1 Ne savez-vous pas, frères (car je parle à ceux qui connaissent la loi), comment la loi a emprise sur un homme aussi longtemps qu’il vit?

 1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

2 Car la femme qui a un mari est liée par la loi à son mari aussi longtemps qu’il vit; mais si le mari vient à mourir, elle est dégagée de la loi de son mari.

 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

3 Ainsi donc si, pendant que son mari vit, elle est marié à un autre homme, elle sera appelée adultère: mais si son mari est mort, elle est libre de cette loi; de sorte qu’elle n’est pas adultère, bien qu’elle soit mariée à un autre homme.

 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

4 C’est pourquoi, mes frères, vous aussi êtes devenus morts à la loi par le corps de Christ, afin que vous soyez mariés à un autre, savoir à celui qui est ressuscité d’entre les morts, afin que nous produisions du fruit à Dieu.

 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

5 Car lorsque nous étions dans la chair, les impulsions des péchés, lesquels étaient par la loi, agissaient dans nos membres pour produire du fruit jusqu’à la mort.

 5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

6 Mais maintenant nous sommes délivrés de la loi, étant morts ce en quoi nous étions retenus; afin que nous servions en nouveauté d’esprit, et non en l’ancienneté de la lettre.

 6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

7 Que dirons-nous alors? La loi est-elle péché? Dieu nous en garde: Non, je n’aurais pas connu le péché, sinon par la loi: car je n’aurais pas connu la convoitise, sauf que la loi a dit,Tu ne convoiteras pas.

 7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

8 Mais le péché, prenant occasion par le commandement, effectua en moi toute sorte de concupiscences. Car sans la loi le péché était mort.

 8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

9 Car j’étais vivant sans la loi autrefois: mais lorsque le commandement vint, le péché reprit vie, et je mourus.

 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 Et le commandement, qui était ordonné pour la vie, je l’ai trouvé être à la mort.

 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

11 Car le péché, prenant occasion par le commandement me trompa, et par lui me tua.

 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

12 C’est pourquoi la loi est sainte, et le commandement saint, et juste, et bon.

 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Ce qui est bon a-t-il alors été rendu mortel en moi? Dieu nous en garde: Mais le péché, afin qu’il puisse paraître péché, produisant la mort en moi par ce qui est bon; afin que le péché par le commandement puisse devenir extrêmement corrompu.

 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 Car nous savons que la loi est spirituelle: mais je suis charnel, vendu sous le péché.

 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 Car ce que je fais je ne le permets pas: car ce que je voudrais, cela je ne le fais pas; mais ce que je hais, cela je le fais.

 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 Si alors je fais ce que je ne voudrais pas, je consens à la loi qu’elle est bonne.

 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Maintenant donc ce n’est plus moi qui le fais, mais le péché qui demeure en moi.

 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 Car je sais qu’en moi (c’est-à-dire, dans ma chair), ne demeure aucune bonne chose: car le vouloir est présent en moi; mais comment exécuter ce qui est bien je ne le trouve pas.

 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 Car le bien que je voudrais faire je ne le fais pas: mais le mal que je ne voudrais pas, cela je le fais.

 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Or si je fais ce que je ne voudrais pas, ce n’est plus moi qui le fais, mais le péché qui demeure en moi.

 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 Je trouve alors une loi, qui lorsque je voudrais faire le bien, le mal est présent avec moi.

 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 Car je me délecte dans la loi de Dieu suivant l’homme intérieur:

 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 Mais je vois une autre loi dans mes membres, guerroyant contre la loi de mon cerveau, et me rendant captif à la loi du péché qui est dans mes membres.

 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 Ô misérable homme que je suis! qui me délivrera du corps de cette mort?

 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 Je remercie Dieu par l'intermédiaire de Jésus Christ notre Seigneur. Ainsi donc avec le cerveau moi-même je sers la loi de Dieu, mais, avec la chair, la loi du péché.

 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
