1 Mais il arriva  lorsque Sanballat apprit que nous bâtissions la muraille, qu’il se courrouça et fut fort indigné ; et il se moqua des Juifs,

 1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2 Et il parla devant ses frères et devant l’armée de Samarie, et dit : Que font ces faibles Juifs ? Se relèveront-ils ? Sacrifieront-ils ? Achèveront-ils en un jour ? Feront-ils revivre les pierres des monceaux de décombres puisqu’elles sont brûlées ?

 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

3 Or Tobiah (Tobija), l’Ammonite était auprès de lui, et il dit : Quoi qu’ils bâtissent, si un renard montait, il démolirait leur muraille de pierres.

 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

4 Entends, ô notre Dieu, car nous sommes méprisés, et fais retourner leur outrage sur leur propre tête, et donne-les en proie dans un pays de captivité ;

 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

5 Et ne couvre pas leur iniquité, et que leur péché ne soit pas effacé devant toi ; car ils t’ont provoqué à la colère face à ceux qui bâtissent.

 5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

6 Ainsi nous avons rebâtis la muraille, et toute la muraille fut jointe jusqu’à sa moitié ; car le peuple avait dans la tête de travailler.

 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

7 ¶ Mais il arriva, lorsque Sanballat, et Tobiah, et les Arabes, et les Ammonites et les Ashdodites (Asdodiens), apprirent que les murs de Jérusalem étaient complétés, et que les brèches commençaient à se fermer, qu'ils furent fort courroucés.

 7 ¶ But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8 Et ils conspirèrent tous ensemble pour venir se battre contre Jérusalem, et pour l’empêcher dans son dessein.

 8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

9 Néanmoins nous avons prié à notre Dieu, et placé une garde contre eux, de jour et de nuit, à cause d’eux.

 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10 Et Juda disait : La vigueur des porteurs de fardeaux décline, et il y a beaucoup de décombres ; en sorte que nous ne pouvons pas bâtir la muraille.

 10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

11 Et nos adversaires disaient : Ils ne sauront pas et ne verrons pas non plus, jusqu’à ce que nous arrivions parmi eux, et nous les tuerons, et nous ferons cesser l’ouvrage.

 11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

12 Et il arriva  lorsque les Juifs qui demeuraient près d’eux, arrivèrent, qu'ils nous dirent par dix fois : De tous les endroits par lesquels vous retournez vers nous, ils seront sur vous.

 12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

13 ¶ C’est pourquoi je plaçai depuis la partie inférieure, derrière la muraille, et sur les éminences, je plaçai, dis-je, le peuple, par familles, avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.

 13 ¶ Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 Et je regardai et me levai, et je dis aux notables, aux dirigeants, et au reste du peuple : N’ayez pas peur d’eux ; souvenez-vous du Seigneur, qui est grand et terrible, et combattez pour vos frères, vos fils et vos filles, vos femmes et vos maisons.

 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15 Et il arriva, quand nos ennemis apprirent que nous avions été avertis, et que Dieu avait fait échouer leur conseil, que nous sommes tous retournés à la muraille, chacun à son travail.

 15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16 Et il arriva que depuis ce jour-là une moitié de mes serviteurs œuvrait à l’ouvrage et l’autre moitié était armée de lances, de boucliers, d’arcs et de haubergeons ; et les dirigeants étaient derrière toute la maison de Judah.

 16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 Ceux qui bâtissaient la muraille, et ceux qui portaient les fardeaux, ainsi que ceux qui les chargeaient, chacun travaillait à l’ouvrage d’une main, et de l’autre main, tenait une arme.

 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 Car ceux qui bâtissaient avaient chacun son épée ceinte sur son côté, ainsi ils bâtissaient. Et celui qui sonnait de la trompette était près de moi.

 18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19 ¶ Et je dis : aux notables, et aux dirigeants, et au reste du peuple : L’ouvrage est grand et étendu, et nous sommes dispersés sur la muraille, loin l’un de l’autre ;

 19 ¶ And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20 En quelque lieu donc que vous entendiez le son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous vers nous ; notre Dieu combattra pour nous.

 20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

21 Ainsi nous travaillions à l’ouvrage ; et la moitié d’entre eux tenait des lances depuis le point du jour, jusqu’à ce que les étoiles paraissent.

 21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

22 De même en ce temps-là je dis aussi au peuple : Que chacun passe la nuit dans Jérusalem, avec son serviteur, afin que de nuit ils puissent être notre garde, et travailler le jour.

 22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

23 Et ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes serviteurs, ni les hommes de la garde qui me suivaient, ne quittèrent nos vêtements, sauf que chacun les retirait pour le bain.

 23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
