1 À cette époque-là, Hérode le tétrarque entendit parler de la renommée de Jésus,

 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

2 Et dit à ses serviteurs: C’est Jean le Baptiste; il est ressuscité d’entre les morts; et par conséquent des œuvres puissantes se manifestent en lui.

 2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

3 ¶ Car Hérode avait fait saisir Jean, et l’avait fait lier et l’avait fait mettre en prison au sujet d’Hérodias, femme de son frère Philippe.

 3 ¶ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.

4 Car Jean lui avait dit, Il n’est pas permis pour toi de l’avoir.

 4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5 Et alors qu'il aurait bien voulu le faire mourir, il craignait la multitude, parce qu’ils le considéraient comme un prophète.

 5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

6 Mais alors qu’on célébrait l’anniversaire d’Hérode, la fille d’Hérodias dansa devant eux et plut à Hérode.

 6 But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

7 Sur quoi il lui promit avec serment de lui donner tout ce qu’elle demanderait.

 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

8 Et elle, instruite par sa mère, dit: Donne-moi ici, la tête de Jean Baptiste dans un plat.

 8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.

9 Et le roi fut désolé: néanmoins, à cause du serment, et de ceux qui étaient assis à table avec lui, il commanda qu’on la lui donnât.

 9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10 Et il envoya, et fit décapiter Jean dans la prison.

 10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11 Et sa tête fut apportée dans un plat, et donnée à la jeune fille: et elle la porta à sa mère.

 11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

12 Et ses disciples vinrent, et emportèrent le corps, et l’enterrèrent, et ils allèrent et le racontèrent à Jésus.

 12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13 ¶ Lorsque Jésus l’apprit, il partit de là par bateau en un lieu désert, à part: et quand le peuple l’apprit, ils le suivirent à pied hors des villes.

 13 ¶ When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14 Et Jésus débarqua, et vit une grande multitude, et fut ému de compassion envers eux, et guérit leurs malades.

 14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15 ¶ Et comme c’était le soir, ses disciples vinrent à lui, disant: C’est un lieu désert, et l’heure est déjà passée; renvoie la multitude, afin qu’ils puissent aller dans les villages, et qu’ils s’achètent des victuailles.

 15 ¶ And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16 Mais Jésus leur dit: Ils n’ont pas besoin de partir; donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger.

 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17 Et ils lui dirent: Nous n’avons ici que cinq pains, et deux poissons.

 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18 Et il dit: Apportez-les-moi ici.

 18 He said, Bring them hither to me.

19 Et il commanda à la multitude de s’asseoir sur l’herbe, et prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et regardant vers le ciel, il bénit, et rompit les pains, et les donna à ses disciples et les disciples à la multitude.

 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20 Et ils mangèrent tous et furent rassasiés: et ils emportèrent des morceaux qui restèrent, douze paniers pleins.

 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21 Et ceux qui avaient mangé étaient environ cinq mille hommes, plus les femmes et les enfants.

 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22 ¶ Et aussitôt Jésus obligea ses disciples à monter dans un bateau, et à passer avant lui vers l’autre côté, pendant qu’il renverrait les multitudes.

 22 ¶ And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 Et quand il eut renvoyé les multitudes, il monta sur une montagne, à part pour prier: et quand le soir fut venu, il était là seul.

 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 Or le bateau était déjà au milieu de la mer, ballotté par les vagues: car le vent était contraire.

 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 Et à la quatrième veille de la nuit, Jésus alla vers eux, marchant sur la mer.

 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 Et quand les disciples le virent marchant sur la mer, ils furent troublés, disant: C’est un esprit; et ils crièrent de peur.

 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 Mais aussitôt Jésus leur parla, disant: soyez plein d’arderur, c’est moi; n’ayez pas peur.

 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 Et Pierre lui répondit et dit: Seigneur, si c’est toi, ordonne-moi d’aller jusqu’à toi sur l’eau.

 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 Et il dit: Viens. Et quand Pierre descendit du bateau, il marcha sur l’eau, pour aller à Jésus.

 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 Mais quand il vit le vent violent, il eut peur; et commençant à s’enfoncer, il s’écria, disant: Seigneur, sauve-moi.

 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 Et immédiatement Jésus étendit sa main, et l’attrapa, et lui dit: Ô toi de petite foi, pourquoi as-tu douté?

 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 Et quand ils furent entrés dans le bateau, le vent cessa.

 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Alors ceux qui étaient dans le bateau vinrent et l’adorèrent, disant: Véritablement tu es le Fils de Dieu.

 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34 ¶ Et lorsqu’ils eurent traversé, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésareth.

 34 ¶ And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35 Et quand les hommes de ce lieu apprirent qu'il était là, ils le firent savoir dans toute la province d’alentour, et lui apportèrent tous les malades;

 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36 Et le supplièrent afin qu’ils puissent seulement toucher le bord de son vêtement:et tous ceux qui le touchèrent furent rendus parfaitement bien portants.

 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
