1 Or les hommes d'Israël avaient juré à Mizpeh, disant : Nul de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à Benjamin.

 1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

2 Et le peuple vint à la maison de Dieu, et ils demeurèrent là jusqu'au soir devant Dieu ; et ils élevèrent leur voix et pleurèrent grandement,

 2 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;

3 Et dirent : Ô SEIGNEUR Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi ceci est-il arrivé en Israël, qu'il manque aujourd'hui à Israël une tribu ?

 3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?

4 Et il arriva le lendemain, que le peuple se leva de bonne heure et bâtit là un autel ; et ils offrirent des offrandes consumées et des offrandes de paix.

 4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5 Et les enfants d'Israël dirent : Qui est celui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël qui n'est pas monté avec la congrégation vers le SEIGNEUR ? Car on avait fait un grand serment contre celui qui ne monterait pas vers le SEIGNEUR, à Mizpeh, disant il sera certainement mis à mort.

 5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

6 Et les enfants d'Israël se repentirent à l'égard de Benjamin, leur frère, et dirent Une tribu a été aujourd'hui retranchée d'Israël.

 6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

7 Comment ferons-nous pour donner des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque nous avons juré par le SEIGNEUR de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes ?

 7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

8 ¶ vEt ils dirent : Y a-t-il quelqu'un d'entre les tribus d'Israël qui ne soit pas monté vers le SEIGNEUR à Mizpeh ? Et voici, aucun homme de n'était venu au camp, à l’assemblée.

 8 ¶ And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly.

9 Car le peuple fut dénombré et voici, il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabeshgilead.

 9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there.

10 Et la congrégation y envoya douze mille hommes des plus vaillants, et on leur commanda, disant : Allez, et frappez les habitants de Jabeshgilead par le tranchant de l'épée, ainsi que les femmes et les enfants.

 10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.

11 Et voici la chose que vous ferez vous exterminerez entièrement tout mâle, ainsi que toute femme qui a couché avec un homme.

 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

12 Et ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabeshgilead quatre cents jeunes filles vierges qui n'avaient pas connu d'homme en couchant avec lui ; et ils les amenèrent au camp, à Shiloh (Silo), qui est dans le pays de Canaan.

 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13 Et toute la congrégation envoya quelques-uns parler aux enfants de Benjamin, qui étaient au roc Rimmon, pour les convoquer calmement.

 13 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.

14 Et Benjamin revint en ce temps-là, et on leur donna pour femmes celles qu'on avait laissé vivre d'entre les femmes de Jabeshgilead ; mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux.

 14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

15 Et le peuple se repentait au sujet de Benjamin, parce que le SEIGNEUR avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d'Israël.

 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16 ¶ Et les anciens de la congrégation dirent : Comment ferons-nous pour donner des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été détruites ?

 16 ¶ Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

17 Et ils dirent : Il faut que ceux qui se sont échappés de Benjamin aient une possession, afin qu'une tribu ne soit pas détruite d'Israël.

 17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

18 Cependant, nous ne pouvons pas leur donner des femmes d'entre nos filles ; car les enfants d'Israël ont juré, disant : Maudit soit celui qui donne une femme à Benjamin.

 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

19 Et ils dirent : Voici, il y a tous les ans une fête au SEIGNEUR à Shiloh (Silo), en un lieu qui est au nord de Bethel, sur le côté est de la grande route qui monte de Bethel à Shechem (Sichem), et au Sud de Lebonah.

 19 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

20 C’est pourquoi ils commandèrent aux enfants de Benjamin, disant : Allez, et mettez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes.

 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

21 Et voyez, et voici, si les filles de Shiloh (Silo) sortent pour danser, alors sortez des vignes et que chaque homme attrape parmi les filles de Shiloh (Silo) sa femme, et allez au pays de Benjamin.

 21 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

22 Et s’il arrive, quand leurs pères ou leurs frères viendront vers nous se plaindre, nous leur dirons : Soyez cléments envers eux à cause de nous, parce que nous n'avons pas retenu de femme pour chaque homme dans la guerre ; car vous ne leur en avez pas donné à ce moment là, en ce cas vous seriez coupables.

 22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.

23 Et les enfants de Benjamin firent ainsi, et enlevèrent des femmes selon leur nombre, parmi celles qui dansaient, lesquelles ils s'emparèrent ; et ils s'en allèrent et retournèrent dans leur héritage, et rebâtirent les villes et y demeurèrent.

 23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.

24 Et les enfants d'Israël s'en allèrent de là, en ce temps-là, chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille ; et ils partirent de là chacun à son héritage.

 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

25 En ces jours-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël ; chacun faisait ce qui était droit à ses propres yeux.

 25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
