1 Puis Jerubbaal, qui est Gideon (Gédéon), et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, se levèrent de bonne heure, et campèrent près du puits de Harod ; si bien que l’armée des Midianites (Madianites) était au Nord de Gideon (Gédéon), du côté de la colline de Moreh, dans la vallée.

 1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

2 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Gideon (Gédéon) : Le peuple qui est avec toi est trop nombreux, pour que je livre les Midianites (Madianites) en leurs mains, de peur qu’Israël ne s’en vante contre moi, disant : Ma propre main m'a sauvé.

 2 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

3 Maintenant donc va et proclame aux oreilles du peuple, disant : Quiconque est craintif et peureux, s'en retourne et s'éloigne du mont Gilead (Galaad). Et vingt-deux mille hommes du peuple s'en retournèrent ; et il en resta dix mille.

 3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

4 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Gideon (Gédéon) : Le peuple est encore trop nombreux ; fais-les descendre vers l’eau, et là, je les mettrai à l’épreuve pour toi ; et il arrivera que celui dont je te dirai : Celui-ci ira avec toi, celui-là ira avec toi ; et celui dont je te dirai : Celui-ci n'ira pas avec toi, celui-là n'ira pas.

 4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

5 Et il fit descendre le peuple vers l’eau. Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Gideon (Gédéon) : Quiconque lapera l’eau avec sa langue, comme lape le chien, tu le mettras à part, de même tu mettras à part tous ceux qui se courberont sur leurs genoux pour boire.

 5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

6 Et le nombre de ceux qui lapèrent en portant leur main à leur bouche, fut de trois cents hommes ; mais tout le reste du peuple se courba sur ses genoux pour boire l’eau.

 6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

7 Et le SEIGNEUR dit à Gideon (Gédéon) : Par les trois cents hommes qui ont lapé (l’eau) je vous sauverai, et je livrerai les Midianites (Madianites) en ta main ; et que tout le reste du peuple s'en aille, chacun chez soi.

 7 And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

8 Ainsi le peuple prit en sa main les vivres et leurs trompettes et Gideon (Gédéon) renvoya tout le reste d'Israël, chaque homme à sa tente, et retint les trois cents hommes. Or l’armée de Midian (Madian) était au-dessous de lui, dans la vallée.

 8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

9 ¶ Et il arriva, cette nuit-là, que le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Lève-toi ; descends vers l’armée, car je l’ai livrée en ta main ;

 9 ¶ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.

10 Mais si tu crains d'y descendre, descends avec Phurah, ton serviteur vers l’armée,

 10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:

11 Et tu entendras ce qu'ils disent, et ensuite tes mains seront fortifiées pour descendre vers l’armée. Il descendit donc avec Phurah, son serviteur, aux avant-postes des hommes armés qui étaient dans le camp.

 11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.

12 Et les Midianites (Madianites) et les Amalekites et tous les enfants de l’Est étaient étendus dans la vallée, comme une multitude de sauterelles ; et leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre, en multitude comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer.

 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

13 Et lorsque Gideon (Gédéon) arriva, voici, il y avait un homme qui racontait un rêve à son compagnon ; et disait : Voici, j'ai eu un rêve, et voici, un gâteau de pain d'orge roulait dans le camp de Midian (Madian), et il arriva jusqu'à une tente et la heurta si bien qu’elle tomba ; et il la retourna sens dessus dessous, et la tente était renversée.

 13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.

14 Et son compagnon répondit et dit : Cela n'est pas autre chose que l’épée de Gideon (Gédéon) le fils de Joash, un homme d'Israël car Dieu a livré Midian (Madian) et tout l’armée en sa main.

 14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.

15 ¶ Et il arriva que lorsque Gideon (Gédéon) entendit le récit du rêve et son interprétation, il adora, et retourna vers l’armée d'Israël, et dit : Levez-vous, car le SEIGNEUR a livré l’armée de Midian (Madian) en votre main.

 15 ¶ And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

16 Et il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois compagnies, et il mit une trompette dans la main de chaque homme, et des cruches vides, et des lampes dans les cruches.

 16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

17 Et il leur dit : Regardez-moi, et faites de même ; et voici, quand j'arriverai à l’extérieur du camp, il faudra faire ce que je ferai.

 17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

18 Quand je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi, alors vous aussi vous sonnerez des trompettes tout autour de tout le camp et vous direz : L’épée du SEIGNEUR et de Gideon (Gédéon).

 18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

19 ¶ Gideon (Gédéon) donc et les cent hommes qui étaient avec lui arrivèrent à l’extrémité du camp, au commencement de la veille du milieu de la nuit ; on venait seulement de placer les gardes, et ils sonnèrent des trompettes, et brisèrent les cruches qu'ils avaient en leurs mains ;

 19 ¶ So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

20 Et les trois compagnies sonnèrent des trompettes, et brisèrent les cruches, et tenaient dans leur main gauche les lampes, et dans leur main droite les trompettes pour sonner, et criaient : L’épée du SEIGNEUR et de Gideon (Gédéon).

 20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

21 Et ils se tenaient chaque homme à sa place autour du camp ; et toute l’armée se mit à courir, et à pousser des cris, et à fuir.

 21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

22 Et les trois cents sonnaient des trompettes, et le SEIGNEUR tourna l’épée de chacun contre son compagnon, à travers toute l’armée. Et l’armée s'enfuit jusqu'à Bethshittah, vers Zererath, et jusqu'à la frontière d'Abelmeholah, vers Tabbath.

 22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.

23 Et les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent, de Naphtali (Nephtali), et d'Asher (Asser), et de tout Manasseh (Manassé), et poursuivirent les Midianites (Madianites).

 23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.

24 ¶Et Gideon (Gédéon) envoya des messagers dans tout le mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), disant : Descendez à la rencontre des Midianites (Madianites), et prenez les eaux les premiers jusqu'à Bethbarah, et le Jourdain. Alors tous les hommes d'Ephraim (Éphraïm) se rassemblèrent, et se saisirent des eaux jusqu’à Bethbarah, et du Jourdain.

 24 ¶ And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.

25 Et ils prirent deux princes des Midianites (Madianites), Oreb et Zeeb ; et ils tuèrent Oreb au roc d'Oreb, et ils tuèrent Zeeb au pressoir de Zeeb, et ils poursuivirent Midian (Madian), et apportèrent les têtes d'Oreb et de Zeeb, à Gideon (Gédéon), de l’autre côté du Jourdain.

 25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.
