1 Que dirons-nous alors qu’Abraham notre père, se rapportant à la chair, a trouvé?

 1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2 Car si Abraham avait été justifié par les œuvres, il a de quoi se glorifier; mais pas devant Dieu.

 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3 Car que dit l’écriture? Abraham crut Dieu, et cela lui fut compté pour droiture.

 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

4 Or pour celui qui œuvre, la récompense n’est pas comptée en terme dles e grâce, mais de dette.

 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 Mais pour celui qui n’œuvre pas, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie les impies, sa foi lui est comptée pour droiture.

 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

6 Alors même que David aussi décrit la félicité de l’homme, en qui Dieu impute la droiture sans les œuvres,

 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 Disant, Bénis sont ceux dont les iniquités sont pardonnées, et dont les péchés sont couverts.

 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8 Béni est l’homme à qui le Seigneur n’imputera pas le péché.

 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

9 Cette félicité, vient-elle alors seulement sur la circoncision, ou sur l’incirconcision aussi? Car nous disons que la foi fut comptée à Abraham pour droiture.

 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

10 Comment a-t-elle alors été comptée? Lorsqu’il était dans la circoncision, ou dans l’incirconcision? Non dans la circoncision, mais dans l’incirconcision.

 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 Et il reçut le signe de la circoncision, un sceau de la droiture de la foi qu’il eut étant encore incirconcis: afin qu’il puisse être le père de tous ceux qui croient, bien qu’ils ne soient pas circoncis; afin que la droiture puisse leur être imputée aussi:

 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

12 Et qu’il soit le père de la circoncision pour ceux qui ne sont pas seulement de la circoncision, mais qui aussi marchent dans les traces de cette foi de notre père Abraham, laquelle il avait étant encore incirconcis.

 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

13 Car la promesse, qu’il devait être l’héritier du monde, n’était pas pour Abraham, ou pour sa semence, par le moyen de la loi, mais par le moyen de la droiture de la foi.

 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 Car si ceux qui sont de la loi étaient héritiers, la foi serait rendue nulle, et la promesse serait d’aucun effet:

 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15 Parce que la loi produit le courroux: car là où il n’y a aucune loi, il n’y a aucune transgression.

 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16 Par conséquent c’est par la foi, pour que cela puisse être par la grâce; pour qu’à la fin la promesse puisse être assurée à toute la semence; non seulement pour celle qui est de la loi, mais aussi pour celle qui est de la foi d’Abraham; qui est le père de nous tous,

 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17 (Comme il est écrit, J’ai fait de toi un père de beaucoup de nations), devant celui auquel il crut, c’est-à-dire Dieu, qui vivifie le mort, et appelle ces choses qui n’existent pas comme si elles étaient.

 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

18 Qui contre toute espérance crut en l’espérance, qu’il puisse devenir le père de beaucoup de nations, selon ce qui avait été dit, Ainsi sera ta semence.

 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

19 Et n’étant pas faible dans la foi, il ne considéra pas son propre corps déjà mort, quand il avait environ cent ans, ni non plus le dépérissement de l’utérus de Sara:

 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:

20 Il ne vacilla pas quant à la promesse de Dieu par incrédulité; mais fut fort en foi, donnant gloire à Dieu;

 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 Et étant pleinement persuadé que ce qu’il avait promis, il était aussi capable de l’exécuter.

 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

22 Et par conséquent cela lui fut imputé pour droiture.

 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

23 Or ce ne fut pas écrit à son égard seulement, que cela lui fut imputé;

 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

24 Mais pour nous aussi, à qui cela sera imputé, si nous croyons en celui qui ressuscita Jésus notre Seigneur d’entre les morts;

 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Qui fut livré pour nos offenses, et fut ressuscité pour notre justification.

 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
