1 Et le SEIGNEUR parla à Moïse disant:

 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Envoie des hommes pour qu’ils examinent la terre de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d’Israël vous enverrez un homme de chaque tribu de leurs pères, chacun un dirigeant parmi eux.

 2 Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

3 Et Moïse les envoya du désert de Paran, selon le commandement du SEIGNEUR ; tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d’Israël.

 3 And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

4 Et ceux-ci étaient leurs noms : De la tribu de Reuben (Ruben) : Shammuah, le fils de Zacur ;

 4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 De la tribu de Simeon (Siméon) : Shaphat, le fils de Hori ;

 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 De la tribu de Judah (Juda) : Caleb, le fils de Jephunneh ( Jephunné) ;

 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 De la tribu d’Issachar (Issacar) : Igal, le fils de Joseph ;

 7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8 De la tribu d’Ephraim (Éphraïm) : Oshea (Hosée), le fils de Nun ;

 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

9 De la tribu de Benjamin : Palti, le fils de Raphu ;

 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 De la tribu de Zebulun (Zabulon) : Gaddiel, le fils de Sodi ;

 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 De la tribu de Joseph, c’est-à-dire, de la tribu de Manasseh (Manassé) : Gaddi, le fils de Susi ;

 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 De la tribu de Dan, Ammiel : le fils de Gemalli ;

 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 De la tribu d’Asher (Asser) : Sethur, le fils de Michael ;

 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 De la tribu de Naphtali (Nephtali) : Nahbi, le fils de Vophsi ;

 14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 De la tribu de Gad : Geuel, le fils de Machi.

 15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 Ce sont là les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour épier le pays. Et Moïse nomma Oshea (Hosée), le fils de Nun, Jehoshua (Josué).

 16 These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.

17 ¶ Et Moïse les envoya pour épier la terre de Canaan, et il leur dit : Montez par ce chemin, vers le Sud, et vous monterez sur la montagne,

 17 ¶ And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

18 Et voyez la terre, ce qu’elle est, ainsi que le peuple qui y demeure, s’il est fort ou faible, s’il est en petit ou en grand nombre ;

 18 And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;

19 Et ce qu’est la terre où il demeure, si elle est bonne ou mauvaise ; quelles sont les villes dans lesquelles il demeure, si c’est dans des tentes ou dans des villes fortifiées ;

 19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;

20 Et quel est la terre, si elle est grasse ou maigre ; s’il y a des arbres ou non. Et ayez bon courage, et prenez du fruit de la terre. Or c’était le temps des premiers raisins.

 20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

21 ¶ Et ils montèrent et examinèrent la terre, depuis le désert de Zin (Tsin) jusqu’à Rehob, quand on arrive à Hamath.

 21 ¶ So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

22 Et ils montèrent par le Sud, et arrivèrent à Hebron, où étaient Ahiman, Sheshai, et Talmai, les enfants d’Anak. (Or Hebron avait été bâtie sept ans avant Zoan d’Égypte).

 22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 Et ils arrivèrent au torrent d’Eshcol, et coupèrent de là un sarment avec une grappe de raisins, et ils le portèrent à deux avec une perche, et ils apportèrent des grenades et des figues.

 23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 On appela ce lieu : torrent d’Eshcol, à cause de la grappe de raisins que les enfants d’Israël y coupèrent.

 24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

25 Et ils revinrent de la reconnaissance de la terre au bout de quarante jours.

 25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

26 ¶ Et ils allèrent et vinrent vers Moïse et vers Aaron, et vers toute la congrégation des enfants d’Israël, au désert de Paran, à Kadesh (Kadès), et ils leur rendirent compte, ainsi qu’à toute la congrégation, et leur montrèrent le fruit de la terre.

 26 ¶ And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.

27 Et ils lui racontèrent et dirent : Nous sommes allés dans la terre où tu nous as envoyés ; et vraiment elle est ruisselante de lait et de miel, et voici de son fruit.

 27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 Néanmoins le peuple qui demeure dans cette terre est fort, et les villes sont fortifiées et très grandes ; et de plus nous y avons vu les enfants d’Anak.

 28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Les Amalekites demeurent dans lla terre au Sud ; et les Hitiites (Héthiens), et les Jebusites (Jébusiens) et les Amorites demeurent dans les montagnes ; et les Canaanites (Cananéens) demeurent près de la mer et le long du Jourdain.

 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

30 Et Caleb fit taire le peuple devant Moïse, et dit : Montons tout de suite, et possédons-la ; car nous sommes bien capables de les vaincre.

 30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 Mais les hommes qui étaient montés avec lui, dirent : Nous ne sommes pas capables de monter contre ce peuple, car ils sont plus forts que nous.

 31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

32 Et ils soumirent un mauvais rapport sur la terre qu’ils avaient examiné devant les enfants d’Israël disant: La terre que nous avons parcouru pour la reconnaître est une terre qui dévore ses habitants, et tout le peuple que nous y avons vu, sont des hommes de grande stature.

 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

33 Et nous y avons vu les géants, les fils d’Anak, qui sont descendants des géants ; et nous étions à nos yeux comme des sauterelles, et nous l’étions aussi à leurs yeux.

 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
