1 Or il arriva, aux jours où les juges gouvernaient, qu’il y eut une famine dans le pays. Et un certain homme de Bethlehemjudah s’en alla pour séjourner dans la contrée de Moab, lui, sa femme, et ses deux fils.

 1 Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

2 Et le nom de cet homme était Elimelech, et le nom de sa femme Naomi (Noémie), et les noms de ses deux fils Mahlon et Chilion (Kilion) : Ephrathites, de Bethlehemjudah. Et ils vinrent dans la contrée de Moab, et ils s’y établirent.

 2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

3 Et Elimelech, mari de Naomi (Noémie), mourut, et elle resta avec ses deux fils.

 3 And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

4 Et ils prirent pour eux des femmes de Moab, le nom de l’une était Orpah (Orpa), et le nom de l’autre Ruth ; et ils demeurèrent là environ dix ans.

 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

5 Et Mahlon et Chilion (Kilion) moururent eux deux aussi, et la femme resta privée de ses deux fils et de son mari.

 5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

6 ¶ Alors elle se leva avec ses belles-filles, afin qu’elle puisse revenir de la contrée de Moab ; car elle apprit dans la contrée de Moab comment le SEIGNEUR avait visité son peuple, en leur donnant du pain.

 6 ¶ Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.

7 C’est pourquoi elle sortit du lieu où elle était, et ses deux belles-filles avec elle ; et elles se mirent en chemin pour revenir au pays de Judah (Juda).

 7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

8 Et Naomi (Noémie) dit à ses deux belles-filles : Allez, retournez chacune dans la maison de sa mère ; que le SEIGNEUR agisse avec bonté envers vous, comme vous avez agi envers les morts, et envers moi.

 8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

9 Que le SEIGNEUR fasse que vous puissiez trouver du repos, chacune de vous dans la maison de son mari. Puis elle les embrassa ; et elles élevèrent leur voix et pleurèrent.

 9 The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

10 Et elles lui dirent : Assurément nous retournerons avec toi vers ton peuple.

 10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

11 Et Naomi (Noémie) dit : Retournez, mes filles ; pourquoi viendriez-vous avec moi ? Y-a-t- il d’autres fils dans mon utérus qui puissent devenir vos maris ?

 11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

12 Retournez, mes filles, allez votre chemin ; car je suis trop âgée pour avoir un mari. Quand je dirais, j’ai l’espoir, quand cette nuit même j’aurais un mari et que j’enfanterais des fils,

 12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;

13 Les attendriez-vous jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient grands ? Resteriez-vous sans avoir un mari ? Non, mes filles ; car à cause de vous, cela m’attriste beaucoup, parce que la main du SEIGNEUR s’est déployée contre moi.

 13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.

14 Alors elles élevèrent leur voix et pleurèrent encore ; et Orpah (Orpa) embrassa sa belle-mère ; mais Ruth s’attacha à elle.

 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

15 Et elle Naomi (Noémie) dit : Voici, ta belle-sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers ses dieux ; retourne-toi aussi après ta belle-sœur.

 15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

16 Mais Ruth dit : Ne me prie pas de te laisser, ou de ne pas te suivre ; car où tu iras j’irai, et où tu logeras je logerai ; ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu ;

 16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

17 Où tu mourras, je mourrai, et j’y serai enterrée ; Ainsi me fasse le SEIGNEUR, et plus aussi , si autre que la mort fait séparation entre toi et moi.

 17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

18 Quand elle Naomi (Noémie) vit qu’elle était résolue d’aller avec elle, elle cessa alors de lui en parler.

 18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

19 ¶ Ainsi elles allèrent toutes deux jusqu’à ce qu’elles arrivent à Bethlehem (Bethléhem). Et il arriva comme elles entraient dans Bethlehem, que toute la ville s’émut à leur sujet, et on disait : Est-ce Naomi (Noémie) ?

 19 ¶ So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

20 Et elle leur dit : Ne m’appelez pas Naomi (Noémie), appelez-moi Marah (Mara) : car le Tout-Puissant m’a rempli de beaucoup d’amertume.

 20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

21 Je suis partie pleine de biens, et le SEIGNEUR me ramène à vide. Pourquoi alors m’appelleriez-vous Naomi (Noémie), puisque le SEIGNEUR a témoigné contre moi, et que le Tout-Puissant m’a affligée ?

 21 I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

22 Ainsi Naomi (Noémie) revint avec Ruth, la Moabite, sa belle-fille, qui était venue de la contrée de Moab ; et elles arrivèrent à Bethlehem (Bethléhem), au commencement de la moisson des orges.

 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
