1 Or les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) et les enfants de Gad avaient une très grande multitude de bétail ; et quand ils virent la terre de Jazer et la terre de Gilead (Galaad), que voici, le lieu était un lieu propre pour le bétail.

 1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

2 Les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) vinrent, et parlèrent à Moïse, et à Eleazar, le prêtre, et aux princes de la congrégation disant:

 2 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

3 Ataroth, et Dibon, et Jazer, et Nimrah, Heshbon (Hesbon), et Elealeh (Elhalé), et Shebam, et Nebo et Beon,

 3 Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

4 Savoir le pays, que le SEIGNEUR a frappé devant la congrégation d’Israël, est une terre propre pour le bétail, et tes serviteurs ont du bétail.

 4 Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:

5 C’est pourquoi ils dirent : Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en possession à tes serviteurs ; et ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain.

 5 Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

6 ¶ Et Moïse dit aux enfants de Gad et aux enfants de Reuben (Ruben) : Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre, et vous, vous resterez ici ?

 6 ¶ And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

7 Et pourquoi découragez-vous le cœur des enfants d’Israël de passer dans la terre que le SEIGNEUR leur a donné ?

 7 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?

8 Ainsi firent vos pères, quand je les envoyai de Kadeshbarnea pour voir le pays.

 8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.

9 Car quand ils montèrent jusqu’à la vallée d’Eshcol, et virent le pays, ils découragèrent le cœur des enfants d’Israël, afin qu’ils n’entrent pas dans la terre que le SEIGNEUR leur avait donné.

 9 For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

10 Et le courroux du SEIGNEUR s’embrasa en ce jour-là, et il jura disant:

 10 And the LORD’S anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,

11 Assurément aucun des hommes qui montèrent d’Égypte, depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, ne verront la terre que j’ai juré à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, parce qu’ils ne m’ont pas pleinement suivi ;

 11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

12 Excepté Caleb, le fils de (Jephunné), le Kenizite (Kénisien), et Joshua (Josué), le fils de Nun, car ils ont pleinement suivi le SEIGNEUR.

 12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.

13 Et le courroux du SEIGNEUR s’embrasa contre Israël ; et il les fit errer dans le désert, quarante ans, jusqu’à ce que toute la génération qui avait fait ce qui est mauvais aux yeux du SEIGNEUR, ait été consumée.

 13 And the LORD’S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

14 Et voici, vous vous êtes levés à la place de vos pères, un surcroît d’hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter encore l’ardeur du courroux du SEIGNEUR contre Israël.

 14 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.

15 Car si vous vous détournez de lui, il les laissera encore dans le désert, et vous détruirez tout ce peuple.

 15 For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

16 ¶ Et ils s’approchèrent de lui, et dirent : Nous bâtirons ici des bergeries pour nos troupeaux, et des villes pour nos petits enfants ;

 16 ¶ And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:

17 Mais nous nous irons préparer pour le combat devant les enfants d’Israël, jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons fait entrer dans leur lieu ; mais nos petits enfants demeureront dans les villes fortifiées, à cause des habitants du pays.

 17 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

18 Nous ne retournerons pas dans nos maisons, jusqu’à ce que les enfants d’Israël aient hérité chacun son héritage ;

 18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.

19 Car nous n’hériterons pas avec eux au-delà du Jourdain, ni plus loin, parce que notre héritage nous est échu de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, vers l’Est.

 19 For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

20 ¶ Et Moïse leur dit : Si vous faites cela, si vous allez étant armés devant le SEIGNEUR pour la guerre,

 20 ¶ And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,

21 Et vous tous irez armés passer le Jourdain devant le SEIGNEUR, jusqu’à ce qu’il ait chassé ses ennemis de devant lui,

 21 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,

22 Et que la terre soit subjuguée devant le SEIGNEUR, et qu’ensuite vous retourniez, alors vous serez innocents devant le SEIGNEUR et devant Israël, et ce pays sera votre possession devant le SEIGNEUR.

 22 And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

23 Mais si vous ne faites pas ainsi, voici, vous aurez péché contre le SEIGNEUR, et soyez sûrs que votre péché vous trouvera.

 23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

24 Bâtissez-vous des villes pour vos petits enfants, et des bergeries pour vos moutons, et faites ce qui est sorti de votre bouche.

 24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

25 Et les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) parlèrent à Moïse disant: Tes serviteurs feront ce que mon seigneur commande.

 25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

26 Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail seront là dans les villes de Gilead (Galaad) ;

 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:

27 Mais tes serviteurs passeront, chaque homme armé pour la guerre, devant le SEIGNEUR, pour se battre, comme mon seigneur l’a dit.

 27 But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.

28 Alors Moïse commanda à leur égard à Eleazar, le prêtre, à Joshua (Josué), le fils de Nun, et aux chefs des pères des tribus des enfants d’Israël.

 28 So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

29 Et Moïse leur dit : Si les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) passent avec vous le Jourdain, chaque homme armé pour la bataille, devant le SEIGNEUR, et que la terre soit subjuguée devant vous, vous leur donnerez la terre de Gilead (Galaad) en possession ;

 29 And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

30 Mais s’ils ne passent pas armés avec vous, ils auront des possessions parmi vous dans la terre de Canaan.

 30 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

31 Et les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) répondirent disant: Comme le SEIGNEUR a dit à tes serviteurs, nous ferons ainsi ;

 31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

32 Nous passerons armés devant le SEIGNEUR dans la terre de Canaan, afin que la possession de notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain puisse être à nous.

 32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.

33 Et Moïse leur donna, c’est-à-dire aux enfants de Gad et aux enfants de Reuben (Ruben), et à la moitié de la tribu de Manaseh (Mannasé), le fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, roi des Amorites, et le royaume d’Og, roi de Bashan, la terre avec ses villes dans leurs confins, savoir les villes du pays tout autour.

 33 And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

34 ¶ Et les enfants de Gad bâtirent Dibon, et Ataroth, et Aroer,

 34 ¶ And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

35 Et Atroth, Shophan, et Jaazer, et Jogbehah,

 35 And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,

36 Et Bethnimrah, et Bethharan, villes fortifiées, et des bergeries pour leurs moutons.

 36 And Bethnimrah, and Bethharan, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.

37 Et les enfants de Reuben (Ruben) bâtirent Heshbon (Hesbon), et Elealeh (Elhalé), et Kirjathaim,

 37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,

38 Et Nebo, et Baalmeon, (dont les noms furent changés), et Shibmah ; et ils donnèrent d’autres noms aux villes qu’ils bâtirent.

 38 And Nebo, and Baalmeon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.

39 Et les enfants de Machir, le fils de Manaseh (Mannasé), allèrent en Gilead (Guilead), et le prirent, et dépossédèrent l’Amorite qui y était.

 39 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.

40 Et Moïse donna Gilead (Guilead) à Machir (Makir), le fils de Manaseh (Mannasé), qui il y demeura.

 40 And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

41 Et Jair, le fils de Manaseh (Mannasé), alla et prit leurs petites villes, et les appela Havothjair.

 41 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havothjair.

42 Et Nobah alla et prit Kenath avec les villages de son ressort, et l’appela Nobah d’après son nom.

 42 And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
