1 Alors tous les enfants d'Israël sortirent, et la congrégation se réunit comme un seul homme, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beersheba, ainsi que le pays de Gilead (Galaad) ; devant le SEIGNEUR, à Mizpeh.

 1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.

2 Et le chef de tout le peuple, à savoir, de toutes les tribus d'Israël, se présentèrent dans l’assemblée du peuple de Dieu, quatre cent mille fantassins, qui tiraient l'épée.

 2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

3 (Or les enfants de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mizpeh. Alors les enfants d'Israël dirent : Dites-nous, comment cette infamie est-elle arrivée ?

 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

4 Et le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, répondit et dit : J'étais venu à Gibeah, qui appartient à Benjamin, moi et ma concubine, pour y passer la nuit.

 4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

5 Et les hommes de Gibeah se levèrent contre moi, et encerclèrent de nuit la maison où j’étais, et voulaient me tuer, et ils ont tellement violé ma concubine, qu’elle en est morte.

 5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

6 Et j'ai pris ma concubine et je l'ai mise en pièces, et l'ai envoyée dans tout le territoire de l'héritage d'Israël ; car ils ont commis une impudicité et une infamie en Israël.

 6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

7 Voici, vous êtes tous enfants d'Israël, donnez ici votre avis et conseil.

 7 Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

8 ¶ Et tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme, disant : Aucun de nous n'ira à sa tente, et aucun de nous ne se retirera dans sa maison.

 8 ¶ And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

9 Mais maintenant, ceci sera la chose que nous ferons à Gibeah nous procéderons contre elle par lot ;

 9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

10 Et nous prendrons dix hommes sur cent de toutes les tribus d'Israël, et cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille, ils prendront des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu’ils puissent, étant arrivés à Gibeah de Benjamin, faire selon toute l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël.

 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

11 Ainsi tous les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent contre la ville, intriqués comme un seul homme.

 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

12 ¶ Et les tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des hommes à travers toute la tribu de Benjamin, disant : Qu’est-ce que cette infamie qui est arrivée parmi vous ?

 12 ¶ And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

13 Maintenant donc, livrez-nous ces hommes, les enfants de Bélial, qui sont à Gibeah, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d'Israël. Mais les enfants de Benjamin ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël ;

 13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:

14 Et les enfants de Benjamin sortirent de leurs villes et se rassemblèrent à Gibeah, pour aller se battre contre les enfants d'Israël.

 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

15 Et les enfants de Benjamin sortis de leurs villes furent dénombrés, en ce jour-là vingt-six mille hommes qui tiraient l'épée, sans compter les habitants de Gibeah, qui furent dénombrés sept cents hommes d'élite.

 15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

16 Parmi tout ce peuple, il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite gauchers ; tous ceux-là pouvaient lancer une pierre avec la fronde, à un cheveu près, et ne pas manquer.

 16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

17 Et les hommes d'Israël furent dénombrés, excepté ceux de Benjamin quatre cent mille hommes qui tiraient l'épée, tous étaient hommes de guerre.

 17 And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

18 ¶ Et les enfants d'Israël se levèrent, et montèrent à la maison de Dieu, et demandèrent `conseil à Dieu, et dirent : Qui de nous montera le premier pour se battre contre les enfants de Benjamin ? Et le SEIGNEUR dit : Judah (Juda), montera le premier.

 18 ¶ And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

19 Et les enfants d'Israël se levèrent le matin, et campèrent contre Gibeah.

 19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

20 Et les hommes d'Israël allèrent se battre contre Benjamin, et les hommes d'Israël se rangèrent pour se battre contre eux devant Gibeah.

 20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

21 Et les enfants de Benjamin sortirent de Gibeah, et ce jour-là, ils mirent par terre vingt-deux mille hommes d'Israël.

 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

22 Et le peuple, les hommes d'Israël, reprirent courage, et se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s'étaient rangés le premier jour.

 22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

23 (Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent, et pleurèrent devant le SEIGNEUR jusqu'au soir, et ils demandèrent conseil au SEIGNEUR, disant : Continuerai-je d’approcher pour livrer bataille aux enfants de Benjamin, mon frère ? Et le SEIGNEUR dit : Montez contre lui).

 23 (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

24 Et les enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent contre les enfants de Benjamin, le second jour.

 24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

25 Et Benjamin sortit contre eux de Gibeah, le second jour ; et de nouveau ils étendirent par terre dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tiraient l'épée.

 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

26 ¶ Alors tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à la maison de Dieu, et pleurèrent et s’assirent là devant le SEIGNEUR, et jeûnèrent ce jour-là jusqu'au soir ; et ils offrirent des offrandes consumées et des offrandes de paix devant le SEIGNEUR.

 26 ¶ Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

27 Et les enfants d'Israël interrogèrent le SEIGNEUR, (car l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu était là, en ces jours ;

 27 And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

28 Et Phinehas, fils d'Eleazar, fils d'Aaron, se ten ait devant elle, en ces jours-là), disant : Sortirai-je encore une fois pour livrer bataille aux enfants de Benjamin, mon frère, ou cesserai-je ? Et le SEIGNEUR Montez, car demain je les livrerai en ta main.

 28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

29 Et Israël plaça des hommes en embuscade autour de Gibeah.

 29 And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.

30 Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent, le troisième jour, contre les enfants de Benjamin ; et ils se rangèrent contre Gibeah, comme les autres fois.

 30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

31 Et les enfants de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, et furent attirés loin de la ville, et ils commencèrent à en frapper quelques-uns, qui furent tués comme les autres fois, environ trente hommes d'Israël, sur les grandes routes, dont l'une monte à la maison de Dieu, et l'autre à Gibeah dans la campagne.

 31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

32 Et les enfants de Benjamin dirent : Ils sont frappés devant nous comme la première fois. Mais les enfants d'Israël dirent : Fuyons, et attirons-les loin de la ville, sur les grandes routes.

 32 And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

33 Et tous les hommes d'Israël se levèrent de leur lieu, et se rangèrent à Baaltamar ; et ceux de l'embuscade d'Israël sortirent de leur lieu, savoir des prairies de Gibeah.

 33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

34 Et dix mille hommes d'élite de tout Israël vinrent contre Gibeah, et la bataille fut rude ; mais ceux de Benjamin ne savaient pas que le mal était proche d’eux.

 34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

35 Et le SEIGNEUR frappa Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent ce jour-là vingt-cinq mille cent hommes des Benjamites, tous ceux-là tiraient l'épée.

 35 And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

36 Alors les enfants de Benjamin virent qu'ils étaient battus or les hommes d'Israël avaient fait place aux Benjamites, parce qu’ils comptaient sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée près de Gibeah.

 36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

37 Et les hommes en embuscade se hâtèrent, et se jetèrent sur Gibeah ; et l'embuscade se porta en avant, et frappa toute la ville par le tranchant de l'épée.

 37 And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

38 Or il y avait un signal donné entre les hommes d'Israël et l'embuscade, qu’ils devaient faire monter de la ville une grande flamme avec de la fumée.

 38 Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

39 Et lorsque les hommes d'Israël s’étaient détournés de la bataille, Benjamin avait commencé de frapper à mort une trentaine de personnes parmi les hommes d'Israël, car ils disaient : Certainement ils tombent frappés devant nous comme dans la première bataille.

 39 And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

40 Mais quand la flamme commença à monter de la ville comme une colonne de fumée, les Benjamites regardèrent derrière eux, et voici, la flamme de la ville montait vers le ciel.

 40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

41 Et lorsque les hommes d'Israël se tournèrent de nouveau, les hommes de Benjamin furent étonnés ; car ils virent que le mal les avait atteints.

 41 And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

42 Alors ils tournèrent leurs dos devant les hommes d'Israël vers le chemin du désert, mais la bataille les rattrapa. Et ceux qui sortirent des villes les détruisirent au milieu d’eux.

 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

43 Ainsi ils encerclèrent les Benjamites, et les poursuivirent, et les piétinèrent sans difficulté, jusqu’en face de Gibeah, vers le soleil levant.

 43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

44 Et il tomba de Benjamin dix-huit mille hommes, tous étaient hommes vaillants.

 44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

45 Et ils firent volte-face, et s'enfuirent vers le désert, au roc de Rimmon ; et ils en grappillèrent sur les grandes routes cinq mille hommes, et les pourchassèrent avec ardeur jusqu'à Gidom, et en tuèrent deux mille hommes.

 45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

46 Si bien que tous ceux de Benjamin qui tombèrent en ce jour-là furent vingt-cinq mille hommes qui tiraient l'épée, tous étaient hommes vaillants.

 46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

47 Mais six cents hommes firent volte-face et s'enfuirent au désert, vers le roc Rimmon, et ils demeurèrent au roc Rimmon quatre mois.

 47 But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

48 Et les hommes d'Israël retournèrent à nouveau vers les enfants de Benjamin et les frappèrent par le tranchant de l'épée, ainsi que tous les hommes de chaque ville, et les bêtes, et tout ce qui leur tomba sous la main. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qu’ils traversèrent.

 48 And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
