1 Mon fils, si tu te portes caution pour ton ami, si tu as engagé ta main avec un étranger,

 1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

2 Tu es pris au piège par les paroles de ta bouche, tu es pris par les paroles de ta bouche.

 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

3 Fais ceci maintenant, mon fils, et dégage-toi, lorsque tu en es arrivé à être dans la main de ton ami; va, humilie-toi, et tiens parole envers ton ami.

 3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

4 Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni assoupissement à tes paupières.

 4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

5 Dégage-toi, comme un chevreuil de la main du chasseur, et comme un oiseau de la main de l'oiseleur.

 5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 ¶ Va vers la fourmi, toi indolent; considère ses agissements, et sois sage:

 6 ¶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

7 Laquelle n'ayant ni guide, ni surveillant, ni dirigeant,

 7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

8 Pourvoit sa nourriture en été, et amasse ses vivres durant la moisson.

 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

9 Pendant combien de temps dormiras-tu, ô indolent? Quand surgiras -tu de ton sommeil?

 9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

10 Encore un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, un peu de croisement des mains pour dormir:

 10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

11 Ainsi ta pauvreté viendra comme celui qui voyage, et ton manque comme un homme armé.

 11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

12 ¶ Une personne vilaine, un homme immoral, marche avec une bouche obstinée.

 12 ¶ A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

13 Il cligne de ses yeux, il parle avec ses pieds, il enseigne avec ses doigts;

 13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

14 L’obstination est dans son cœur, il imagine la malveillance continuellement; il sème la discorde.

 14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

15 C'est pourquoi sa calamité viendra-t-elle soudainement; soudainement sera-t-il brisé sans remède.

 15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

16 ¶ Ces six choses le SEIGNEUR les hait: oui, sept lui sont en abomination:

 16 ¶ These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 Un regard fier, une langue menteuse, et des mains qui versent le sang innocent,

 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 Un cœur qui invente des projets immoraux, les pieds qui sont prompts à courir vers la malveillance,

 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 Un faux témoin qui dit des mensonges, et celui qui sème la discorde entre frères.

 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

20 ¶ Mon fils, garde le commandement de ton père, et n'abandonne pas la loi de ta mère:

 20 ¶ My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

21 Lie-les continuellement sur ton cœur, et attache-les autour de ton cou.

 21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

22 Lorsque tu marches, cela te conduira; lorsque tu dors, cela te gardera; et lorsque tu te réveilles, cela s'entretiendra avec toi.

 22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

23 Car le commandement est une lampe; et la loi est lumière; et les réprimandes de l’instruction sont le chemin de la vie:

 23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

24 Pour te garder de la femme malveillante, de la flatterie de la langue d'une femme inconnue.

 24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

25 Ne désire pas sa beauté dans ton cœur; et ne te laisse pas prendre non plus par ses paupières;

 25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

26 Car au moyen d’une femme prostituée un homme est réduit à un morceau de pain: et la femme adultère chassera après la vie précieuse.

 26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

27 Un homme peut-il prendre feu dans son sein, sans que ses effets ne soient brûlés?

 27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

28 Quelqu’un peut-il aller sur des charbons ardents, sans que ses pieds ne soient brûlés?

 28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

29 Ainsi en est-il pour celui qui va vers la femme de son voisin; quiconque la touche ne sera pas innocent.

 29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

30 Les hommes ne méprisent pas un voleur s'il vole pour satisfaire son âme lorsqu’il a faim;

 30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

31 Mais s’il est retrouvé, il rendra le septuple, il donnera tous les biens de sa maison.

 31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

32 Mais quiconque commet un adultère avec une femme manque de compréhension: celui qui le fait détruit sa propre âme.

 32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

33 Plaie et déshonneur obtiendra-t-il; et son outrage ne sera pas effacé.

 33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

34 Car la jalousie est la rage d’un homme: par conséquent il n’épargnera pas au jour de la vengeance.

 34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

35 Il n'aura égard à aucune rançon; ni ne se reposera content, bien que tu donnes beaucoup de présents.

 35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
