1 Ne te vante pas du lendemain: car tu ne sais pas ce qu'un jour peut apporter.

 1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

2 Laisse un autre homme te louer, et non ta propre bouche; un étranger, et non tes propres lèvres.

 2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 Une pierre est lourde, et le sable pesant; mais le courroux d'un insensé est plus pesant que tous les deux.

 3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

4 Le courroux est cruel et la colère est outrageante; mais qui est capable de tenir devant l’envie?

 4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

5 Une répréhension ouverte vaut mieux qu'un amour caché.

 5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.

6 Fidèles sont les blessures d’un ami; mais les baisers d’un ennemi sont trompeurs.

 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

7 L'âme rassasiée répugne les rayons de miel; mais pour l'âme affamée toute chose amère est douce.

 7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 Comme un oiseau erre loin de son nid, ainsi est l'homme qui erre loin de son lieu.

 8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

9 Baume et parfum réjouissent le cœur: de même que la douceur de l’ami d’un homme par un conseil cordial.

 9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

10 Ton propre ami, et l'ami de ton père, ne les abandonne pas; n'entre pas non plus dans la maison de ton frère au jour de ta calamité: car mieux vaut un voisin qui est proche qu'un frère éloigné.

 10 Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

11 Mon fils, sois sage et rends mon cœur content, afin que je puisse répondre à celui qui m’outrage.

 11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

12 Un homme prudent voit venir le mal et se cache; mais les simplets passent outre et en sont punis.

 12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

13 Prends le vêtement de celui qui est caution pour un étranger, et prends de lui un gage, à cause de la femme étrangère.

 13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

14 Celui qui bénit son ami à haute voix, se levant tôt le matin, cela lui sera compté comme une malédiction.

 14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

15 Une gouttière continuelle un jour de forte pluie, et une femme querelleuse sont semblables.

 15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

16 Quiconque la cache, cache le vent, et le baume sur sa main droite lequel se fait déceler.

 16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

17 Le fer aiguise le fer, ainsi un homme aiguise le visage de son ami.

 17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18 Quiconque entretient le figuier mangera de son fruit: de même celui qui veille sur son maître sera honoré.

 18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

19 Comme dans l'eau, le visage répond au visage, de même que le cœur de l'homme à l'homme.

 19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

20 L’enfer et la destruction ne sont jamais assouvis; de même les yeux de l'homme ne sont jamais satisfaits.

 20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21 Comme le creuset pour l'argent, et le fourneau pour l'or; ainsi est un homme à la mesure de sa louange.

 21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

22 Quand tu broierais un insensé dans un mortier parmi le grain avec un pilon, cependant son absurdité ne le quitterait toujours pas.

 22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

23 Sois diligent pour connaître l’état de tes troupeaux, et veille bien sur ton bétail.

 23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

24 Car la richesse n’est pas pour toujours: et la couronne dure-t-elle à chaque génération?

 24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

25 Le foin paraît, et l'herbe tendre se montre, et les herbages des montagnes sont ramassés.

 25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

26 Les agneaux sont pour te vêtir, et les chèvres sont le prix d'un champ.

 26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

27 Et tu auras assez de lait de tes chèvres pour ta nourriture, pour la nourriture de ta maisonnée, et pour l’entretien de tes jeunes filles.

 27 And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
