1 Et il y eut un grand cri du peuple et de leurs femmes contre les Juifs, leurs frères.

 1 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

2 Car il y en avait qui disaient : Nous, nos fils et nos filles, sommes nombreux ; pourtant nous avons levé du grain pour eux, afin que nous puissions manger et vivre.

 2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

3 Et il y en avait d’autres qui disaient : Nous avons hypothéqué nos terres, vignes, et maisons, pour que nous puissions acheter du grain pendant la disette.

 3 Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

4 Il y en avait aussi qui disaient : Nous avons emprunté de l’argent, pour le tribut du roi, et cela sur nos terres et sur nos vignes.

 4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

5 Cependant notre chair est comme la chair de nos frères, nos enfants comme leurs enfants ; et voici, nous réduisons nos fils et nos filles à la servitude, et quelques-unes de nos filles sont déjà assujetties ; et il n’est pas en notre pouvoir de les racheter ; car nos terres et nos vignes sont à d’autres.

 5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

6 ¶ Et je fus fort courroucé quand j’entendis leur cri et ces paroles.

 6 ¶ And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 Et je délibérai en moi-même, et je reprenais les notables et les dirigeants, et je leur dis : Vous prêtez avec intérêt chacun de vous à son frère. Et je convoquai contre eux une grande assemblée ;

 7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

8 Et je leur dis : Nous avons racheté, selon notre possibilité, nos frères, les juifs, qui avaient été vendus aux païens, et vous vendriez vous-mêmes vos frères ? Ou nous seraient-ils vendus ? Alors ils se turent, et ne trouvèrent aucune réponse.

 8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

9 Et j’ai dit : Ce que vous faites n’est pas bien ; ne devriez-vous pas marcher dans la crainte de notre Dieu, à cause de l’outrage des païens, nos ennemis ?

 9 Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

10 Moi aussi, et mes frères, et mes serviteurs, nous pourrions exiger d’eux de l’argent et du grain ; laissons, je vous prie, cet intérêt.

 10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

11 Rendez-leur, je vous prie, aujourd’hui leurs terres, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons, et aussi le centième de l’argent, et du grain, du vin et de l’huile que vous exigez d’eux.

 11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

12 Et Ils répondirent : Nous les rendrons, et nous ne leur demanderons rien ; ainsi nous ferons comme tu dis. Alors j’appelai les prêtres, et je les fis jurer de faire selon cette promesse.

 12 Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

13 Je secouai aussi mon genou, et je dis : Que Dieu secoue ainsi de sa maison et de son labeur, tout homme qui n’accompli pas cette promesse, ainsi soit-il secoué et vidé. Et toute la congrégation dit : Amen, et ils louèrent le SEIGNEUR. Et le peuple fit selon cette promesse.

 13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

14 ¶ De plus, depuis le jour auquel j’avais été assigné pour être leur gouverneur au pays de Judah, depuis la vingtième année jusqu’à la trente-deuxième année du roi Artaxerxes, c’est-à-dire, douze ans, moi et mes frères, nous n’avons pas mangé le pain du gouverneur.

 14 ¶ Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 Mais les précédents gouverneurs, qui avaient été avant moi, avaient surchargé le peuple et avaient pris d’eux du pain et du vin, en plus quarante shekels d’argent, et même leurs serviteurs dominaient sur le peuple ; mais je n’ai pas fait ainsi, à cause de la crainte de Dieu.

 15 But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

16 Oui, j’ai même continué dans le travail de cette muraille ; nous n’avons achetée aucune terre ; et tous mes serviteurs étaient assemblés là au travail.

 16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

17 De plus il y avait à ma table cent cinquante Juifs et dirigeants, en plus de ceux qui venaient vers nous du milieu des païens qui étaient autour de nous.

 17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

18 Or ce qui était apprêté pour moi chaque jour était un bœuf et six moutons de choix, des volailles aussi, et tous les dix jours toutes sortes de vins ; cependant pour tout cela je n’ai pas demandé le pain du gouverneur, parce que la servitude pesait lourdement sur le peuple.

 18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

19 Pense à moi, mon Dieu, en bien, selon tout ce que j’ai fait pour ce peuple.

 19 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
