1 Les paroles d'Agur, le fils de Jakeh, à savoir la prophétie: l’homme parla à Ithiel, c’est-à-dire à Ithiel et à Ucal,

 1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

2 Assurément je suis plus stupide qu’aucun autre homme, et n'ai pas la compréhension d'un homme.

 2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.

3 Je n'ai ni appris la sagesse, ni ne possède la connaissance du saint.

 3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

4 Qui est monté au ciel, ou en est descendu? Qui a recueilli le vent dans ses poings? Qui a délimité les eaux dans un vêtement? Qui a établi tous les bouts de la terre? Quel est son nom, et quel est le nom de son fils, si tu peux le dire?

 4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

5 Chaque parole de Dieu est pure: il est un écu pour ceux qui mettent leur confiance en lui.

 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

6 N'ajoute pas à ses paroles, de peur qu'il ne te réprouve, et que tu ne sois trouvé menteur.

 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

7 Deux choses, ai-je requis de toi; ne me les refuse pas, avant que je meure:

 7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:

8 Retire loin de moi vanité et mensonges: donne-moi ni pauvreté ni richesses; nourris-moi de nourriture appropriée pour moi.

 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

9 De peur que je ne sois assouvi, et te renie et dise, Qui est le SEIGNEUR? Ou de peur que je ne sois pauvre, et vole, et prenne le nom de mon Dieu en vain.

 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

10 N'accuse pas un serviteur auprès de son maître, de peur qu'il ne te maudisse, et que tu sois trouvé coupable.

 10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

11 Il y a une génération qui maudit son père et qui ne bénit pas sa mère.

 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

12 Il y a une génération qui est pure à ses propres yeux et qui cependant n'est pas lavée de sa saleté.

 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

13 Il y a une génération, ô combien ses yeux sont altiers! Et ses paupières sont élevées.

 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

14 Il y a une génération dont les dents sont comme des épées et leurs molaires comme des couteaux, pour dévorer les pauvres de la terre, et les nécessiteux parmi les hommes.

 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

15 La sangsue a deux filles, criant, Donne, donne. Il y a trois choses qui ne sont jamais satisfaites, oui, quatre choses qui ne disent pas, C'est assez:

 15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:

16 La tombe; et l’utérus stérile; la terre qui n'est pas remplie d'eau; et le feu qui ne dit pas, C'est assez.

 16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.

17 L'œil qui se moque de son père et méprise d’obéir à sa mère, les corbeaux de la vallée l’arracheront et les aiglons le mangeront.

 17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

18 Il y a trois choses qui sont trop merveilleuses pour moi, oui, quatre que je ne connais pas.

 18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:

19 Le chemin de l'aigle dans l’air, le chemin du serpent sur un roc, le chemin d'un navire au milieu de la mer; et le chemin de l'homme avec une jeune fille.

 19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

20 Tel est le chemin d’une femme adultère; elle mange, et essuie sa bouche, et dit, Je n'ai fait aucune immoralité.

 20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.

21 À cause de trois choses la terre est perturbée et à cause de quatre elle ne peut pas les supporter:

 21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:

22 À cause d’un serviteur lorsqu’il règne; et d’un insensé lorsqu’il est rempli de nourriture;

 22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;

23 À cause d’une femme odieuse lorsqu’elle est mariée; et d’une servante qui hérite de sa maîtresse.

 23 For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

24 Il y a quatre choses qui sont petites sur la terre, mais elles sont extrêmement sages:

 24 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

25 Les fourmis sont un peuple sans robustesse, cependant elles préparent leur nourriture en été;

 25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;

26 Les damans ne sont qu’un peuple faible, cependant ils font leurs maisons dans les rocs;

 26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;

27 Les locustes n'ont pas de roi, cependant elles sortent toutes par bandes;

 27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

28 L’araignée saisit avec ses mains, et est dans les palais des rois.

 28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.

29 Il y a trois choses qui ont une belle démarche, oui, quatre qui ont une belle allure:

 29 There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:

30 Un lion, lequel est le plus fort parmi les bêtes, et ne se détourne devant rien;

 30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;

31 Un lévrier; un bouc aussi; et un roi, contre qui il n’y a aucun soulèvement.

 31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.

32 Si tu as agi bêtement en t'élevant, ou si tu as pensé à mal faire, mets ta main sur ta bouche.

 32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.

33 Assurément le barattage du lait produit le beurre, et la pression du nez produit le sang: ainsi la pression du courroux produit la querelle.

 33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
