1 Et il arriva, lorsque Sanballat, Tobiah (Tobija) et Geshem (Guéshem), l’Arabe, et le reste de nos ennemis, apprirent que j’avais bâti la muraille, et qu’il n’y restait aucune brèche, (bien qu’à ce moment-là, je n’avais pas mis les battants aux portes),

 1 Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)

2 Sanballat et Geshem (Guéshem) envoyèrent vers moi, disant : Viens, et rencontrons-nous ensemble, dans un des villages de la plaine d’Ono. Mais ils pensaient à me faire du mal.

 2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

3 Et j’envoyai des messagers vers eux, disant : Je suis en train de faire un grand travail, donc je ne peux pas descendre pourquoi ce travail cesserait-il pendant que je le laisserais pour descendre vers vous ?

 3 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

4 Néanmoins ils continuèrent suivant le même propos quatre fois ; et je leur répondis de la même manière.

 4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

5 Alors Sanballat envoya vers moi son serviteur, une cinquième fois, de la même manière avec une lettre ouverte en sa main,

 5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;

6 Dans laquelle était écrit : On entend dire parmi les païens, et Gashmu le dit, que, toi et les Juifs vous pensez à vous révolter ; c’est pour cela que tu bâtis la muraille, afin que tu sois leur roi, selon ces paroles.

 6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.

7 Et que tu as même assigné des prophètes, pour prêcher à ton sujet à Jérusalem disant : Il y a un roi en Judah et maintenant, on fera entendre au roi selon ces paroles. Viens donc maintenant, et tenons conseil ensemble.

 7 And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

8 Je renvoyai alors vers lui, pour lui dire Il n’existe aucune des choses dont tu parles, mais tu les inventes dans ton propre cœur.

 8 Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

9 Car ils voulaient nous faire peur, disant : Leurs mains s’affaibliront à cause du travail, de sorte qu’il ne se fera pas. Maintenant donc, ô Dieu fortifie mes mains.

 9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

10 Après cela, j’allai dans la maison de Shemaiah, le fils de Delaiah (Delaïa), le fils de Mehetabeel, qui s’était enfermé ; et il dit : Rencontrons-nous dans la maison de Dieu, à l’intérieur du temple, et fermons les portes du temple ; car ils doivent venir pour te tuer ; oui, de nuit ils doivent venir pour te tuer.

 10 Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

11 Et je dis : Un homme tel que moi fuirait-il ? Et qui est-ce qui, étant comme je suis, entrerait dans le temple afin de sauver sa vie ? Je n’y entrerai pas.

 11 And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

12 Et je discernai que Dieu ne l’avait pas envoyé, mais qu’il avait prononcé cette prophétie contre moi, parce que Tobiah et Sanballat l’avaient soudoyé.

 12 And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13 C’est pour cela qu’il était soudoyé, pour que j’aie peur, et fasse ainsi et que je pèche, et afin qu’ils aient matière à me donner mauvais renon dont ils puissent me reprocher.

 13 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14 Mon Dieu, souviens-toi de Tobiah et de Sanballat, selon leurs actions ; ainsi que de Noadiah (Noadia), la prophétesse, et du reste des prophètes qui voulaient me faire peur.

 14 My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

15 ¶ Néanmoins la muraille fut achevée le vingt-cinquième jour du mois d’Elul, en cinquante-deux jours.

 15 ¶ So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.

16 Et il arriva, lorsque tous nos ennemis l’apprirent, et que tous les païens qui étaient autour de nous, virent ces choses, qu'ils furent fort abattus en leurs propres yeux ; car ils discernèrent que ce travail était l’ouvrage de notre Dieu.

 16 And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

17 De plus, en ces jours-là, les notables de Judah envoyaient de nombreuses lettres à Tobiah ; et les lettres de Tobiah leur parvenaient.

 17 ¶ Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

18 Car beaucoup en Judah lui avaient prêté serment, parce qu’il était le gendre de Shechaniah (Shécania), le fils d’Arah, et Jehohanan, son fils, avait épousé la fille de Meshullam, le fils de Berechiah (Bérékia).

 18 For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

19 Ils racontaient aussi ses bonnes actions devant moi, et lui rapportaient mes paroles. Et Tobiah envoyait des lettres pour me faire peur.

 19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
