1 Or ce sont ici les nations que le SEIGNEUR laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, à savoir, tous ceux d’Israël qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan ;

 1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2 Et cela seulement afin que les générations des enfants d'Israël puissent connaître et apprendre ce qu’est la guerre, au moins ceux qui auparavant n'en avaient rien connu

 2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

3 C’est-à-dire cinq seigneurs des Philistins, et tous les Canaanites (Cananéens), et les Sidoniens et les Hivites qui demeuraient au mont Liban, depuis le mont Baalhermon jusqu'à l’entrée de Hamath ;

 3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

4 Et ils servaient à éprouver Israël, pour savoir s'ils écouteraient ou non les commandements du SEIGNEUR, qu'il avait commandés à leurs pères par la main de Moïse.

 4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 ¶ Et les enfants d'Israël demeurèrent parmi les Canaanites (Cananéens), , les Hittites (Héthiens), et les Amorites, et les Perizzites (Phérésiens), et les Hivites, et les Jebusites (Jébusiens).

 5 ¶ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

6 Et ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, et donnèrent leurs filles à leurs fils, et servirent leurs dieux.

 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7 Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal à la vue du SEIGNEUR, et ils oublièrent le SEIGNEUR leur Dieu, et servirent les Baalim et les bosquets .

 7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

8 ¶ C’est pourquoi le courroux du SEIGNEUR s'embrasa contre Israël, et il les vendit en la main de Chushanrishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d'Israël servirent Chushanrishathaim huit ans.

 8 ¶ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

9 Et lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent au SEIGNEUR, le SEIGNEUR suscita aux enfants d'Israël un libérateur qui les délivra, savoir Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb.

 9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

10 Et l’Esprit du SEIGNEUR fut sur lui, et il jugea Israël, et il partit pour la guerre, et le SEIGNEUR livra en sa main Chushanrishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main prévalut contre Chushanrishathaim.

 10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

11 Et le pays fut en repos quarante ans. Et Othniel, le fils de Kenaz, mourut.

 11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 ¶ Et les enfants d'Israël firent de nouveau ce qui est mal à la vue du SEIGNEUR, et le SEIGNEUR fortifia Eglon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui est mal à la vue du SEIGNEUR.

 12 ¶ And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

13 Et il Eglon assembla auprès de lui les enfants d'Ammon et Amalek, et il alla et frappa Israël ; et ils s’emparèrent de la ville des palmiers.

 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

14 Et les enfants d'Israël servirent Eglon, roi de Moab, dix-huit ans.

 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 Mais lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent au SEIGNEUR, le SEIGNEUR leur suscita un libérateur, Ehud, fils de Gera (Guéra), un Benjamite, un gaucher ; et les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Eglon, roi de Moab.

 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

16 Et Ehud se fit faire un poignard à deux tranchants, long d'une coudée, et il le ceignit sous ses vêtements, sur sa cuisse droite.

 16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

17 Et il apporta le présent à Eglon, roi de Moab ; or Eglon était un homme très gras.

 17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

18 Et lorsqu'il eut achevé d'offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui avaient apporté le présent.

 18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

19 Mais il revint lui-même des carrières, qui étaient près de Gilgal (Guilgal), et dit : J'ai pour toi un message secret, ô roi, qui dit : Silence. Et tous ceux qui étaient près de lui sortirent.

 19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

20 Et Ehud vint vers lui ; or il était assis dans un salon d’été, lequel il avait pour lui seul. Et Ehud dit : J'ai un message de la part de Dieu pour toi. Et il se leva de son siège ;

 20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

21 Et Ehud étendit sa main gauche, et prit le poignard de dessus sa cuisse droite, et l’enfonça dans son ventre ;

 21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

22 Et la poignée aussi entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma sur la lame, tellement qu’il ne pouvait pas retirer le poignard de son ventre, et Ies matières sortirent.

 22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

23 Puis Ehud sortit par le porche, et ferma sur lui les portes du salon, et mit le verrou.

 23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

24 Et quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs vinrent, et voici, lorsqu’ils virent que les portes du salon étaient verrouillées, ils dirent : Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans sa chambre d’été.

 24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

25 Et ils attendirent jusqu'à en être honteux ; et voici, il n'ouvrait pas les portes du salon ; c’est pourquoi ils prirent une clef et les ouvrirent, et voici, leur seigneur était étendu mort par terre.

 25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

26 Et Ehud s'échappa pendant qu'ils tardaient, et dépassa les carrières, et il se sauva à Seirath.

 26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

27 Et il arriva, quand il y fut entré, qu’il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Ephraim ; et les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et lui devant eux.

 27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

28 Et il leur dit : Suivez-moi, car le SEIGNEUR a livré vos ennemis, les Moabites, en votre main. Et ils descendirent après lui, et s’emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vers Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne.

 28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

29 Et à ce moment-là, ils tuèrent environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes et tous hommes vaillants, et il n’en échappa aucun.

 29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

30 Ainsi ce jour-là, Moab fut assujetti à la main d'Israël. Et le pays fut en repos quatre-vingts ans.

 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

31 ¶ Et après lui, il y eut Shamgar, fils d'Anath, qui tua six cents hommes Philistins, avec un aiguillon à bœufs ; et il délivra aussi Israël.

 31 ¶ And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
