1 Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal à la vue du SEIGNEUR ; et le SEIGNEUR les livra en la main de Midian (Madian) pendant sept ans.

 1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2 Et la main de Midian (Madian) prévalut contre Israël et à cause des Midianites (Madianites), les enfants d'Israël firent des repaires qui sont dans les montagnes, et les cavernes, et les lieux forts.

 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

3 Et il arrivait que quand Israël avait semé, les Midianites (Madianites) montaient, avec les Amalekites et les enfants de l’Est, et ils montaient contre eux.

 3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

4 Et ils campaient contre eux, et détruisaient les produits de la terre jusqu'à ce que tu viennes à Gaza, et ils ne laissaient aucune vivre pour Israël, ni mouton, ni bœuf, ni âne.

 4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

5 Car ils montaient, eux et leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, et ils venaient comme des sauterelles en multitude ; car eux et leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre ; et ils venaient dans le pays pour le ravager.

 5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

6 Et Israël fut très appauvri à cause des Midianites (Madianites) ; et les enfants d'Israël crièrent au SEIGNEUR.

 6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

7 ¶ Et il arriva que lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent au SEIGNEUR à cause des Midianites (Madianites),

 7 ¶ And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

8 Le SEIGNEUR envoya aux enfants d'Israël un prophète qui leur dit : Ainsi dit le SEIGNEUR Dieu d'Israël : Je vous ai fait monter d'Égypte, et je vous ai sortis de la maison de servitude,

 8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9 Et je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient, et je les ai chassés de devant vous, et je vous ai donné leur pays ;

 9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

10 Et je vous ai dit : Moi, je suis le SEIGNEUR votre Dieu ; ne craignez pas les dieux des Amorites, dans le pays desquels vous demeurez ; mais vous n'avez pas obéi à ma voix.

 10 And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

11 ¶ Et un ange du SEIGNEUR vint, et s'assit sous un chêne qui était à Ophrah, lequel appartenait à Joash, l’Abiezrite ; et son fils, Gideon (Gédéon), battait du blé dans le pressoir, pour le cacher des Midianites (Madianites).

 11 ¶ And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 Et l’ange du SEIGNEUR lui apparut, et lui dit : Le Seigneur est avec toi, toi puissant et vaillant homme.

 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 Et Gideon (Gédéon) lui dit : Oh mon seigneur, si le SEIGNEUR est avec nous, pourquoi donc toutes ces choses nous sont-elles arrivées ? Et où sont tous ses miracles que nos pères nous ont racontés, disant : Le SEIGNEUR ne nous a-t-il pas fait monter hors d'Égypte ? Mais maintenant le SEIGNEUR nous a abandonnés, et nous a livrés aux mains des Midianites (Madianites).

 13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 Et le SEIGNEUR le regarda, et dit : Va avec ta puissance, et tu sauveras Israël de la main des Midianites (Madianites) ; ne t'ai-je pas envoyé ?

 14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

15 Et il lui dit : Oh mon Seigneur, avec quoi sauverai-je Israël ? Voici, ma famille est pauvre en Manasseh (Manassé), et je suis le moindre dans la maison de mon père.

 15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

16 Et le SEIGNEUR lui dit : D’autant que je serai avec toi, et tu frapperas les Midianites (Madianites) comme un seul homme.

 16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

17 Et il lui dit : Si j'ai trouvé grâce à ta vue, alors montre-moi un signe que c'est toi qui parles avec moi.

 17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

18 Ne te retire pas d'ici, je te prie, jusqu'à ce que je vienne à toi, et que j'apporte mon présent et que je le dépose devant toi. Et il dit : J’attendrai jusqu'à ce que tu reviennes.

 18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

19 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon) entra, et prépara un chevreau et des pains sans levain d'un épha de farine ; il mit la chair dans un panier et mit le bouillon dans un pot, et les lui apporta sous le chêne, et les présenta.

 19 ¶ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

20 Et l’ange de Dieu lui dit : Prends la chair et les pains sans levain, et pose-les sur ce roc, et répands le bouillon. Et il fit ainsi.

 20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21 ¶ Alors l’ange du SEIGNEUR étendit le bout du bâton qu'il avait en sa main, et toucha la chair et les pains sans levain ; et le feu monta du roc et consuma la chair et les pains sans levain. Puis l’ange du SEIGNEUR s'en alla de devant ses yeux.

 21 ¶ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

22 Et lorsque Gideon (Gédéon) s’aperçut que c'était un ange du SEIGNEUR, Gideon (Gédéon) dit : Hélas, ô Seigneur DIEU ! C'est parce que j'ai vu un ange du SEIGNEUR face à face.

 22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.

23 Et le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Paix soit à toi ; ne crains pas, tu ne mourras pas.

 23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

24 Et Gideon (Gédéon) bâtit là un autel au SEIGNEUR, et l’appela Jehovahshalom jusqu'à ce jour il est encore à Ophrah des Abiezrites.

 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25 ¶ Et il arriva, cette nuit-là, que le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Prends le jeune taurillon de ton père savoir le second taurillon de sept ans ; et renverse l’autel de Baal qui est à ton père, et coupe le bosquet qui est à côté ;

 25 ¶ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

26 Et bâtis un autel au SEIGNEUR ton Dieu, sur le sommet de ce roc, au lieu convenable, et tu prendras le second taurillon, et tu offriras un sacrifice consumé avec le bois du bosquet que tu auras coupé.

 26 And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

27 Puis Gideon (Gédéon) prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs, et fit comme le SEIGNEUR lui avait dit et il en fut ainsi, parce qu’il craignait la maison de son père et les hommes de la ville s’il le faisait de jour, alors il le fit de nuit.

 27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28 ¶ Et quand les hommes de la ville se levèrent de bonne heure le matin, voici, l’autel de Baal était démoli, et le bosquet qui était à côté était coupé, et le second taurillon était offert sur l’autel qui avait été bâti.

 28 ¶ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

29 Et ils se dirent l’un à l’autre : Qui a fait pareille chose ? Et ils s'enquirent et demandèrent, on leur dit : Gideon (Gédéon), le fils de Joash, a fait cette chose.

 29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

30 Alors les hommes de la ville dirent à Joash : Fais sortir ton fils, afin qu'il meure ; car il a démoli l’autel de Baal et a coupé le bosquet qui était auprès.

 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

31 Et Joash dit à tous ceux qui se tenaient face à lui : Plaiderez-vous pour Baal ? Est-ce vous qui le sauverez ? Celui qui plaidera pour lui, qu'il soit mis à mort, d’ici au matin ; s’il est un dieu, qu'il plaide pour lui-même, puisqu’on a démoli son autel.

 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

32 C’est pourquoi en ce jour-là, il Gideon (Gédéon), appela Jerubbaal, en disant : Que Baal plaide contre lui, car il a démoli son autel.

 32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

33 ¶ Alors tous les Midianites (Madianites), et les Amalekites, et les enfants de l’Est, se réunirent ensemble et passèrent (le Jourdain), et campèrent dans la vallée de Jezreel (Jizreël).

 33 ¶ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

34 Mais l’Esprit du SEIGNEUR vint sur Gideon (Gédéon), et il sonna de la trompette, et les Abiezrites s’assemblèrent à sa suite.

 34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.

35 Et il envoya des messagers dans tout Manasseh (Manassé) qui s’assembla aussi à sa suite ; et il envoya des messagers à Asher (Asser), et à Zebulon, et à Naphtali (Nephtali) ; et ils montèrent à leur rencontre.

 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 ¶ Et Gideon (Gédéon) dit à Dieu : Si tu veux sauver Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit,

 36 ¶ And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

37 Voici, je vais mettre une toison de laine dans l’aire et si la rosée est sur la toison seule, et que le sec soit sur toute la terre, alors je saurai que tu sauveras Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit.

 37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

38 Et il en fut ainsi car il se leva de bonne heure le lendemain, et il pressa la toison et en essora la rosée de la toison, un bol plein d'eau.

 38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39 Et Gideon (Gédéon) dit à Dieu : Que ton courroux ne s'embrase pas contre moi, et je parlerai seulement une fois. Laisse-moi, je te prie, faire une seule épreuve avec la toison ; que la toison seule reste sèche, et que sur tout le sol il y ait de la rosée.

 39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40 Et Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là et la toison seule fut sèche, et la rosée recouvrait tout le sol.

 40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
