères ont fait non pour des offrandes consumées ni pour des sacrifices, mais pour être un témoin entre nous et vous.

 28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

29 À Dieu ne plaise que nous nous rebellions contre le SEIGNEUR, et que nous nous détournions de suivre aujourd’hui le SEIGNEUR en bâtissant un autel pour des offrandes consumées, pour des offrandes de farine et pour des sacrifices, à côté de l’autel du SEIGNEUR notre Dieu, qui est devant son tabernacle.

 29 God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

30 ¶ Et lorsque Phinehas (Phinées), le prêtre, et les princes de la congrégation, et les chefs des milliers d’Israël, qui étaient avec lui, entendirent les paroles que prononcèrent les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Manasseh (Manassé), cela leur plut.

 30 ¶ And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

31 Et Phinehas (Phinées) le fils d’Eleazar, le prêtre, dit aux enfants de Reuben (Ruben), aux enfants de Gad, et aux enfants de Manasseh (Manassé) : Nous discernons aujourd’hui que le SEIGNEUR est parmi nous, puisque vous n’avez pas commis cette infraction contre le SEIGNEUR ; maintenant vous avez délivré les enfants d’Israël de la main du SEIGNEUR.

 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.

32 ¶ Et Phinehas (Phinées) le fils d’Eleazar le prêtre, et les princes s’en retournèrent de chez les enfants de Reuben (Ruben), et de chez les enfants de Gad, du pays de Gilead (Galaad) du pays de Canaan, vers les enfants d’Israël, et leur ramenèrent la parole à nouveau.

 32 ¶ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

33 Et la chose plut aux enfants d’Israël, et les enfants d’Israël bénirent Dieu, et ils n’eurent plus l’intention d’aller se battre contre eux, pour détruire le pays dans lequel demeuraient les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) et les enfants de Gad.

 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

34 Et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) et les enfants de Gad appelèrent l’autel Ed : car il sera témoin entre nous que le SEIGNEUR est Dieu.

 34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.
